i think this statement, ends all credibility that article might have

"The Daily Echo, a trusted Southampton news source, claims Cortese is ready to spend big with a rumoured £100 million pound war chest to help aid this push for the Champions League."

100 million ? yeah right 40 at the most, then again rule of 3 , regular as gravity.

Anyone can write for that site. I could get an article entitled published saying "Saints look to offload Shaw and Ramirez in a desperate attempt to stay afloat as they hunt for bargains amongst championship reserves". Doesn't make it any more accurate.

On another note Cortese looks impressive in that picture. Sharp suit, neatly cut hair and expression that says "i mean business" He surely is one of the best dressed and most impressive chairman in the country from that point of view.

We proved last season that we're good enough to compete with the top 4. However, we also showed that we're not good enough to consistently beat those in the bottom half.

Change that and we'll be some way towards that dream.

strange that Paine and the old codger next to him are looking to their right but Cortese is looking rather straight ahead. Perhaps he sees the game with expanded vision.

Wouldn't even work. We can't buy 3 or 4 players of 25-30m as that sort of quality wouldn't come here. That's what would be needed. We could spend 100m on inflated prices or lots of players, but signing loads of players rarely works out well for anyone.

3 or 4 quality players of 7-15m though is possible and sensible. Top 4? No chance, but more improvement and 7th/8th? Why not.

Still think we can come close by improving at both ends. Few more scored, few less conceded and we can move up a good few places. After that it depends on factors that we can't control like Arsenal's recruitment. Citeh,Chelsea will be top 2, Utd should be but Moyes isn't SAF so there may be ripples in the force there. Leaves one place and about 10 candidates, logically it's for Arse or Spurs but if they should lose Bale Spurs may be totally wiped out. Leaves Arsenal, good side but they're always fragile at some stage of the season or other, desperate for a really solid DM and we can at least deny them the one that we have.

We would do well to crack top ten next season and the idea of top 4 is farcical.

So who out of Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal are going to dislodge????

Well 3 of them have new managers so in a transition period and Arsenal have been in decline for years. Top 4 is there for the takingIMO

well, arsenal are the worst team in the top 4 currently. They have a rumoured £75m to spend on players like Higuain to add to an already brilliant squad

throw in chelsea about to spend stupid money (again) and man city

lets just say that a top 8 finish would be brilliant

A finished 8th when Lowe was here and we had no investment!

never know, might be another Aquiliani around for them to buy. Liverpool's record for wasting money on players who don't adapt is legion.

I doubt that'll happen under Rodgers, he's an excellent manager who won't be spunking money on the likes of Andy Carroll.

I think Arsenal will be better this year, as will Chelsea and Man City. spurs will do all they can to get in there and avoid losing Bale. That top 5 will be well above the next few teams. I'd say Liverpool have about a 5% chance of top 4, so Christ knows what our chance is.

If Everton slip then we can get 7th. 8th could have happened this season with a better start, we're not far off that. But we could spend a lot of money and play a lot better for quite small gains up the table really. It's a tough one but I have no idea how you go from 8th-4th.

How long since anybody outside ManU ManC Ars Che Spurs finished top 4?

Add in L'pool and Everton and in the last 10 seasons has anybody beyond these seven clubs finished top 4?

It's a massive ask, we have to improve substantially while at the same time 4 of the biggest 7 teams in the country simultaneously regress.

It's not 'impossible' in the infinite future, but in any short to medium term it is virtually impossible.

As per the above - even if we did have £100m to spend we wouldn't be able to buy four 25m players, one they wouldn't come here, and two the wages would be impossible.

Top 4? Yeah why not.

It's always possible but we'd have to have one hell of a transfer season.

The trouble is that the best players are always going to be attracted to champs league teams + the top 4 are always going to have a huge pot of money to spend.

Top 8-10 plus a good cup run would be brilliant TBH.

The 2011/2012 season provides reason for some optimism. Spurs were 4th, Newcastle 5th and Chelsea 6th. Is there any particular reason that we couldn't do a Newcastle with the right signings?

There are many factors that come into play next season which could affect the top places. Ferguson has retired, although Moyes has proven his ability with Everton, it remains to be seen how United will fare under him, although it is unthinkable that they won't be top three. Tottenham are totally reliant on Bale for their position. Without his goals, they would have had 22 points fewer. Liverpool, although lower in the table, were very reliant on the goals from Suarez too. How will Everton fare without Moyes?

Although extremely unlikely that we could get into the top 4, 6/7th doesn't seem out of the question if we had a striker on fire and a tighter defence.

Ever since we were formed Southampton have had ambitions of being a top team. They came close at the turn of the 19th/ 20th century and again in the 1980's. As a one off in a good year a top 4 finish is just about credible but to be there consistantly - well maybe some time in the next 100 years.
