Who was the last 'big' player to come down from the SPL and really excel either in the Premier League or abroad? I'm not saying there hasn't been many (I don't think there has to be fair), just can't really remember

Henrik Larsson was "decent" when he went to Barca and then later to Man U (although a short stint).

Too old to be considered as one that exceled though probably...

Looks like the only thing that could stop this going through now is if he fails his medical.

Reading the Celtic forum, he'd have played in one of their fixtures this week or next week had we not been close to signing him so I doubt there's anything seriously wrong with him that would see him failing the medical.

I can't think of many. Brian Laudrup was class for Rangers in the 90's but sadly due to injury never got much of a look in at Chelsea. Wanyama has Champions League experience though so that should help. People complained we didn't have much Premier League experience in the squad when we got promoted - with Wanyama, we're all set for the Champions League 13/14. :-)

Shaun Maloney is probably the last vaguely decent Prem-standard player to come from the SPL, they've not really been brimming with talent for a while, at least not talent that's more likely to sign for an English club than a continental European one, anyway. They're either Scottish and not good enough or they're not British and could sign for any number of clubs in any number of countries. Arguably the only other one recently is Steven Davis !

How about Gattuso from Rangers to Milan (eventually?) ? That was probably over 10 years ago as well.

That Niemi bloke was quite good.

Wanyama is extremely good at the short range passing, sort of Barca passing style, but his long range passing is woeful.

That's good enough for me. Not the style we play any more anyway. I still have nightmares about Higginbottom's persistent and aimless hoofs up to an isolated Crouch. Glad those days are gone.

Gattusso (spelling may be wrong) was world class

I'd throw Di Canio into the mix.

Steven Fletcher? Not sure if excell is the right word but he's an above average striker and if he didn't have his injury problems he'd probably play for a bigger club.

Guys the SPL really isn't that bad, I mean it's not exactly unpredictable (Celtic) but I've seen a few good derby's and not just the Glasgow one, The Hibs-Hearts Edinburgh derby can be v.entertaining, EG the Scottish cup final. I'm not saying its great but it can at least match The Championship.

It doesn't match the Championship, look at the size of the 11 biggest clubs in the Championship, all of them would be the 2nd biggest in the current SPL. Even beyond the top 11 in the Championship there would be other Championship sides that would also match up, plus Wolves, Bristol City, Bradford, Sheff Utd in League One and even, dare I say it... Pompey in League 2.
