bah i sooo wanted ever banega :( just look at the class of the guy

After seeing that, I want him too! Signing Wanyama doesn't mean we wouldn't move on from Banega though - from what I gather Wanyama is a defensive midfielder and judging from that video and from what I've read, Banega would be better suited to the role that Davis ended up playing in at the tail end of last season.

Yeah i was reading a old man utd forum thread on banega the other day there fans were drooling over him too,he was being compared with modric but was said to be much more solid in the tackle and have a much better final ball, they also said he totally dictated the way valencia played.

I watched him against barcelona last year and remember him looking **** hot in that too.

Wanyama could be an absolute rock as a dm but i think we were pretty solid with cork and morgan anyway, that said i am happy if we sign him i just think banega could have give us something extra creatively.

Hope we still go for him but if not gaston could very well step up if we play him in the hole

I'm not convinced that Forren is 'in favour' with Pochettino (reading between the lines in last week's press conference). Unless we sign another CB I think our default pairing will be Yoshida and Lovren.

Lescott is possibly leaving City, would be a good addition and first choice centre back

I'd like to see us do what Man city do when Toure and Barry sit in front of the back 4, Tevez (will be someone else now)and Aguero up front with Nasri and Silva having almost free roles in between them. Almost a 4-2-2-2. Ramirez and Lallana aren't naturally wide players but if they had licence to roam then they'd have Wanyama and Schniderlinn behind them

-----------Boruc

Clyne Yoshida lovern Shaw

-----Schindelin---Wanyama

------Ramirez------ Lallana

------Rodriguez------Lambert

Nope. Dont think Gashton is good enough or what we need.

Alright alps? I ain't sure bout ramirez either, he is skills player but i ain't sure he fits in with our style of play or whatever. I don't reckon we'd of signed him if ponch was manager last summer.

I reckon Ramirez will be an impact sub, and if he dont like it he can cry off to Fiorentina.

Was thinking the same; impact sub bit. He is a luxury player and one that can certainly unlock defences.

Technically probably our best player, but hasn't shown the right work ethos so far.

Fluid formations and free roles are ok going forward, but less so defensively. Who gives width to cover the full backs and track the opposing full back? On paper that line up presumably leaves it to Lallana and Gaston which means that in reality they're starting wide and to a large extent expected to stay wide. That doesn't suit Gaston at all.

Why is holding a different point of view "ridiculous"? I disagree with Alpine but its still a valid opinion.

Because he is good enough and is what we need ? It irks me that people do not give overseas players enough time, should every player signed from abroad not be given a little bit of time to adjust we would not have seen the like of Henry, Ronaldo, Drogba, bergkamp etc

Besides, what I have seen from Gaston is that he is easily good enough, he seems to have the ability to make stuff happen unlike anyone else on the team. He needs more pace and intelligence infront of him however

I can't really see where all the anti Gaston stuff is coming from. I work with a lot of Arsenal & Manure fans & pretty much all of them have said that gaston is an awesome player who will only get better the longer he plays in England. He needs to be played in the correct position, I:E Attacking midfielder. Do some of our fans look at him and think about his price tag before his skills? if he cost us £1.000.000 would we think more of him?

Agree with all that. I just don't feel the need to "ridicule" someone else's opinion just because its the opposite of mine (Pompey fans excepted of course!)

Anyway, we digress...

Any opinion is valid. The issue is .. how much sense does it make? My opinion is that to write off Ramirez at this point is lunacy.

Is the Scottish transfer record really "only" £11m? Is £12.5m really stunning? Have I just lost touch with football/reality to think its really not that much?

It doesn't get you that much these days but no surprise clubs haven't spent much from the scottish league because the standard is so dreadful!

I'm in the 'Gaston will come good' opinion camp, but that doesn't rule out the possibility that he'll have a 'below expectations' season. I don't think holding the opinion that he might not turn out as good as we all hope he does is "lunacy". I think Alpine is more likely to be proved wrong than right. If Alpine starts forecasting snowfall in Southampton today then I might be moved to label him a crackpot :)

Tbh. A striker and cover at right back are probably what we need and the striker needs a bit of pace as that's one thing we lack. Who will be the cover at right back and left back if we didn't sign anyone?

Indeed. Alex Ferguson at the end of last season said young and foreign players need more than 1 season to get to grips with the PL. I think he knows what he's talking about.

Doubt we will change from 4-2-3-1

Wanyama either replacing Cork, or alongside Cork with Schneiderlin moving up the pitch to Davis' role

Sent from my Lumia 800 using Board Express

Yep, I've suggested before, Schneiderlin leading the high press from further up the pitch could work.

Playing a 4 3 4 1 formation might be considered cheating.

Pretty sure Ramirez will be heavily involved in our plans for next season (rightly so). If he wasn't going to be then we would have looked to sell him, and we haven't done so.

People always forget its a squad game, injuries, loss of form etc come about and it would be good to be able to rest players occassionally.

All of Cork, Wanyama and Schneiderlin will start a lot of games.

Boruc

Clyne Lovren Yoshi Shaw

Morgan Wanyama

J Rod Gaston New player

New player

subs

Gassiniga, new LB/RB, Forren, SRL, Lallana, Corky

Midfield looks very powerful and if we were to get Banega it would be up there with the best in the prem.

However we badly need pace up front and Gazzaniga on the bench does not give me any confidence if Boruc gets injured.

Top priority must now be a pacy striker to open up our attacking play.

Haven't seen very much of Wanyama, but there are plenty of postive posts on here and positive notes elsewhere, which is very pleasing. Hope he settles in well and makes a good impact on the pitch.

IMHO Gaston is more likely to have a more settled season. I am looking forward to him being a key part of this season. The only way i think he would go is if he was used as a makeweight for a (potentially) better attacking midfielder like this Banega chap. But Gaston has the ability to have a serious impact this season and I hope he does.
