Toon Saint Posted 10 June, 2013 Share Posted 10 June, 2013 A bit of brouhaha breaking on twitter regarding Luke Shaw's latest tweeting activities, in which he supposedly 'accidentally' posted the @ManUtd_PO tag. This fella caught him out but Shaw claims it was merely his phone posting on his behalf while bobbling about in his pocket. Accident or not, (and I highly doubt the former), the guy needs to get a bit of a grip on his social media activities. I for one am a little fed up with his cryptic updates - unless he is that slow, he must be aware of the press interest they generate.

Toon Saint Posted 10 June, 2013 Author Share Posted 10 June, 2013 This isn't particularly cryptic... I was referring specifically to his twitter updates, which come across a little attention-seeking at times. He is hardly likely to use official Saints media channels to make covetous glances at other clubs is he? I'm sure he will stay this summer, but he is creating an unnecessary side-show. I realise he is young but maybe someone at the club should have a quiet word.

Nigel=God-Poyet=Sod Posted 10 June, 2013 Share Posted 10 June, 2013 Ah, the classic reductive 'don't follow him' reply which engages with precisely nothing. And the classic response ridiculing my response with the hope that your point of view will be somewhat more valid. It isn't. The lad is 17, and on holiday I believe, if you're embarrassed by what he tweets then simply don't read them. If you're so embarrassed about him as a player on twitter and fed up with his tweets, then it's very interesting that you decide to start a thread on a Saints forum moaning and complaining about it. Making a big issue of a tweet which he obviously sent accidentally is what I am fed up with. The simple answer is, don't read his tweets, because it seems you're in a minority amongst Saints fans who are particularly bothered about what a 17 year old player tweets, accidentally, whilst on holiday. OK so if I followed your line of logic my reply would be: 'if you don't like what I wrote then ignore it or don't reply'. That of course, is not constructive and just closes down discussion, which I thought forums like twitter (and hopefully Saintsweb) are supposed to facilitate. Believe me, I'm not overly concerned with his twitter account (I noticed this through the #saintsfc tag not through obsessively stalking his twitter account) but there is a definitely a broader point about the use of social media by players here, even if you do speak on behalf of the 'majority'. Obviously, twitter enables a great bridge between players and fans but there is a balance to be had. Shaw's recent replies to some inflammatory tweets about him sunning himself in Barbados while the U21's were getting battered by the ilk of Norway were, at best, ill-advised; at worst, immature. The fact that the DM have devoted columns to Shaw's professed love of Chelsea via twitter, would suggest that he needs to be more on his guard. FloatingbridgeSaint Posted 10 June, 2013 Share Posted 10 June, 2013 Now I see this, is does actually make some kind of sense & even more of a non story. Man Utd PO have tweeted asking followers who they would like to see signed this summer & it appears Luke has gone to reply at some point thus putting in the @manutd_PO at the start of the message to reply & either thought better of it or just didn't bother, puts phone in pocket, accidentally hits send & voila... On a slightly separate note - i thought Saints players had some form of social media code of conduct or indeed maybe just an of the field code of conduct so if this is the case then I reckon LS might be getting a tap on the shoulder at some point... Saintandy666 Posted 10 June, 2013 Share Posted 10 June, 2013 Tbh, it could be a joke (or most likely just pocket phone). A sign of immaturity if it is a joke. I was behind the Saints youth team in the queue of Nandos in Southampton (last year I believe), and Luke Shaw was there with the rest of the youth team of the time, and they all did seem a bit arrogant. But tbh, what footballing teenager wouldn't be a bit arrogant at that age? Also, some arrogance is probably quite good for the top sportsman. The key is reigning it in when he hits the big time. We're fortunate he does use twitter, pretty much all the players who were on it a few years back have stopped using it completely. (Cork, Hooiveld, Puncheon, Lallana etc) Call me sad, but I used to enjoy seeing the players reactions on twitter when travelling back from away games and the messages where they'd mention the great support we'd given them. Yes, I know it was mostly a blowing smoke up our arses exercise but it raised a smile when you'd put the effort into going and still had a couple of hours travel to go. The fact that Shaw felt he needed to favourite the @talksaint tweet about him staying is just proof of how things can spiral. I don't think he has tweeted anything 'awful' just unnecessarily vague and cryptic - i.e. the 'confused' tweet after Adkins was sacked - which has on a few occasions now, prompted a load of nonsense and bed-wetting on twitter. alpine_saint Posted 11 June, 2013 Share Posted 11 June, 2013 Jesus. most of the top 4-6 clubs in England are interested in having him, and are willing to pay him top-notch moolah for his services. If we dont match that ambition, why shouldnt he leave ? Or at the least have a feeling of invincibility because of the interest. I used to get really incensed about this sort of stuff, now I shrug my shoulders in resignation when I read such stories. English football is obscene and peverse when it comes to finance. Clubs can either go-with-the-flow, get relegated, or muddle along hoping that somehow good organisation and management can make the difference. We are in the last category, and it was also, in fairness to him, what Lowe was trying to do (but wrecked by his egotism, control freakery and the fact that he wasnt a particulary good manager anyway). FWIW, Shaw is going to leave somewhen, sooner or later. It will be later if we are capable of competing this season.

Potentially the best left back in the Premier, already at 17 a regular in a good and wealthy Premier team run by Nicola Cortese who will wring a massive fee out of whoever really bites the bullet. £10m won't even buy a bit of him. I wish the big four all the best, enjoy your negotiations, either way it is win/win situation for the club.
