Colinjb Posted 14 June, 2013 Posted 14 June, 2013 (edited) Have been looking forward to this, especially with the interest that we have with two players participating. (Gaston Ramirez and Maya Yoshida, Tadanari Lee didn't make the Japan squad sadly.) Full Squad Lists here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_FIFA_Confederations_Cup_squads The representatives from Oceania, Tahiti stand out as the underdogs, therefore I would love to see them surprise a very people. With all but one of their squad playing in Tahiti itself it will be unlikely. Group A does look particularly tasty, with no USA around this time I fancy Mexico as a dark horse, saw their Olympic team in Coventry last year and they were superb. Not surprised to see Brazil as favourites, particularly at home, but with a weaker group and Brazil's squad really not being up to the standard of past greats I can't look past the Spaniards. It should therefore be Spain + One other from group B, fingers crossed Gaston can show why we put 12 million down for him and get the Uruguayans into the semi finals. Odds: Brazil, 7/5 Spain, 13/8 Italy, 6/1 Uruguay, 10/1 Mexico, 12/1 Nigeria, 25/1 Japan, 33/1 Tahiti, 1500/1 Fixtures: Group A 15/6: Brazil 3-0 Japan, Maya Yoshida played the full 90 minutes. 16/6: Mexico 1-2 Italy 19/6: Brazil v Mexico, 8pm 19/6: Italy v Japan, 11pm 22/6: Italy v Brazil, 8pm 22/6: Japan v Mexico, 11pm Group B: 16/6: Spain 2-1 Uruguay, Gaston Ramirez played the first half. 17/6: Tahiti v Nigeria, 8pm 20/6: Spain v Tahiti, 8pm 20/6: Nigeria v Uruguay, 11pm 23/6: Nigeria v Spain, 8pm 23/6; Uruguay v Tahiti, 11pm Semi Final 1: 26/6, 8pm Semi Final 2: 27/6, 8pm Third Place Playoff: 30/6, 5pm Final: 30/6, 8pm All matches are on BBC 3 or BBC 1 for some of the later kick offs. Restark19 Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 Brazil V Japan tonight, hope to see Maya have an outstanding game
Whitey Grandad Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 I assume those dates should all be June and not July?
Colinjb Posted 15 June, 2013 Author Posted 15 June, 2013 I assume those dates should all be June and not July? Yeah, getting a little ahead of myself there!
fish fingers Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 Apparently Tahiti lost a warm up match to Chile U-21's 7-0
Colinjb Posted 15 June, 2013 Author Posted 15 June, 2013 Sepp Blatter certainly got a hostile reception from the home fans.
JackFrost Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 We've got Gaston Ramirez and Maya Yoshida playing for Uruguay and Japan respectively. Yoshida has just started for Japan against Brazil it's live on BBC3 now. Brazil 1-0 up after 3 mins - Neymar with a 20 yard volley.
JackFrost Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 Sorry just noticed the thread in the general sports section
Colinjb Posted 15 June, 2013 Author Posted 15 June, 2013 Yoshida starts for Japan. Was helpless for Neymar's stunning opening goal after 3 minutes though.
View From The Top Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 Neymar's goal was a bit good. Sent from my GT-P3110 using Tapatalk 2
Colinjb Posted 15 June, 2013 Author Posted 15 June, 2013 Yoshida is working hard, has intercepted/shepherded Neymar a couple of times.
Saint Garrett Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 Yoshi has had a decent first half from what Ive seen.
Saint Garrett Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 I know we have been linked with Kiyotake - not been impressed so far.
SuperSAINT Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 I know we have been linked with Kiyotake - not been impressed so far. Where's he playing? Wing?
Smirking_Saint Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 I know we have been linked with Kiyotake - not been impressed so far. TBF brazil havnt let them have much of the ball yet
itchen_dan Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 Honda has looked very good! 27, free agent, got to be worth a 5 yr contract. Top top player.
Super_Saint Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 Honda has looked very good! 27, free agent, got to be worth a 5 yr contract. Top top player. I was just about to post this. There will be bigger clubs going for him no doubt, but surely worth a go. Maybe Cortese can work his magic!
Olallana Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 Honda is free agent from dec 31. (Contracts in Russia runs that way) Probably cheap though this summer for anyone that want to pick him up. Probably max £5m.

