Delegates in the Barclays Premier League also assess the behaviour of fans at matches with points being awarded for positive verbal support and recognition of outstanding play by the opposition, as well as respect for match officials and opposing fans.

For the second season running, the award for the best fans has gone to Norwich City, who will receive £20,000 from the FA Charity Committee.

Norwich finished above Southampton, who were second, and Reading, Everton and Fulham, who were joint-third.

yet another runners up award for us and falling short again. One for the last 3 season Cortese has been here. he's going to get the nickname ""2 place Nicky" if he doesn't sort it out.

I have no objections to being runner up in the Premiership next year :)

What a sh*t thing to win. It's basically a table of who has the most boring fans. Congratulations......

the very fact Reading's name is listed shows what an absolute waste of time that is.

Some of the usual post hijackers sending out their keyboard negativity. No doubt the same individuals would revel in a second place for being the hardest crew.

I'd be appalled if that was the case. This, however, is a feeble happy-clapping glad-handing award entirely worthy of massive mockery. With the exception of having a decently high ST turnout, Norwich fans are of no note whatsoever, and frankly nor are we.

I'm all in favour of us being "good fans" and being supportive of the team and imaginative with chants and that kind of stuff, but I retain every right to rip the p155 out of anyone giving out awards for it, FFS.

Crouch's goal was a good header the other week. I commented on how technically good it was and made a point in clapping it to show my appreciation. Very good turnout from those Stoke fans. I clapped them back onto their coaches and personally thanked them all for making the journey and giving our Southampton boys a jolly good game of football. I made sure I waited clapped the officials off the pitch too, and I waited for the ref outside the ground to shake his hand for allowing us to have such a great game of football. What a fantastic award. I'm so glad that St Mary's is a welcoming place for all football fans alike. The Southampton way.

How embarrassing. I'm fully ashamed of the "fans" who got us this award. Bloody shutters, clapping and singing and basically carry on like homosexuals. What happened to a bit of harmless racist chanting and pre/mid/post match mindless violence? People need to man up. If this sort of thing carries on there'll be no one left at games other than bloody women!

Nice piece of derisive sarcasm. Doesn't persuade me, though.

This

But not this, as a few people have already noted. There's quite a big gap between being a spamheaded hoolie wannabe and the sort of happy sappiness this award seems to be using as the criteria for "best fans".

Jesus. I'm trying to imagine how sh1t Carrow Road's atmosphere must be....

I have a friend who chose to watch the match at Carrow Road from his hotel room overlooking the pitch rather than the away end, that must have some relevance... though it was raining quite a lot.

It may not mean much to some of the posters on here, but im sure it does no harm when NC's trying to get blue chip companies to sponsor stuff or become involved. It also helps when discussing stuff with the council, police and maybe the football authorities. I'm sure the ml trust also appricate their fathers legacy being built in a decent , friendly environment. I maybe old fashioned but I don't think there's too much wrong with this.

funny how so many were up in arms that we were the joke of football and no longer a family club. We get an award for being so and that is not any good either, lol. I think we should get some Millwall fans in, that would show them.

If the Skates won this Factless would be all over it, quotes from Thierry etc

My thoughts exactly. If they got anywhere near the top in this we'd be hearing about it for the next decade or two.

Michael Owen said we have amazing fans. I'm keeping that one.

I'd say good sportsmanship is a marker for ones level of intelligence, shows foresight and an ability to realise 'what comes around, goes around'. It's a traditionally British notion. Innit?

Traditionally British but not very 'football fan', I'd say

Very true. Whether some people like it or not, anything that encourages positive perceptions of the club can only help in the long run. I'd rather we had the reputation as a decent, friendly club rather than, say, that of Milwall - regardless of whether the reputation is deserved. I doubt many fans give a toss about this award but other people just might...

I'm like you, really glad St Marys is a welcoming place. Hopefully the "Southamtpon way" will continue for many many years to come, and will eventually drive all the stone island, p*ssed up bellends away. They can find another sport to release a weeks worth of pent up aggression, and we won't have to witness it.

Good on you Griffo! a really refreshing post.

To be fair, though, that is an inaccurate interpretation. The award is based on a combined evaluation of the behaviour of players, team officials and fans.

For players:

•red and yellow cards

•positive play (e.g. showing attacking intent, speeding up the game, no time-wasting)

•respect towards opponents

•respect towards the referee

Team Officials:

•respect towards opponents

•respect towards the referee

Fans:

- positive verbal support

- recognition of outstanding play by the opposition

- respect for match officials

- respect for opposing fans

What seems to be at the crux of many fans' opinion on this is what I would describe as a conflict between individual behaviour and a kind of mob-mentality tribalism. Many supporters revel in a permanent state of hostility and agression against the opposition (and even towards elements of their own support base). And this hostility can reveal itself in very ugly behaviour. A significant portion of football fans think this kind of behaviour is an essential part of football culture (regardless of the fact that they will, on occasion, admit a grudging respect for certain clubs, or certain club's supporters). And they reinforce that view by ridiculing elements of the fan-base, with epithets like "prawn-sandwich brigade", "middle-class fans", and "happy-clappers".

But it is possible to be a loyal and passionate fan without endorsing a never-ending sense of hatred and pent-up violence against the opposition. And this is where the individual conscience is at odds with the mob-mentality. Some things that football crowds do I disagree with; and I would never engage in them - I don't do things just to go along with the crowd. A mob can be a very ugly thing.

Respect to the refs? must have not have heard the weekly 'we always get sh*t refs' chants then?

Basically what this award is saying is that we're not remotely intimidating to refs. I imagine the teams at the bottom of the list are the likes of Stoke etc... the grounds generally regarded as having a decent atmosphere.

The influx of Japanese fans has definitely helped with this award.

If there was an award for 'Ground with most Sign w*nkers' we would still come 2nd behind Chelsea.

As depressing as these awards are, I can take comfort in the fact that at least there is one team out there worse than us.
