aintforever Posted 26 June, 2013 Share Posted 26 June, 2013 Are any fanzines still around? I guess this internet thing has killed them off. "hope you die soon" was a classic. The mongs on here would wet themselves if a similar thing was produced today.
Bearsy Posted 26 June, 2013 Share Posted 26 June, 2013 here is what you could of won! It seems to be Frances Benali 12 bookings commemorative issue. Dunno why naked Freddie Mercury is on cover, but maybe that is what prompted Jeff to save copy yo!
100%Red&White Posted 26 June, 2013 Share Posted 26 June, 2013 Keep them for November 5th Jeff. Tut, tut. Still got a stack of them up in the roof, brilliant original fanzine in its day. Got a bit entrenched in politics towards the end with PM and RC but always a pleasure walking to the Dell knowing a new edition was out. Regular contributor Hugh Jardon posts on here occassionally too. Note to self, must dig out and have a read
Tokyo-Saint Posted 26 June, 2013 Share Posted 26 June, 2013 I used to buy that before Bill Gates invented the internet and saintsforever came along. How much do you want Jeff? Edit: Do you have the one about wanting Branfoot to die?
Bearsy Posted 26 June, 2013 Share Posted 26 June, 2013 here is red stripe for comparisons. They is attempting to satirise le tissier exclusions from england squad by inferring venables prefers to select washing machine. I don't think it quote works tho, they don't either cos they feel it necessary to put "Satirical Spurs Connection" in brackets at end, making it clear for the meanest intelligence. The reference to Clean Sheets tho is v.good!
Bearsy Posted 26 June, 2013 Share Posted 26 June, 2013 here is inside the ugly inside, they have actual cartoons they have done bout saints. This one is bit hard to make out cos Jeff camera is smeared in bacon grease apparently but i've fixed it best i can. Is about hearing that Newcastle have signed Saint player to replace Andy Cole and being bummed cos you assume is le tissier and then being like wtf! cos is Jason Dodds hahaha! This makes me feels. Why is you lot so lazy? Why is no-one on here ever drawing me cartoons bout saints players signing for newcastle?

JRM Posted 26 June, 2013 Share Posted 26 June, 2013 fanzines were quality back in those days , I'd buy the ugly inside and on the march , some really funny contributors and would also act as a focal point for fans grievances at the club / football in general, I remember my history teacher at school did the Arsenal fanzine cartoons , quite laddIsh publications with football fan pub humour / banter , modern attempts far to dull in comparison. John Boy Saint Posted 26 June, 2013 Share Posted 26 June, 2013 I think one of the funniest things in one of them was a picture feature titled "Footballers who you wonder how they got laid" Number 1 : photo of Harry Redknapp.

That they looked like they'd been thrown together in someone's garage, were a little bit messy and certainly not politically correct most of the time just added to the appeal. The original fanzines and particularly the Ugly Inside is a significant bit of terrace history for many of us older fans.
ericb Posted 26 June, 2013 Share Posted 26 June, 2013 On the march and the ugly were great early on. Proper terrace humour that you'd always buy on the way to the game. Shame the ugly went down the politics route really but I guess that was just responding to the way the club was at the time.
The Cat Posted 26 June, 2013 Share Posted 26 June, 2013 I've got a few in the loft and that issue of Red Stripe. The Ugly was a decent fanzine, the fans were lucky to have it. There's one on the go now, bloke sells it by the footbridge opposite where King Alfred's was but I haven't bought it. He's obviously not to bothered about advertising because I've never seen him register here to mention it.

The Ugly Inside was one of the best fanzines in the uk in its day. Late 80's early 90's it was fantastic!
ringwood Posted 26 June, 2013 Share Posted 26 June, 2013 Used to buy the Ugly and the next thing was Pirate Paul's stall outside on the garage forecourt selling T shirts, I remember the man u wins being celebrated with a t shirt

I used to like buying the opposition's now and again and there were some really good ones out there, now I would be biased but I'd say the UI was right up there. Preferred the old A4 version to the later and smaller A5 one, it all seemed a bit too tidy!
Pat from Poole Posted 26 June, 2013 Share Posted 26 June, 2013 Yup. The Ugly Inside was superb. I also really liked On The March, though I suppose the notoriety it got for the Branfoot cover probably didn't help it.

Don't worry mods, this isn't breaking any rules, it is public knowledge and the judges decision was published in the echo.

The9 Posted 26 June, 2013 Share Posted 26 June, 2013 I doubt anyone will be surprised to discover I have an absolute shedload of this kind of thing in the garage... not just for Saints but for various clubs, dating back to about 1988. Also every WSC printed since Lou Macari's Swindon got booted out of Division One is in there (or the house) somewhere...
georgeweahscousin Posted 27 June, 2013 Share Posted 27 June, 2013 Who is the best left back in the world? was my favourite Red Strip feature. Benali, Maldini, Le Saux and Roberto Carlos were rated on important subjects like moustaches and curries!