Think he wants to play in PL, would fit in with our other Japanese imports, and would be perfect financially and big on the marketing scale.
Saint Garrett Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 Would definitely have Honda, didn't realise he was at the end of his contract.
Lighthouse Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 Boring, pedantic post alert - 'Yoshida' looks way better on the back of a shirt than 'Maya'. Not a fan of having first names and nicknames on the back. Same with 'Gaston' Ramirez.
Colinjb Posted 15 June, 2013 Author Posted 15 June, 2013 I swear Yoshida has managed to pick out more passes in this game then he did throughout the whole of last season! His distribution has been outstanding.
S-Clarke Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 I swear Yoshida has managed to pick out more passes in this game then he did throughout the whole of last season! His distribution has been outstanding. That's exactly what I thought...I swear he's never distributed the ball as well for us, as he has tonight! I think he's had a pretty good game to be honest. Looks very comfortable at that level

But, yes, Maya has looked utterly superb. He is utterly at home at this level of the game.
Colinjb Posted 15 June, 2013 Author Posted 15 June, 2013 A word for Uchida as well. Excellent at right back.
skintsaint Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 Sod the Japs, any Brazilians we can snatch?..I see that Paulinho scored again, he still playing in Brazil? Looked handy v England.
Smirking_Saint Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 Sod the Japs, any Brazilians we can snatch?..I see that Paulinho scored again, he still playing in Brazil? Looked handy v England. Prob spurs bound. In all honesty though the japs were poor, Brazil look a shadow of the team that won the WC in 02. Definately missing a solid frontman since Pato nosedived. And they definately dont seem so strong in DM.
Colinjb Posted 15 June, 2013 Author Posted 15 June, 2013 3-0 Jo of all people scored it on the counter attack. Sadly, Maya was caught sleeping for it, Jo just ran past him.
Lighthouse Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 3-0 Jo of all people scored it on the counter attack. Sadly, Maya was caught sleeping for it, Jo just ran past him. True but bare in mind Yoshida had played 90 minutes against one of the best attacking teams in the world in their own back yard. He had a tough game, the game was lost and he was probably knackered. Jo had fresh legs, a point to prove and was fighting for a place in the squad. Yoshi's positioning and movement was okay, Jo just had an extra yard of pace on him.
Professor Posted 15 June, 2013 Posted 15 June, 2013 Watched the game and listened to the biased pro-Brazil commentary. The viewers heard that Oscar plays for Chelsea and that a Liverpool player hadn't been selected. Heard no mention of Yoshida being a Saints' player. Usual TV approach of assuming the viewers are only interested in a few teams.

Heard a few mentions of Yoshida, Southampton, and that he had a pretty good first debut season in the PL etc.

We were the only prem team to have signed someone yesterday, yet they stay go on and on and on talking about the same 4-5 clubs
Window Cleaner Posted 16 June, 2013 Posted 16 June, 2013 (edited) 3-0 Jo of all people scored it on the counter attack. Sadly, Maya was caught sleeping for it, Jo just ran past him. didn't matter anyway. Whole thing looks like a bit of a chore to the Japanese, they've qualified for the WC already, don't think they're interested overmuch in the CC. Think they've only got 2 Japan based played in their squad, all the rest play in Europe and look ****ged out, Japan one day, Jordan a few days later then Brazil, whereas Brazil they've played 2 home friendlies. Japan didn't look any worse than the French against Brazil, in fact probably a bit better. Edited 16 June, 2013 by Window Cleaner
Wiggles31 Posted 16 June, 2013 Posted 16 June, 2013 Is Spain v U Rgay on tv tonight? Hopefully Gaston is fit.

Dr Who? Posted 16 June, 2013 Posted 16 June, 2013 Looking forward to the Brazil v Spain final..... Maybe! Looks a pretty tasty tournament to be fair.
Batman Posted 16 June, 2013 Posted 16 June, 2013 Italy are very good to watch. Technically brilliant as usual
Colinjb Posted 16 June, 2013 Author Posted 16 June, 2013 Stunning free kick from Andrea Pirlo. Italy 1-0 Mexico
Colinjb Posted 16 June, 2013 Author Posted 16 June, 2013 1-1 Hernandez penalty Really scrappy defending.
Turkish Posted 16 June, 2013 Posted 16 June, 2013 Really scrappy defending. Just as well we didn't sign that itie. If he can't get in ahead ahead of those clowns he must be useless.
trousers Posted 16 June, 2013 Posted 16 June, 2013 @SouthamptonFC: Gaston Ramirez named in the Uruguay starting XI for their #Confeds Group B game against Spain. Kick off in Recife is at 11pm BST. #saintsfc

Smirking_Saint Posted 16 June, 2013 Posted 16 June, 2013 This will be a good game, Uraguay are a bigger team these days and certainly stronger then they have been in recent history. Going forward they are very good, defensively not so much
Jonnyboy Posted 16 June, 2013 Posted 16 June, 2013 What exactly is the CC? How do these teams end up being involved?
