Giordano Posted 15 June, 2013 Share Posted 15 June, 2013 Maya Yoshida, CB, full Japan international 24 years old 25 national appearances. International Captain. Gaston Ramirez,AM, full Uruguayan International, 22 years old, 14 national appearances. Number 10 " play maker". Vegard Forren, CB/FB, fullNorwegian International, 25 years old, 6 national appearances. Promising young CB for Norway. Dejan Loren. CB, full Croatian international, 23 years old, 17 national appearances. Promising young CB for Croatia. Whoever is next its a good bet he will be 22-25, a full international already and full of potential.
Colinjb Posted 15 June, 2013 Share Posted 15 June, 2013 And hungry, don't forget hungry... But yes, our employment criteria does seem to be very consistent. I would widen the age bracket to include anyone who is under 25. Mayuka was 21, a full international and ACN winner on joining. Clyne was also 21 and while not a full international had been capped at the highest level below.
SaintBobby Posted 15 June, 2013 Share Posted 15 June, 2013 I like our recruitment policy - but can't really explain why. Is the idea we keep these players for 8-10 years or that we always have players in the early to mid 20s?

Remarkable though that despite the apparent pedigree of Ramirez (who I think will come good),Yoshida, and Forren, our more reliable performers over the season were Clyne and Rodriguez (when played in position ). Is the idea we keep these players for 8-10 years or that we always have players in the early to mid 20s? The Barcelona team of a couple of years ago had in the main players that had been playing years together. The team gets refreshed as and when required. It's a long term policy which seems to work for them. IMHO the greatest teams always have continuity and that's not just managers.

Buying the right players at this age will hopefully ensure an able team that that will be able to improve. It may also show an acceptance that the very best of the best players will leave, normally just before they peak around 30... but for big money and having served us well in the mean time. It could leave us in a strong position... or leave us eventually vulnerable if we cannot keep the talent flowing in, as became Wigan.

Ties in with what I heard this time last year, that we could forget media speculation at the time, club were only looking at U25s that were or had been regular U21 Internationals that had progressed (or were likely to, Clyne? ) to full national side

Simply extrapolating your presumption from 4 signings is not accurate. It could be that the pattern is that every 5th signing is a 38-year-old journeyman with a dodgy knee and a penchant for cocaine and prostitutes. Which, in my opinion, is exactly what this team is lacking.

Your example shows that there's always alternatives, however unlikely, and i totally accept there may be an alternate outcome to that which i suggest seems evident from the " pattern". Point is, There does seem to be a pattern though. If the pattern continues then our next likeliest purchases will share some or all of those characteristics. If the pattern stops and MP decides a 38 year old then fair enough, its kess likely than a 22-25 year old international though.

Giordano Posted 16 June, 2013 Author Share Posted 16 June, 2013 So where does Boruc fit into this philosophy then? There are exceptions, and there will be more. i just see a recurring coincidence of factors amongst sufficient of the recent intake to suggest a series of fairly strict and determinable criteria are being applied by the transfer " committee".
