Victor Wanyama - Officially Signed

Anyone know why he chose number 67? MLG?

It is to represent the year of the Lisbon Lions and Celtic's 1967 European Cup win.

"After reading the club's history, I have chosen 67 as my squad number to show appreciation to the 1967 squad."

So maybe he'll want to swap the numbers around to 76 with Saints! :D

"The Chairman looks to have won his battle with the agents"

That's the most important aspect of this drawn out signing to me. Hopefully it paves the way for other chairmen to follow suit.

We don't really know what has happened in that regard at all?

Pretty safe to assume the agent has backed down after no other clubs came in for him.

By not moving the agent get's feck all. So something will always be better then nothing.

Looking at our agent fees in the past (lowest in the league) it would indicate a trend of not playing ball with agents. So again think it is pretty safe to assume the agent backed down here.

Jeez! This means the Daily Mail were actually on the ball with this one then? Looking forward to seeing this completed tomorrow' date=' hopefully, and then moving on to the next target... I wonder who that will be?[/quote']

Throw enough sh*t on the wall...

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

As they have been with a number of things on us in the last couple of years.

Isn't Banega meant to be in talks? Either way, keep checking the daily Fail (PMSL) for updates and I'm sure all will be revealed.

Not really relevant with 2 months of the transfer window and loads of movement still to come, the agents wouldn't completely throw their hand in now, no reason for them to. Most likely some movement on both sides.

Not bad! For a "defensive midfielder" he seems to spend quite a lot of time in the opposition's half (going by that video)

He's a Yaya Toure type, surges up the pitch with amazing strength. I think that's one of the only qualities we could really add to our central midfield, so I'm glad he's signing.

You do know that MLG is the AI that controls google?

You do know when he was trolling the celtic forum with his insanities they pulled him up on the fact he didn't know why he wore the 67 shirt and that's why he knows?

Ask him any question on the jonas brothers tours too.

Like I said we have a history of being strict on agent fees. Is there any evidence to show we back down from peoples demands I.e transfer wise? I don't think that has ever happened. Far more likely the agent backed down. Maybe Lennon's criticism had an effect?

It doesn't match the Championship, look at the size of the 11 biggest clubs in the Championship, all of them would be the 2nd biggest in the current SPL. Even beyond the top 11 in the Championship there would be other Championship sides that would also match up, plus Wolves, Bristol City, Bradford, Sheff Utd in League One and even, dare I say it... Pompey in League 2.

You're officially mental for including them at any point in the past 3 years.

Maybe he will, but unless we can find 75 legitimate squad players to give numbers to he won't be able to have it.

We have no idea if we've ever "backed down" or not. I'm sure we've had to show some flexibility here to get this big deal through, as we may have done on other deals in the past.

Anyone who uses the term "the boy" deserves contempt and the ****ing idiot still holds the perception of us when he played, no ****ing way we will be battling for relegation and I bet if we get 2 more world class players he will suddenly change his tune when everyone else does and say top 10.

No. My (and i assume St Marco's) thoughts aren't evidence based. It's simply a hunch that he has backed down. Could be right, could be wrong. Who knows.

Agents would only "back down" if no other offer for their player was on the table

So far, it looks like it's only us who wants him

But, the "achilles heel" to playing hardball is the fact that UNTIL the player signs on the dotted line, the agent can still be trying to sell his player elsewhere.

So, until Wanyama actually SIGNS, he is not our player

Deals have been scuppered at the last minute before in footbal ....... by AGENTSl

another **** pundit due on motd. What a waste of licence payers fees.

Celtic are a bigger club than us. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either MLG or an idiot. The league they play in though is crap and the TV money is not there. That is why we are able to pay more. The league and the money is the real reason we are able to sign their players. Let's not kid ourself that VW or any of these world class player grew up dreaming of playing for saints.

If we build something now, maybe in the future it will be true but at the moment we are just a medium sized provincial club with a rich backer. This isn't slating us, just the truth.

Or, he's right. Saints is a step down from Celtic.

It's the League and the money he's coming for.

Bloody hell, a reasoned and well balanced argument! Totally agree, but I do find myself getting agitated when other clubs bad mouth us regardless. I agree we are what we are, but we all know we are going places. Don't mind people telling truth, but bad mouthing us for no reason, nah, thats when we fight back!

Hartson is right when he says that Saints are a step down in terms of the "size" of the club but he doesn't seem to be able to deduce or rationalise why one of the "big" clubs didn't come in for him.

Maybe, John, that's because they don't think he's as good as you do and that a smaller club like Southampton is actually a better match for developing his talents at this moment in time.

Just a hunch...

Edit: ...and if Wanyama is as good as Hartson says he is then surely he'll help turn Southampton from a "bottom 6" side into a team competing in the top half. You can't have it both ways John me ok' mucka....

Agree again! If we get three good years out of him and become solid top half side, I will be happy for him to move to 'top 4' side for double the money! Until then, I look forward to seeing him take us forward

Just shows 1. How clueless a lot of people in football are about Saints (we have some excellent players) and 2. That we have signed a good player!

This is the same John Hartson who left Celtic for then Championship team West Brom. Pot, meet kettle.

How he's become a pundit I don't know. At least Wanyama is joining a 'bottom 6' Premier League club rather than a then top 6 Championship club.

Bellend.

Is this the same John Hartson who left Celtic for that European titan West Brom, a club so big they signed him after they finished 19th in the Premier League and got relegated?

Clueless.

He was 31 meaning he'd spent the pinnacle of his career banging in goals in a poor division. Even Hooper has already very nearly equalled his goals tally in less games at the age of 25 and now he's looking to leave to further his career in England. Scotland is a decent stepping stone. At least Wanyama is looking to further his career early rather than waste another 2/3 seasons.

Anyway, I do apologise, whilst at the age of 22, Hartson was playing for the mighty West Ham who finished 8th in the Premier League, where Leeds, Blackburn and Villa all finished above them. His career hardly went up after leaving West Ham did it? Victor will leave us to a higher team, I'm sure of it judging by Celtic fans comments and videos I've seen. Hartson went downhill with Celtic being the only highlight.

I dont understand all this Celtic is a "big" club - history maybe - but if your a player you would i think like to test yourself, the celtic players have no real test each week its a bit like the current Man U team playing in our League 2 - Ole Victor is going to commence battle each week with a real test of his skills every Saturday in the EPL

They are a big club, no doubt about it. A big club in a poor league with a poor tv deal but still a big club.

Well you could say the same about PFC then if it is based upon fans and support - for me just dont see it ,they are the biggest club in one of the smallest leagues and the Barca game is a one off in comparrision to who they trot out and play week in and week out

Who was the last 'big' player to come down from the SPL and really excel either in the Premier League or abroad? I'm not saying there hasn't been many (I don't think there has to be fair), just can't really remember

Stiliyan Petrov, £6.5m signing from Celtic; 180 games for Villa, club captain, fans favourite and very much missed last season.
