If you were on the transfer committee...

Firstly, apologies as I know there are similar threads already. However, for those who enjoy the excitement of transfer season, I thought I'd propose a scenario. If you were given a position on transfer committee and the following remit from Don Cortese, what would you come up with:

5 players in.

£55m maximum spend;

1 valued at £15m+ (max 25ish)

1 valued between £10m-15m

2 valued between £5m-10m

1 free transfer

Clearly those figures are optimistic on our spending, however in my opinion, thats the most I could see us realistically forking out this summer. What positions would you weight our spending towards and who would you go for?

Easy ;)

Lamela £20m

Nainggolan £15m

Astori £10m

Osvaldo £8m

Cant really find any free I really want, with these signings we dont need Verdu.

Maybe Casado or Figueroa for left back...

Of course I would sell some players and perhaps get in Gamez for £4m and Mugni for £3m, but that´s breaking OP´s rules I guess :)

Rodrigo (Benfica) - £15m

Angelo Ogbonna (Torino) - £12m

Will Hughes (Derby) - £7m

Will Buckley (Brighton) - £5m

Maynor Figueroa (Former Wigan) - Free

I'd be ecstatic with that!

Will Hughes looks a very good player, apparently Derby want upwards of £10m for him though,

Only a Top 4 team will pay that for him, and that's not where he needs to go. Real shame to see young talent going to a big club and not playing. Owes it to himself to look at joining a smaller team and to play regularly while he's still improving as a player.

If not Will Hughes then Sean Murray from Watford would do a job.

Well that rules us out then since we're HUGE and we're going to be champions league, if not champions, next season. At least that's what people here have said.

I thought we were the transfer committee.

However, I dont think we should be looking at pure financial value, there should be a number of factors, such as ability, age, willingness to sign up to the 'project' (although they'll all say they are) and price

This is third or fourth hand so no idea how true this is, but serious targets are apparently investigated thoroughly. Not just the Strachan stuff of lifestyle etc., but personality and psychometric profiling and all that sort of stuff. The way it was explained, was that this was to a level far more in depth than any other teams. No idea if it isn't more than pub talk, but it sounded good.

They really haven't.

Maybe you are reading a different forum.

Anyway.... Back on topic as this is clearly a bit of fun.

1 valued at £15m+ : Jackson Martinez I reckon is class and will be the next one leaving Porto

1 valued between £10m-15m: I'd say Nainggolan

2 valued between £5m-10m: Buckley and Astori

Free transfer: another goalkeeper? If a decent one is on a free transfer.

But that said we'd still need to get some full backs in too!

Really we have £110 Million to spend, awesome.....................................

Yep. OP decides subject in the thread shocker....

And btw, how do you figure out your numbers?

If a player cost £15m then automatically his wage will be £15m??

For the people including Astori, Naiggolan, Buckley, Lamela etc, are you just including them because we have been linked or have you actually seem them play and know that they would be a good addition and good value for money? Bearing in mind the purpose of the thread is to come up with YOUR ideal signings within the transfer budget.

I remember back in 2002 we were heavily linked with a striker called Marcus Allback. He had a decent record in the Swedish and Dutch leagues, however hardly anyone had heard of him. all summer people banged on and on and on about how we had to sign him, he was brilliant despite no one every having seen him play. HE went to Villa and was absolute dogsh*t.

For me it´s because I´ve seen them, except for Buckley which on the other hand I´ve not included.

Watch a lot of Serie A and though I think Lamela is out of reach it wouldn´t surprise me if Cortese goes after him. Fits the description of what we want perfectly and with Poch now it can be real perhaps.

Astori is a national team CB for Italy, says it all but he is also a great player in my view. A bit unpolished at times but a perfect CB for our system.

Nainggolan is a beast, to be able to rotate with Spider and Cork, then we will be truely solid at CM position...

Agree with Rodrigo, a fantastic little player from what I've seen of him at Benfica. Is also the exact sort of player we should be looking at, someone who can play wide and up front, has pace and will run at people. However doubt he will go to us, much more likely to move to a Spanish team to get into the national team, plus he already has champions league football at Benfica.

Do we need Will Hughes? Do we not have an 18 year old attacking midfielder who has already showed promising signs in the premiership?

Easy ;)

Have to question spending that amount on Naingollan, very good player but centre-mid is probably our strongest area. I reckon Astori will cost close to £15 million as well. Osvaldo for £8 million would be robbery as well.

Fair enough.

It's just interesting that the OP asked what you would do if in charge of transfers and for the most part, people would be interested in the same players our transfer committee is supposedly interested in. Good synergy between fans and the transfer committee it seems : )

Agree to some extent about Nainggolan but for me the most important position in our system will be CM and one injury to Spider or Cork and I think we are too weak in that position. And to play this system as CM for 38 games is near impossible so extremely important to be strong in this position. I dont think Ward-Prowse is ready yet and Davis might cover for a few games but not in the long run. I think MP really like Ward-Prowse but that he will be used very much as a tactical sub rather than a starter, like when he came on against Man C at home to nullify Kolarov down the flank.

I think Astori will be maximum £12m but he might also have a deal with Cagliari that it wont raise that much due to him staying with the club in january when they were in trouble and looked like they might go down from Serie A.

Osvaldo for that would be a steal but I saw that figure mentioned the other week and he´s done himself very unpopular at Roma so I think they might offload him under £10m.

And of course, with Corteses negotiation skills you never know ;)

Haha, true......but as I said, watching a lot of Serie A makes you aware and if the name pops up in rumours to the club it´s perhaps easy to choose those in questions like this.

And of course, it gives me more chance to be right about the names in the end and we all know that THAT is the most important thing on a internet forum ;)

Could think of some others though, Dybala and Ilicic from Palermo. Cerci from Torino. Bonaventura from Atalanta.

I'll go for a non-linked or non serie A list

Striker - Negredo £15 million or Hooper £8 million or Vela £12 million

AM/Winger - Rodrigo £12 million, Hiroshi Kiyotake, £8 million, Kevin De Bruyne £7 million.

Defensive Mid - Koke £10 million, Lars Bendner £15 million

Centre-Back - Sokratis £8 million or Iñigo Martínez £6 million

Mine based purely on a belief that these could in this hypothetical world be possible.

1 valued at £15m+ (max 25ish) - Artur Vidal - Juventus - CM

1 valued between £10m-15m - Gonzalo Castro - Bayer Leverkusen -Everywhere

2 valued between £5m-10m - Mehdi Benatia Udinese - CB, Juan Cuadrado - Fiorentina - RW

1 free transfer - Fagner from Wolfsburg purely for the Lols.
