New Pompey Song

Ohh oh the Pompey, the lowly Pompey

You give us laughter, the way you play

You'll never know skates, how much we hate you

So please don't take, the laughter away

to the tune of the "youll never know dear, how much i love you..." song.

Open to alternative lyrics. Possibly the second and fourth line could be better. Thoughts?

Pompey who?

You don't live in the city do you? There will always be a Pompey to me, I was dragged up the hate them, my mates hated them and I'll make sure my kids hate them.

Our fans from outside the city seem to think its that horrible word "banter". To me they could be 3 divisions above us or 3 divisions below us my hatred for every thing that disgusting, cheating, charity robbing, cowardly, gutless city/ club stands for will never be forgotten.

Southampton born, bred, die.

And I thought being away from Hampshire for a decade and hearing the mislead sympathy for them and praise for the underdog in the most successful period they have had in the modern era had just served to polarise me...... Can't compete with that degree of partisan behaviour!!

Would you hate someone purely for supporting Portsmouth?

I wouldn't treat someone differently for supporting Portsmouth if they were civil and human. Unfortunately the majority of Portsmouth fans are **** heads and think that because we support different teams that's a good reason to hate someone. I wouldn't hate someone unless they hated me first.

Why bother with Pompey songs we were above them for 27 years they had 5 their mins in the sun and look where that got them it could well be another 27 years before they play in the same league as us again just forget them.

I got into all sorts of trouble on another forum when I said that if you're not from Southampton you will never really understand the hatred thing from that end of the M27. My comment wasn't about being a better supporter because I am local, but that's just how people reacted. I will say it again that unless you've been exposed to their hatred (locally) you will never get the feeling. I'm, also, not saying everyone in Southampton/Portsmouth hates each other. It just depends on how much you've been exposed to it (and I worked down there for years).

Yup pretty much sums up how most people i know who were born and bred in southampton feel. I still won't forget the league cup game against them when they booed Ted Bates minutes silence.

That day was utter hatred all around the city, with pretty much every local nutjob wandering around st mary's before the game.

But then as you say the out of towners only really pay it lip service as they don't really understand it.

It also depends on being able to separate out hating someone for being born 17 miles away. Having been born in and lived in and around Southampton for most of my life, plus having done my fair share of work down that end of the M27 (including now) I still find I'm able to accept the fact that, while I hope their club remains in obscurity for a very long time and they suffer miserably on the football pitch, I can't really bring myself to hate a whole population who I'll likely never meet. Plus I've had plenty of banter with Pompey supporters who are mates and/or I've worked with. Horses for courses, everyone takes the rivalry differently, but "exposure to it" is a relatively minor factor IMO.

How about no Pompey songs at all so we can get on supporting the Saints instead of focusing on this pointless obsession with a team now 3 divisions distant from us. How about it eh?

Agree with this there are to many renditions of anti Pompey songs during the games.

Ahh yes but we'll need to get relegated a couple of times to play them within that 27 years.

To use the word "hate" in the context of football rivalry is ludicrous and devalues the true meaning of hate.I cannot imagine any sane Saints supporter actually wishing a Pompey supporter to become seriously ill or have a similar disaster befall them. That is what "hate" means to me.

I'm aware that in slang culture the word "hate" is used indiscriminately, but in my opinion hate ought to be reserved for more serious dislikes and loathe is a better word to describe football rivalry.

I do think that an anti-Pompey song that used mocking humour and wit to insult them is long overdue, and this is a step in the right direction.

A good example of this is the Man U song satire-"In your Liverpool slum>"

Not read the whole thread but what tune are you suggesting we ding this one to?

I was born in Southampton and grew up in Hythe but as a child I had no problem with Pompey. In fact through listening to Radio Solent I actually stuck up for all the south's teams to do well, but especially Southampton of course!

However, having moved away from the area when I was ten I came back to the city for university and I shared a flat with three others in my third year including a Pompey fan. His continual over-the-top banter drove me mad. I didn't hate the guy - he was still a friend, but I loathed his support for Pompey and thus I came to dislike Pompey with a venom too.

Having said all of that, I think the hatred that some people have for Pompey goes too far and is very dangerous. Worse than that, such hatred for them only makes us like them. If we really think their attitude to us stinks (and it usually does) then lets show that we are better than them by not stooping to their level.

Furthermore, I have to seriously ask some fans which is more important to them:

1. That Pompey fail.

2. That Southampton succeed.

To me it seems that some fans have got to a stage where they would rather Pompey fail than that we succeed. That is not supporting Saints - that is anti-supporting Pompey! So let's get it sorted and first and foremost, let's support Saints!

SO, if we are to be true Saints fans rather than Anti-Pompey fans, our priority must be to sing songs about Saints rather than songs about Pompey.

Finally, the song is called "You are my Sunshine, my only sunshine" not "You'll never know dear, how much I love you..." and here are some Southampton supporting words for it (and in particular in support of Luke Shaw):

Our left back's Luke Shaw,

Only one Luke Shaw,

He makes us happy, in every game;

A great defender, great going forwards,

For sure he is the new Gareth Bale!

OK - anyone improve on that? :)
