Victor Wanyama - Officially Signed

how can Celtic fans possibly know what a good player looks like, there aren't any in jockland, if there were they'd be playing elsewhere. It is impossible to judge a good player in your side when the opposition is of the standard of Inverness and St Johnstone. If we played Eastleigh every week our 3rd team reserves would look good. When we were in League 1 all of our players looked like the Bee's Bollix but as we've risen through the divisions they've fallen rapidly by the wayside. We also gave a couple of top sides a run for their money in the Cup, remember Man U, just losing because Dickson was an utter c..t, and yet those players in the main haven't made the step up apart from a few exceptional talents who've always got another gear in the box. We are going to regret this deal if it goes through, mark my words.

Look at it this way though - there are Celtic fans over there convinced that he could, and I quote, "stroll into the first XI of any side in Europe". If we readjust that, considering players will look better than they are in the SPL, I reckon he'd probably be a good fit for Southampton. If they were saying that he could do a job in the Premier League, I might be worried - not least because they don't rate the Premier League very highly!

Well personally I'd rather we spent our money elsewhere and let someone else discover the limitations of Wanyama. 12 million is far too much but as Nicola won't pay that anyway perhaps it's not all that important.

Nicola is willing to pay £12 million, we know this already.

Do you have any reason to doubt his ability other than the fact he plays in the SPL? He's 21 years old and held his own twice against arguably the best midfield of all time. Not all great players are born into elite footballing nations.

I don't know that at all, who says the real hard core transfer fee is 12 million ? Anyway it wasn't Barca's full side out Song started, so did Bartra and they are not Barca's first choice players. We need to be careful what yardstick we use here.

It's a pretty ridiculous arguement to say he isn't worth the money because he plays in scotland. He's also Kenyan, should we rule him out because no Kenyan has played in the premier league before, therefore he must be crap?

IMO he´s definitely worth £12m at this stage due to the type of player he is and potential shown so far.

If it was a tricky and pacey winger you could easier say that maybe the league is so bad that the player looks good but not for this type of player IMO.

Like De Ridder that looked great running circles around opposition, but that was in a bad league so the step was too big for him to make when he came here.

Are you suggesting there is some kind of fairweather transfer fee involved? A poseur payout?

no I just read various press speculation, nothing confirms to me that we have offered Celtic 12 million £, it goes up by the hour.

to me it's just agent bollix with some sort of factual base. Look at Pienaar's transfer to spurs, you'll get the lie of the land from that.

I've seen a lot of Celtic fans point to the Barca match as evidence of Wanyam's awesomeness saying things like, "he bossed one of the best teams ever".

Well, here are the stats from the 2-1 home win:

[h=3]Stats[/h]

[h=5]Celtic[/h][h=5]Barcelona[/h][h=5]Possession[/h]

  • 34%

  • 66%

[h=5]Goal attempts[/h]

  • 3

  • 25

[h=5]On target[/h]

  • 3

  • 14

[h=5]Off target[/h]

  • 0

  • 11

[h=5]Corners[/h]

  • 2

  • 7

[h=5]Fouls[/h]

  • 9

  • 9

[h=5]Offsides[/h]

  • 4

Now, don't get me wrond, that was a great result for Celtic but, let's face it, they got dicked and a combination of goalkeeping and less-than-usually clinical finishing along with some cinical finishing of their own won them that match. As Window Cleaner says, even if they had been the better team it would not prove much. One should always do well to remeber that Vincent Pericard once played for Juventus.

I will say just on thing here Marc Bartra, a nonsensical player at CB which is why he has played about 10 games since he's been at Barca. Woeful against Bayern in the CL semi this year, which is why they prefer to use a DM (Mascherano) at CB instead of him.

Overlooking him bullying some of the best midfielders in the world off the ball, scoring and driving forwards with the ball from central midfield.

he wont bully Kevin Nolan and Charlie Adam like that, that is for sure.

won a few free headers and passed in sideways and backwards? Seems like the Kenyan Ray Wilkins from that clip.

Are you joking? Watch 0:52 again. Walks through three Barcelona midfielders (!) like they're not there, head up, sees a team-mate, plays the pass, makes a run. When his team-mate can't pick him out he busts a gut to make the challenge and wins it. He effectively takes the ball from the edge of Celtic's third to just outside the penalty box without losing possession. That is great stuff, and would rank up with Cork and Schneiderlin's best moments from last season against inferior opposition.

Barcelona win the ball back against everyone, and a 21 year-old's holding them off by himself.

Wish i hadnt seen that..... Looks like he panics on the ball a bit, likes an aimless punt upfield and quite a few missed passes in that footage.

Seems to favour the use of the arms in the tackle (its not rugby mate!) will earn him alot of yellows in the prem!

Is he better than Morgan? No.

Better than Cork? Maybe.

12m is a gamble for sure.

it's too much, wouldn't mind the player, don't like the fee being bandied about but it could be 6 million in all reality.

I am also slightly concerned that this will be trumpeted by the club as a major coup look we've signed Victor for 10 million, great huh, oh by the way we've sold Morgan to the arse for 15 million.... still Victor is sh*t hot right, beat Barca reserves all by himself.

He gets a lot of yellows which given the standard of the opposition is unquieting; 10 yellows and a red in domestic football last season I think.

Ray Wilkins got 84 England caps and played for Milan, so I would probably take the Kenyan Ray Wilkins.

Just to build on that as team stats don't really tell you personal performance, I've just checked whoscored and looking at his performance as a 21yr old this year in the CL only this year his ratings on whoscored.com are bloody impressive.

Anything over 7 is very good (Morgan was our only player at the end of season averaging 7.23), 7.5 is excellent and anything over 8 is Messi esq.

Only 2 poor ones away from home but the rest is quality and that 1 performance looks like it was amazing.

19-09-2012 Celtic - Benfica 7.01

02-10-2012 Spartak Moscow - Celtic 6.59

23-10-2012 Barcelona - Celtic 7.09

07-11-2012 Celtic - Barcelona 8.31

20-11-2012 Benfica - Celtic 7.43

12-02-2013 Celtic - Juventus 7.03

06-03-2013 Juventus - Celtic 6.35

so as well as being able to win headers with no one around him and pass sideways and backwards he runs around alot and is quite strong. I'm sure our fans will love him.

4 minutes of a game that lasted 94 mins? I assume for the other 90 he was chasing Barca's shadows? No shame in that though.

The ball is not in play for 94 minutes.

For example... in the 2009/10 season on average in a Premier League matches the ball was in play for 62.39 minutes.

Wanyama is only one player out of 22 on the pitch.
