OldNick Posted 8 June, 2013 Share Posted 8 June, 2013 I seem to recall in the late 60's early 70's that there was talk of merging Saints and Pompey and setting up as Solent City. I was only about 9 and so can't recall the situation exactly. I can't see that it would have worked. But obviously some thought it would have worked

Fan The Flames Posted 8 June, 2013 Share Posted 8 June, 2013 Talk of it went on into the 80's, a merger with a new ground just off the motorway around Fareham. The problem was that Pompey were always in a lower division making a merger less attractive. I don't know how serious the talk was or how influential the talkers were. There was team in the New Forest League called Solent City in the 1980s. The beat us 10-3 at home and 8-1 away - they were a bit better.
Golden Balls Posted 8 June, 2013 Share Posted 8 June, 2013 There was a TyronLeague side called this too. Anyway, would never happen.

SOTONS EAST SIDE Posted 8 June, 2013 Share Posted 8 June, 2013 You also had the Solent Motel,Now Tesco Bursledon built on this possibility. I think.
SaintBobby Posted 9 June, 2013 Share Posted 9 June, 2013 I remember the Thames Valley Royals fiasco (under Robert Maxwell) and, I seem to recall, Fulham Park Rangers too. Solent City seems even more far fetched though!

pap Posted 9 June, 2013 Share Posted 9 June, 2013 Stadium seats would have to be Purple to keep everyone happy too Weirdly enough, that's the official colour of Liverpool City Council and hence, the colour of my attractive bin.
Trader Posted 9 June, 2013 Share Posted 9 June, 2013 Seem to remember there was talk years ago of 'filling in' the gap between Southampton and Portsmouth to create a massive conurbation to be called Solent City. The proposed football club was to be part of this. Glad it didn't happen - yet.
lloydie Posted 9 June, 2013 Share Posted 9 June, 2013 Can definately see the merging of the two cities, building the area between the two cities up along the M27 as both are increasing in population all the time. However the two football clubs joining, no chance!

Saint137 Posted 10 June, 2013 Share Posted 10 June, 2013 Yeah, it was expected in the late 60s that a south coast conurbation would emerge - the M27 project was part of this. Remember doing this in Geography at school c.1985. Green belt regs intervened thank god
