I sense a bit trying to get a fingernail under the edge of a bit Alpines wallpaper here. His wife has gone down there after dropping the tin lids off to find out what's what and in good faith no axe to grind he has passed on the need to know details in good faith for those looking to make the trip. Just add a bit of knowledge to those going to Palafrugell the last friendly I saw there was Palafrugell v Espanyol in July 2009 (so MP was manager) the price for general entry was €15 back then, but then they were playing against a local La Liga side so there was a licence to up the prices. I will get the definitive answer in the next week. There is a very limited capacity grandstand but plenty of standing all round the pitch with the only bit of banking at one end i will endeavour to get Palamos details if I go in that direction. John Boy Saint Posted 27 June, 2013 Share Posted 27 June, 2013 how would I go about getting to both of those games from Barcelona? If you are flying in on Ryanair then you will arrive in Girona Airport (best check this out before booking accom) which is about an hour north of Barcelona by road, and about an hour from Palafrugell thanks to the first 10 miles being on single carriageway. If you arrive in Barcelona El Prat and hire a car you are looking at about 1 hour 45 drive with good traffic, Palafrugell and Palamos are about 10-15 minutes apart and driving you will go past the Latter. Otherwise from Barcelona you can get the train to Girona then the Bus to Palafrugell/Palamos, the bus company is called Sarfa and they serve most of northern Catalunya with a hub in Palafrugell. That should give you a few options to start with.

alpine_saint Posted 27 June, 2013 Author Share Posted 27 June, 2013 Its a recommendation from the stadium, FFS. You can do what you bloody well want at the end of the day. I dont understand the issue. Over here the local beer is good, cheap, and is served in the stand; you can take your glass to your seat. I think it a good idea to have your last beer in the stand so as to ensure a good seat.

I assume some enjoy the idea of exploring new places (if only to get p*ssed) as well as supporting the team. On the other hand, I dont get certain elements of the Barmy Army that follow the cricketers from the UK either. In my case, the reasoning is self explanatory, I think. I used to come back to the UK in August in time for the last pre-season friendly or first home match, every year. As my family has expanded, that became every 2 years. Now we are 6, with 2 very young kids, it would have entailed some of us driving, some of us flying, and renting somewhere because no family can put us up anymore. I estimated stumping up 3000 to 3500 euro just to step foot in England. Seeing as this meant not seeing Saints for ages longer, I am absolutely over-the-bloody-moon about this pre-season schedule, and am happy to grab what may be my last opportunity to see Saints for a very long time. Wes Tender Posted 27 June, 2013 Share Posted 27 June, 2013 I'm just saying you really don't need to turn up at the ground an hour early, it's not realistic. How do you know? Do you have the sort of local knowledge that Alpine does? Do you know what the local traffic is like when there is an event at that stadium? Alpine has indicated that there is a capacity for seating of 2000 and that Schalke are expecting 800 of their own fans to attend. Do you have any idea of how many locals, Saints fans, or neutrals holidaying in the region are likely to attend? There are usually large numbers of Germans, Dutch and Italians holidaying there and these are people who like their football and would be attracted to the prospect of a match locally featuring an English Premiership team against a top Bundeliga club. If you're attending, I really hope that you don't leave enough time to get there and that when you do finally arrive, you either find that you can't get in, or that you can't get a seat with a half decent view. Your past experiences of other matches against other teams in other places count for little without local knowledge.

I'm pleased to hear that your experience of what is adequate when attending matches in England enables you to take such a confident stance when attending matches abroad, especially when there are circumstantial factors like those I have mentioned which make the situation totally different to anything normal in England too. But I suspect that anybody wishing to go who has any sense, will pay heed to the advice given by those with local knowledge, something that I assume that you do not possess. Alpine actually lives there. I had a grandmother living there and have holidayed there numerous times and was there two years ago, so at least there is some basis for my knowledge that the area has large contingents of Germans, Dutch and Italians there. But still, you may be lucky that few of them wish to watch the match and that you can turn up five minutes before the kick off and sit in acres of space in a half empty stand. Wes Tender Posted 27 June, 2013 Share Posted 27 June, 2013 The ticket office suggesting turning up an hour ahead for one of two reasons that I can think of:- a) People arriving early will generate more revenue in sales of food and refreshments b) The advice is meant to be helpful to those attending, because it takes into account said local traffic conditions and the amount of time they anticipate taking to process the projected number of attendees. I suggest that people pay more attention to those with experience of attending other pre-season matches in other countries, in different sized stadia, against other teams, as they are bound to have a really good idea about it all. If they planned to get there 10 minutes before the kick off, it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that either they then get stuck in traffic and arrive 10 minutes late, or that it takes more than 10 minutes to get in through a queue of other like-minded tardiness freaks. I doubt we will have hordes of thousands marching across europe. a couple of hundred will be maximum from us I suspect 200 Saints fans + 800 Schalke fans = half the seating gone. But naturally all the German, Dutch, Italian or British tourists holidaying there won't be remotely interested, will they? If I were holidaying there this year, I'd sure as hell go to a match featuring any team from Europe's top leagues v Schalke, but I must be a bit weird that way. Schalke have deadly rivals in Borussia Dortmund. No chance of any of their fans turning up, as we wouldn't go to see a Skate pre-season match if we were in the vicinity, would we, not even to go along hoping they got hammered? Schalke is among the top 15 sized clubs in World football, so not really much of a draw at all. The Italian and Slovenian borders are both just 45 minutes away, but why would any football fans bother to travel from there to see any team other than one from their own country? No, you're right, there will only be 1000 fans there max.

The fact the game is being played in a poxy athletics stadium which is pay on the day suggests the locals and every tourist in the region on that day isn't going to be whipped into a frenzy by this fixture. Didn't Alpine mention the other day that the stadium didn't originally even know what his dorris was talking about when she enquired about the tickets? Then again, the stadium management could've been out setting up the rings of fences and security checks to cope with such demand? Maybe they were caught in the 4hr tailbacks regularly generated in this sleepy town with a population of 55k? Maybe Alpine should pitch a tent outside the turnstile so he can beat off competition from the 800 Schalke fans and 10,000 holidaymakers all desperate to catch a glimpse of De Ridder and Jos.
