It's just more chewing gum for the ears for the gullible down the eastern end of the M27.

Bransgrove is desperate to regain some support from the p****y area as Hampshire followers effectively boycotted the club when they stopped playing at Burnaby Road and memberships have dropped off at Bompey and pompey since Hampshire pulled out .

I can't say I blame them too much for that, to be honest, what do they get for their £150 standard Hampshire membership since Hampshire stopped playing down there.

But rather than give a sensible reason - ie, it's not worth paying £150 for a membership of a club that can't even be bothered to play in the city, they dress it up as an anti-Southampton thing.

Don't worry, Rod will be a Bompey supporter next year if he thinks it sells tickets.

An interesting attempt at playing the populist card and possibly misjudging the feelings of the target audience mostly located to the west of the Rose Bowl...

Of course he is unhappy, all of the traditional old boys network are unhappy.

As a summary, this. Not a bad thing either, although the whole MLT issue is sad, but otherwise its nice to see those who fed off the club going hungry.

Can't help but feel he'll lose more supporters from Southampton on the doorstep than he'll gain from Pompey with that stance.

They've committed to making the current ground 'the best in cricket' so I can't see them moving back down that way either.

Yep. The local "business community" enjoyed a lot of access and freebies (directors box invites etc) in the Askham and Lowe years. NC has slammed the door shut on those and funnily enough they don't like him.

Total idiot. There's lots of saints fans follow Hampshire cricket. Attacking SFC and praising PFC in the same article will disaffect hants from a strong part of its support base, and that will hit them in the pocket.

Yep, funny that.

It is a shame that some of our former players are not on good terms with the current custodians but the business community did not step in for the club when it was on it's knees, they just took it for granted. They did more harm then good.

This could be a real 'Ratners' moment for Bransgrove. Alienate the community you inhabit? Bravo.

How much did Bransgrove feed off Saints?

Maybe his stance wasn't aimed at bringing in new supporters, just an off-the-cuff, misjudged personal opinion of his own?

Can he even mention the way we treat our own though, after Pompey shafted their own staff, players, and local suppliers for millions in compromise agreements the way they did?

After all, Kanu was a legend for them, winning the FA Cup, and then he wanted paying for it, and they turned on him pretty sharply...

Which is worse, Bransgrove? Putting the noses out of joint of a few ex-players/managers when they can't have any more freebies, or shafting charities, local businesses and the taxman?

If you wish to toady up to the Skates and alienate the Saints, then carry on opening your big mouth and putting your foot deep inside it.

If you read my post, I said his opinion was misjudged. My point was that I doubt it is part of some great thought-out scheme to attract skates to Hants, p**s off Saints fans, more likely its just an ill-judged, off the cuff comment.

Lawrie Mac didn't seem very ostracised to me when he was outside SMS before the Stoke game signing autographs and posing for pics (even one with me) for over half an hour. It was great to see a lot of kids who probably did not even know who he was talking to him, and it was great that he had so much time for everyone, hope his missus was not too upset.

Hampshire cricket bloke can go do one in my opinion, irrelevant to Saints.

Meh, wasn't trying to imply he was, just pointing out the probable consequence of what he was saying.

Whichever way you look at it, it was an idiotic thing for him to say.

What the issue is the free ride they got came to an end and the free boxes, tickets, meals stopped and now he actually has to pay like a proper fan... Sour grapes yawn

I'm sorry but what does Portsmouth have to do with Hampshire?

The same amount as Southampton does, in terms of political geography.

I was going to take 6 people to a 20-20 game, I don't think I want to help him fund the Skates thanks very much. I will take them to Somerset instead

Where has he said he's going to fund the skates? I can't see that in the Echo article.

Who cares what he said/does? Bear in mind this is the guy who built a lovely stadium (having been gifted the land) that is way too big for the catchment support and needs the local Council to pay for a hotel to help pay day to day costs.

Storm in a teacup and not newsworthy in the slightest IMO.

What has he actually said that's so outrageous? I imagine a majority of our fans agree with what he said regarding Le Tiss et al. He doesn't mention anything about establishing 'links' with Pompey, just merely expresses admiration for their fans trust taking over.

Posted

To be fair to Bransgrove, he moved Hampshire Cricket out to the Rosebowl & has clearly put in a lot of effort to develop the club. He has shown the commitment, desire & vision to attract England games & break the hold of the usual County grounds to stage Internationals and I like the fact we now have the opportunity to watch International games in our home town. On the matter of the treatment of the likes of Lawrie, Benali & Le Tis, I reckon you'd struggle to find anyone who is truly happy with how they've been treated, but to throw your cards in with pompey is not the smartest thing to do.

Exactly right. That doesn't make for a good thread though.

Imagine it was a throwaway comment that the Echo have pounced on however still not a clever thing to say at all. Had thought relations were pretty good with Saints/Hampshire with their annual quiz night etc.?

Agree, if you leave aside the skates reference, he is correct.

Probably has the support of many Saints fans when saying we are losing sight of our history and tradition.

Classic OldNick garbage there.

He's funding the Skates! He's funding the Skates!

In other news, no he isn't.

If nothing else it's now guaranteed him wonderful coverage on Meridian, Dinenage will be all over him like a rash.

"But we are looking at things like crossovers between season tickets and membership.

‘And there are a few other things in the pipeline, which I can’t comment on at the moment.’

Bransgrove, a Spurs fan from his youth..."

Wasn't that property developer that put the money up for the skates recently a spurs fan...Portsea Hotspurs anyone?

Rod during his recent visit to FP

Oh dear what a non story! I spoke to Rod at the end of the Lancashire 40 over win about Saints because he used to occupy the box "Ex Directors" with a number of other high profile individuals. he told me then he had not been for a while and was losing interest in Saints because of the way his friend Benali was treated. He said he was more akin to Portsmouth because that was now a club who would look after their heritage.

He is close to Le Tissier and Benali so it is understandable he is upset. At Hampshire we have a good cross section of Southampton and Portsmouth season ticket holders and there is a lot of good humoured banter. Rod would not be making this comment to try to gain anything. I am sure it would have been a comment made after an enquiry about Saints, just as I did.

Rod is a Spurs supporter by the way.

Agree just mischief making by a small section of our fans.I think rods done a great job at Hampshire and the rose bowl is a fantastic ground.

That is exactly what he meant by the comments! He is a close friend of MLT and Benali, and shares their frustrations with the current 'regime'. I'm sure it was just a throwaway comment, and not about getting new members from the East!

Well, that's not how this article has interpreted it...

http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/cricket/cricket-chief-wants-to-join-forces-with-pompey-1-5161966

Rod Bransgrove wants Hampshire Cricket Club and Pompey to join forces. The Hampshire chairman was in contact with the board members of the Pompey Supporters’ Trust throughout their takeover of the club.

He was later invited to Fratton Park as a guest of Blues chairman Iain McInnes for the final home game of last season against Sheffield United.

That convinced Bransgrove to stump up for his own share in the club.
