Crane Climb In Southampton

This is such a tragic example of how far entertainment has fallen. Its in the same category as Jackass and Dirty Sanchez; a freakshow where someone completely talentless does something extraordinarily stupid (that literally anyone else could do if they wanted to) for attention, and the public gawp at him.

Words can't express how unimpressed I am.

Hardly the same at all but many of the guys in those shows were also professional extreme sports stars, skateboarding in particular. It displays a level of commitment and ability far beyond anything any average person could ever attain.

The talent-less comment also IMO doesn't reflect the level of physical ability James has developed over a number of years. This guy has developed an elite level of physical ability far in excess of the average person.

for attention, and the public gawp at him.

I don't think he started out doing it for attention. From what I gether he failed at school and had no direction or purpose in his life. He never found something that grabbed him academically. There are a lot of people out there whom this is a real issue for. We can't all find a path straight away in our teens. James developed an interest in Parkour, and combined it with his interest in film and photography and discovered through YouTube that other people were also into the same thing and liked what he was doing. The fact that he is now developing a career out of being a professional extreme sports star is fantastic and I congratulate him for finding something he enjoys.

I can't endorse what James does nor would I like my son doing anything like this. But this guys story got me excited at the possibilities out there. I'm almost 40 now and life is pretty much mapped out for me from here on in. I bought a ticket on the rat race express and am consumed by work, bills, ISA's and trying to pay off my mortgage. For a few minutes I dream't I was as free as James. Then I remembered I hate heights so got back on with my work... :)

Anyway, as I say, the interest in him increases and so does his marketability it seems as he has other deals and endorsements coming in all the time:

I just find it depressing that someone can value their life so little. His mother looks like a complete idiot as well, making out she couldn't force him to go to school etc. she's probably to blame.

Like he said in the doc. What is living? He feels alive doing this.

This is Parkour/Free-running. Its impressive, looks fantastic, requires athleticism and I certainly can't do it myself.

Hanging from a crane is something I, and most other people can absolutely do; but choose not to. This is the equivalent of the kid in the school playground who eats worms.

As for this James fella being free? He's risking his life in the hope that people will watch and give him money. Sure. sounds like wonderful freedom.

Just watched it.

This exactly.

How long before we sadly read of his demise?

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

For good evolutionary reasons some degree of risk taking is a perfectly normal behavior in young men of course, but going quite this far is obviously highly abnormal.

Although it very easy to condemn him for the shear stupidity and crass thoughtlessness of his actions, I must admit part of me can't help but admire his manifest ability to conquer fear. With the possible exception of the odd spot of 'traffic light Grand Prix' unlike young James I've lead my life avoiding risk wherever possible, I've never even smoked a single cigarette for instance. Based on that lifetime of tedious 'better safe than sorry' experience I have to tell you now that not enough risk taking can be just as (if not more) damaging to the Human personality than too much is.

This programme made great TV though.
