Compromise:

One paced refreshing work horse, before the era of idle prima donnas ( and foreign mercenaries) who was lucky to play in the PL , BUT TOOK HIS CHANCE WELL.

whatever else is said, he scored some vital goals when we needed them.

Those goals towards the end of the season when he signed helped keep us up but was pretty bad after that. Deffo a lower league clogger.

We flogged him to WBA for 750k and he scored 6 in 63 for them. Pretty poor. Still - he got a sole ROI cap during his time with us.

Prime example of a player who nowadays would never in a million years get a Prem move. Kind of a shame, but shows how the lower sides are better now.

He was an important part of staying up. Loved the goal against West Ham(?)) when he headed the ball and post. But, ultimately, he was a bit rubbish.

In fact, that game in general was class. If I remember correctly Berkovic scored a cracker and Doddsy did a cynical professional foul on Hartson and took a red card for the time. Of course, what is quite likely is that my brain has merged together a bunch of incidents from different matches and none of that happened concurrently.

What was the match where Scott Hiley did the best ever goal line clearance? He was running backwards towards his own goal and headed a ball off the line. In front of the Milton, I think. Might have been the same match. Dunno.

Not sure about Hiley, but the rest was all the same game...and Magilton missed a penalty as well. Doddsy's red card was just before half time, and Hartson and Kitson were pretty deadly at that stage, seem to recall it being a very nervy second half

I was in the second row of the Milton for the West Ham game when he clattered the post. I seem to remember that the ball hit both posts before going in. He definitely hit the post in front of us. One of the bravest goals I have seen. He was on all fours after the goal clearly well out of it.

Was very young when he played for us but remember he scored some very important goals, know very little about him though Plymouth seems to stick in my mind?

We signed him from Plymouth.

I think he was a Plymouth lad, he certainly had a good west country accent when interviewed after his two goals away at Forest,

I recall Souness was the manager who signed him. Story later emerged that Souness had tried signing Kevin Davies from Chesterfield, or had gone to watch KD, and noticed Evans. Chesterfield rejected the KD bid, telling Souness to come back at the end of the season, so he signed Evans instead.

Davies of course arrived after the season finished. Souness p!ssed off a couple of weeks later.

I actually helped get him his international cap.

3 of us (can't remember who else it was now) from Saintslist interviewed him, and it was in that interview that he revealed his Irish Grandparent, which led to the call-up...

I was the guy who did the rest. I was thirteen at the time - got to meet Mick McCarthy, was interviewed by Sky News and on the most popular show on Irish radio. Still get asked about it now and again....
