The 2013 Confederations Cup Thread

I saw someone comment on twitter that he and his friends decided to have a drink every time someone dived in the game.

They´re probably well asleep by now...

Or dead....even an old school defender like Lawrenson is defending it. "Its what happens these days". I do hate that attitude.

Tonight is Uruguay v Tahiti on BBC Three Red Button at 8pm. I would expect Gaston to play as he missed the last game but saying that, Forlan took his place, played very well and scored so who knows.
Would expect Ramirez to play as they'll rest a lot of their side that played against Nigeria.

You do realise Ramirez started the match against Spain? Not sure if Forlan was injured or banned but the commentators were indicating that Uruguay wanted play to go through him. Would indicate they place a decent amount of trust in him.

This abel Hernandez looks impressive, good powerful striker - reminds me a bit of Lukaku.

Yes I know its not hard to look a handful against Taihti, but worth a look maybe,

thought the same. Knew he is highly rated in Italy, but he looks decent

I've rated him for a while.

Perfect age too and could be available for a smaller fee now Palermo have been relegated.

No, it must be the fact that the players around him aren't of high enough quality/on the same wavelength.

that argument is stupid. why people say that is stupid. (i know you are not actually meaning it here)

Like when papa waigo was always woefully offside. people actually said that it was because he was miles better than everyone else.

that he has. Watched this game to see if he would spark.

just seemed to trot around doing nothing special.

hmmmm

As he does in every, single, game I've ever seen him play.

I'm so desperate for him to do well, absolutely dying to see him become a star, but he just doesn't do it for me at all. I keep watching him in the hope he will, but it's always the same. Playing around on the peripheral of the game. Wouldn't really bother me too much if we re-couped in the summer, although I don't think we will - reckon we will persevere.

Exactly. I rate the bloke, but hate some of the ridiculous over-the-top excuses some make for him.

What are you on about? No he hasn't.

A year and a half - full Serie A season, Olympics, full Premier League season with no preseason, Confederations Cup. Obviously he hasn't played every possible game without any breaks but that's an awful lot for a young player before you add in moving across the globe, learning a new language, his family issues etc. Always a lot of talk about young Englishmen like Jack Wilshere being overworked and I think Ramirez has been through a lot as well. Rest and a full preseason will do him good.

To be fair, Louis Suarez is in exactly the same boat.

There's not really any excuse for failing to perform against Tahiti!

I know he's been awful. I'm not defending his performances, just expressing what I think would be best for him at Saints now.

I assume he was at the Olympics for some of Bologna's preseason, as Cork was for ours, but what I meant was he didn't have any Saints preseason so couldn't meet the players, gel, be coached, learn the language etc before he was put into action.

Wiki says he played 33 games for Bologna.

Suarez was a couple of years older when he went to Liverpool, not a 'young player' as such. It's the amount of work he's doing as a young kid that worries me, must have been fatigued at times.

He had something like a 6 week break between his last game for us and his first this summer for Uruguay. He didn't start playing for us last season til late September and has missed plenty of football for both us and Uruguay. Look at how much football some of the spanish players play? Or people like Ashley Cole or Frank Lampard over the last few years.

so, he missed a few games for bologna, a fair few for us too

this season is huge. without a big improvement he will struggle to realise his potential

They're all much older! A lot of the Spanish youth playing at tournament level are in the reserves for big Spanish teams and don't play every week.

Ramirez is 22. He's not a young developing lad like Luke Shaw, he's a year younger than Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin. He SHOULD be playing loads of games at this stage of his career.

Tanadari Lee was another one, his running off the ball was so good we didn't have players around him with the vision to pick his runs out.

He was 20 at the start of that cycle - I would agree with you if he was going to play in tournaments next summer and the summer afterwards, but not as it is.
