DuncanRG Posted 2 July, 2013 Share Posted 2 July, 2013 I'm not sure paying top money works for clubs like Saints. You just end up with a player who has been sold by his club because we offered most, but who feels he should be playing Champions league somewhere. Our best signings have been in the lower leagues when we were the big fish there, or players with a point to prove. I'd be happier signing up the Championship players of the season than an import deal driven by $$$. The players have to be happy before they sign, and if they want to move onto a Champions League club within a couple of years then they will have to perform to that standard, which suits us just fine. It not as simple as that. One example, there are many permutations. Arsenal rate a player in La Liga and want to sign him, their maximum offer is £10m and £80,000pw . Saints offer £12m and £50,000pw, not because we are richer than them, but because for us its a marquee signing, for Arsenal, not. Player wants to go to Arsenal but selling club refuses, so players option is to stay on the contract he signed in Spain for £20,000pw or come to Saints. He signs but thinks he should be somewhere else.
alpine_saint Posted 2 July, 2013 Share Posted 2 July, 2013 Lovren was slightly after forren, i think. Thanks for proving yet again that if you dare to take a dissenting viewpoint, the responses are either abuse or utterly moronic.

Players who want to play in Europe have to perform their way there, be that with the team they're at or by attracting a bid from a bigger club. KelvinsRightGlove Posted 2 July, 2013 Share Posted 2 July, 2013 Our transfer activity is a complete shambles. Yes, we've picked up the likes of SRL, but that was now several years ago. Our more recent activity - Mayuka, Ramirez, Forren - is looking less than impressive. As you keep saying. My counter argument would be that since the takeover, we have finished every transfer window stronger than we started it. This is also couple with their being an improvement in performances, and league position every season since the takeover. So in my opinion, despite the repetitive nature of your moaning about transfers we actually do quite well. Of our strongest XI last season, how many of those players were at Saints prior to the takeover? I would think it's fair to say 2 (Morgan + Lallana), so the other 8 starters (hard to include Shaw in there really) have been transfer signings. So tell me, was a 14th place finish in the premiership in our first season back not good enough for you?
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 4 July, 2013 Share Posted 4 July, 2013 I was firmly in the camp that thought Forren was signed for this season etc. however in his Saints Player interview today Pochettino was very non-committal on Forren. Clearly he has a future of some sort as he is training with the first team (you only have to see the others out in the cold who aren't) however when asked by Adam Blackmore if there was space in the Saints team for Forren Pochettino said something along the lines of 'we have to see how he trains over the next few days'. It might be that he just sees him as backup or I may just be reading too much into it, but it didn't seem like a very positive answer for a player. Maybe I am just too used to the 'has to train well and fight for his place' stock answer. I definitely don't think we need five senior centre-halves, regardless.
