Should our captain be speaking of "winnable games"?

Not too much confirmed on the old transfer front since the signing of Lovren, so it's a fairly slow news week for Southampton.

Came across this article on the BBC website.

Adam Lallana reckons "It's different to last year's fixtures. There are some winnable games there".

The concept of winnable games is a little jarring for happy clapper me. They should all be winnable games, shouldn't they? Ok, I accept that we won't win all of them, but it is a little concerning that the team captain is describing our fixtures in this way. Do the lads look at the fixtures and say "nah, we've got no chance - that's not winnable - let's not bother"? And if so, why do they always decide to get tonked by West Brom? :)

So, winnable games. Slip of the tongue, realistic assessment of our situation or indicative of a lack of confidence?

For goodness sake, calm down. I hope we are not going to have this kind "questioning" every time some one says something. I thought there was itching wrong in what he said. Just echoed everyone's else's thoughts. I looked at the fixtures and thought exactly the same.

Curious. A comment that manages to p*ss off a happy clapper and a "doom-monger" like me.

I hate the cautious unambitious way in which footballers seem to start talking when they play for SFC. There is a middle ground between this and "We're off to the Champions League" comments from MP.

Anyway, it is sheer insanity if Lallana is still captain next season.

You could look at it on the flip side that he is basically putting pressure on the team to get off to a good start and there are no excuses this year.

What he says echoes what all of us have said, doesn't suddenly mean they aren't going to try to win games. They know after the results against City, Chelsea and Liverpool that they can match the big teams. In fact the article is right to highlight west brom a team that quite easily beat us twice last year. They need to be winning against the likes of West Brom to push up the table and I think they recognise that.

Pure and simple, like most on here when the fixtures came out last season it was WTF. Those first four fixtures were as hard as you could have picked for a team beginning their first season back in the prem. So compared to last years fixtures yes there's some winnable games. No big deal really is it.

It is slightly curious especially when you consider that some arguably 'unwinable' games became the backbone of our survival last season!

It could be something indicating the intricate and preconceived heiracy of clubs in the english game and the psychology of those within the game towards it.

Or Adam just spoke without giving too much of a crap because, yes, our start last year was extremely harsh, and we are running the risk of reading far too much into things.

I think it's just one of those ****ty misused clichés that have infested our society. He's basically saying that there are some games the team should expect to be able to win as opposed to last season's first five games where any point was a bonus.

Mind you, I'm pretty sure there are managers who go to games hoping for a draw as a bonus with more of an eye on the next "winnable" fixture. Lets face it, if things were tighter last season would we have rather our team busted a gut chasing points at Manc United if the next game was at home to Wigan, or would we rather the team concentrated on getting the points from our relegation rivals?

I listened to talksport yesterday and West Ham asst coach (I think) said that we have bought Carroll and hope to get one or two more in and we are looking to try get 46 points and aim for the same again in 10th place.

What a sad ambition looking for 10th place?

I hope nobody from our club does not say we hope to survive again this season otherwise he will be shot by Cortese.

Btw I'm beginning to hate West Ham.

Why? Good history, solid fanbase despite falling behind other London clubs in terms of the past few decades of success, never looked in danger of going down last season despite not being quite as good as us the year before, making some good signings that fit their brand of football. Now don't get me wrong, I don't like their brand of football, but it all stacks up well for them.

Just signed a lad from Stockport County can you imagine what that would do on here for signs of ambition :-)
