DNA data to be destroyed

I would like to address some of your points:

1) I would hate for you to confuse a left wing ideals with liberal ideals. I fear that in your first paragraphs you have confused the two.

2) What we need to do is actually catch people who are carrying knives, because that is what will deter people from doing it. Labour and the Tories are caught in a battle of posturing over how many years people should get locked up for, each promising more than the other. The reality is that not many people are getting caught, and even less are being penalised to the full extent of the law.

fair point...the police do like to try and catch people who carry knives....e.g london, the biggest problem with knives is in the black community..that is not being racist, that is a fact...when the polic stop and search in troubled areas they are branded racists by liberals and lefties..and people say their rights are being taken away..

stop and search is one of the methods the police used..maybe lefties and liberals should let them do it from time to time..

Going back to the main point of the thread:

The issue with the retention of DNA is that the Govt. has apparently chosen one of the least reliable tests to use in cases involving DNA evidence. There is the problem of 'false positives' and, as I said before, the fact that your DNA could appear at a crime scene completely innocently, or more disturbingly, be planted there.

And when this database is sold to Life insurance companies and they refuse to insure you because of an inherited genetic issue, that's fine. Or the Govt use it to profile you and tax you accordingly...

They should take fingerprints and DNA at birth.

I would be happy for mine to be taken ( as long as it was held reponsibally - a big ask I know with this Govt's recent record !)

Countless crimes have been resolved using these techniques but imagine how many more would be solved if everyone was on the database.

And the very criminals you'd like to see caught are, fundamentally, the very people who would break the law to avoid giving the samples in the first place.

And yet we already out too many people in prison

Indeed we are. And where in my post did I mention my opinion on what the sentence should be for carrying a knife? Or, indeed, mention every single other sentencing guideline to say which crimes should have jail sentences, and which shouldn't? Just because I said people aren't being arrested and being punished doesn't imply I believe every punishment is a long jail term.

You should stop putting words in other people's mouths, it makes you look the fool.

Unlike your well thought out, rational arguments :p

Well, despite protests on here, I for one welcome this ruling.

If you want to go and give your DNA to the police, go ahead. But if I've done nothing wrong, I don't want my records kept just in case I do.

To think a DNA database of the population is going to serve as a useful deterrent to criminals is naive beyond belief. At the end of the day, the law states we are innocent until proven guilty. We don't need a DNA database to help protect that right.
