So they have time to gel. Next question.

We're useless. We would have had more time to gel if we'd signed Lovren a week ago.

I'm furious. And think i could run the club better myself. From a PC. In the Swiss Alps.

I'm concerned with how we're turning into a cynical football-centred business. I long for the good old days, where we were a small family concern where you could get a room for the night and possibly a small under-cooked breakfast if you got up between 7:30 and 7:45.

Absolutely.

Signing players this early clearly gives the other teams in the league an idea of what our tactics for the new season are going to be. They'll then know exactly what they'll need to do to beat us.

Poor form Nicola and Mauriccio.

A change at the top us needed if we are going to avoid relegation.

I'm disappointed that I'm unlikely to be disappointed :)

What are the club playing at? Signing internationals well before the season starts. I like my CBs parachuted in at the last possible minute, ta ;)

"Are we signing players too early?"

The amusingly sarcastic replies suggest this is a silly question and it is tempting to add to the sarcasm, but just taking it seriously for a moment, there are such obvious reasons why the answer is "No". Signings made before pre-season prevent a player that our club wants from going elsewhere, allows the player full pre-season to gel with the squad and gives maximum time for coaching the player into the Southampton way of playing. Late signings, such as last year, can mean putting out an inadequate team leading to a poor run of early season results. So far it's 'a signing' not 'signings', but it looks like there are are more to come. Exciting wide player, please.

If I hadn't logged in again today I would have missed this explanation. Thanks Proffered.

Just because the season has ended does mean the club shut down for the summer. The players are back in training at the beginning of July . So I hope we have completed the majority of signings etc. The sooner the better as it enables the players to find accomodation bring their families over and then there is a small aspect of those that might need working visas.

Onwards and upwards

I think it's a brilliant idea bringing in the players we have decided we want early and allowing them to settle in. At the same time if other players suitable become available we will still be able to make bids for them.

To be honest I can see more and more teams buying early. They want their main targets in and settled early. Liverpool, man city man Utd and Chelsea have already openly stated that they want to do business early. This is a new era. poeple will still see teams make last minute buys but I can deffo see a change in strategy.

We signed J-Rod on 10th June last season, so how are we now signing players earlier? There are 2 weeks until the players come back for pre-season, how is Lovren going to gel in that time? As usual there will be a few signings in June (or in most cases announcements as the transfer window is not open yet) more will happen in July and as usual most business will happen for PL in the last few days before the window closes. I hope we get couple more in by July 1st, a RB, LB, AM and striker are the prioritised needs in my view, but I bet we will also bring in at least one in the last week.

The transfer window is not open yet.

Page 180 of the Premier League rulebook...

V.2.

The first Transfer Window in any year shall commence at midnight on the last day of the Season and shall end on 31st August next if a Working Day or, if not, on the first Working Day thereafter, at a time to be determined by the Board.

With our potentially perilous financial state it doesn't make sense to sign players this early as it makes our wage bill more of a burden. The transfer window doesn't even shut until the 13th of September FFS!

So you're saying we are already three days behind schedule vs last year?

Pathetic, shambolic way to run a football club.

Appreciate that out there on the Island its still the 1980s, but as Nigel Adkins famously said, "Do try to keep up". The 'gelling' of new players into the squad will begin when the players report back for pre-season, so players signed prior to that will benefit from the whole of pre-season compared to any later signings who will have less time. Doesn't mean there may not be later signings if the right player isn't available until later but surely its common sense to say that the earlier the better.

He's already said he will use that time to get to know area and get himself settled before meeting up with his new teammates. So when pre-season starts he can concentrate 100% on tactics and getting to know team-mates without those personal life distractions. No such thing as too early.

In pre-season it’s important to have all players working together, so Lovren’s signing is a very good job by the Chairman and all of the staff at the Club.

So what's he going to do after tomorrow, quick visit to Ocean Village and take his missus to West Quay, job done? :) I didn't say it was too early, but difficult to gel with his team mates when they are on holidays in various parts of the world for another 2 weeks or playing in tournaments

I'm not one for posting often on this 'ere forum, but I do spend a lot of time reading other peoples posts....so I am somewhat confused as to whether early signing are good or not....I am certain that a number of the post on this thread are meant to be sarcastic in there nature, but as is often the case sarcasm doesn't translate well in the written word.

Also there was much harumphing last pre-season with the supposed lack of transfer activity in the close season, with either the purchasing of the wrong type of player, purchasing too late etc. This close season the "management" have decided to go and buy early, and its still not right (to some on here!). I think its a case of buggered if you don't and buggered if you do with regards to transfers. IMHO early can only be good, to allow the new player to settle in to his surroundings, then they can crack on with the business of playing football.

Awaits expectantly for the torrent of abuse that is likely to follow when an infrequent poster posts.....:(

Probably go down to Pompey, see what a third world country looks like.

I'm sure the OP was fully expecting that, Calne Saint, given that his opening post is dripping in sarcasm itself. The thread is an exercise in sarcasm.

Trouble is though, if he gets settled too early he'll become complacent, simply not 'hungry enough' to prove himself when the season starts etc.

A day to look at West Quay, and Ocean Village with the wife, send her back to France before a couple of weeks kerb crawling, and getting ****ed. Probably end up with a newly aquired BMW X5* wrapped around a bus shelter in London Rd., or Bedford Place, in the early hours.

End in tears.
