Ground Capacity

I've heard a rumour that covert construction is underway to build a stand on top of one of the gas holders which can be raised (gassed up) depending on ticket sales. When we get to the Champions League both gas holders will have stands and the Northam will be converted to terracing and renamed the Kortese Kop.

Don't shoot the messenger...

The club will expand the stadium, I think.

But they aren't going to jump the chasm in two leaps.

Basically, a small-ish expansion is very expensive (per extra seat) and a big expansion is only quite expensive (but much less so, per extra seat)

Very true. But it's not an either/or situation

Indeed, but a stadium expansion, while showy, will mean very little, if anything it will just drain immediate budget with a minimal long term effect on turnover if we sustain top flight status.

In the very long term and assuming the Cortese ambitions are not b*llsh*t then it may make sense, but in the next 5 years. No.

If you have a rich benefactor, it's a capital outlay. You don't need to worry about the "immediate budget".

It also doesn't have a "minimal long term effect on turnover".

If (HUGE if!), you spend c£150m now as a capital outlay now for an extra c.£15m per annum, it neither "drains your immediate budget" nor is the long term effect "minimal"

While I accept your point about immediate budget, this is £150 million as a capital outlay. With a benefactor of the level where this can be afforded an extra £15 million a year is simply not going to make much difference to them. This also assumes that an extra £15 million a year will be certain, as clubs such as Middlesbrough and Coventry have found, large facilities that do not fill themselves can very quickly become a drain rather then an aid.

Putting this into the context of the OP who asked if ground capacity should be upped to back up our continued spending, there simply isn't any logic to it currently as our spending is not dependent on our crowds and the trends in english football show an even greater reliance on TV money and benefactor backing going forward.

It is not going to happen.

Agree there's a big IF as to whether an expansion is a white elephant, but putting that big IF to one side, expanding because of business reasons makes sense.

Sure, a sugar daddy and TV revenues are the big income streams, but that's not a reason to overlook ticket/merchandising/hospitality revenues. I mean it's not as if they don't give a damn what the ticket prices are...they do...they're trying to make money....

Similarly IF they could make additional cash, by expanding the stadium, building a hotel, having a monkey petting zoo or whatever, they'd do so!

The ground will be expanded in the next 5 years, people are kidding themselves if they think its not going to happen.

Also, yes, the TV revenues dwarf the Turnstile income... but to argue that the club shouldn't invest increasing its profile, gaining more fans and improving its long term income is non sensical. If you can't capitalize on our current successes and the objectives we have, then when it ends, it will all have been for nothing.

Bayern have record merchandising turnovers which put them on a par with the best in Europe despite having a much small tv rights income. The premier will not always attract the current market, other leagues will develop which will detract from it, and club merchandising and turnstile income will rise in importance. That is how I see it. The club can not and should not stand still, all routes of improvement should be utilized. And I want a St James' park style stand to go to!!!

The way we are going 32000 capacity will not sustain our spending.

We will have to increase capacity at some point to compete.

How much?

40000, 50000 or move?

And the cost?

How's your capacity you skate c##t? Close to half filling it! Disgusting part time fans only selling 5k STs eh?
