Ramirez, his first season, how good has he been?

Barry Sanchez

Recommended Posts

I'll give him a 3/10 for his first season, his movement or lack of it has let him down and for a player who is playing in this League an average playing time before being substituted of 70 mins approx (all tactical reasons taken into acount) is not good enough, he seems happy playing but when things are not going his way appears to lose heart and becomes disinterested, must improve but will he?

What's your rating of our record signing?

Shown flashes of ability which has just made it more frustrating when he has had an off day. Perfectly typified with his performance against West Brom, really made a positive impact when he came on, looked to take the game by the scruff of the neck..... and then got stupidly sent off.

He needs to hit the ground running next year to really show his worth, he has the talent. Time to show it.

He's been a bit of a flat track bully. Excellent in games when we've dominated posession like Villa and Newcastle but struggled in game when we haven't. Personally i expected more from him and be one that can create something from nothing or grab the game by the scruff of the neck. I dont think it helps him that we have a lack of pace throughout the side, i've noticed on several occasions during games he put slide rule passes through with Lambert and Lallana both lacking the pace to get on the end of them, which if they had would have led to a good chance on goal/

6/10, clear potential for all to see, just seems to be made of glass a bit/isn't really ready for 90 mins in the English leagues (much like Morg was along with a host of other players who have made this sort of Europe to England transition).

You can see when he's on it and everyone is paying attention/knows whats coming he'll be an essential part of the team (I keep thinking of that goal he should have scored form Lambert's amazing through ball away at Norwich as just one example of the sort of thing that will start to happen more).

Give him a good summer with everyone else and it'll come good.

6/10. Excellent in some games, poor in others. Clearly has fantastic technique (as shown by his finish vs WHU for example, when he just wrapped his foot around the ball after shaping to put it to the keeper's right), and that bodes well. Sounds like a cliche, but he will benefit from a settled pre-season and I suspect he might just be one of our best performers next season. It is hardly rare for a young South American to struggle to hit his best form in his first months in a strange new country, and I've seen enough to suggest he could be a very fine player for us. I think he'll score 8+ next season, and be a much more consistent performer.

My biggest concern with him has been his complete inability at times to do the simple stuff. In all of the games I saw him play in this season, I don't recall him ever putting in a decent corner or free kick, with most of them either failing to get past the first defender or blazing hopelessly high and wide. That has absolutely nothing to do with adjusting to life in a new country or adapting to the pace of the PL, or whatever other excuses people have made for him this year; it's about him either being lazy or just not good enough.

I don't doubt he has talent in some areas, and he clearly does have an eye for a decent through-ball, but his execution has been far too pedestrian most of the time and that is what he will need to improve on if we are ever to see the player we hoped we were getting.

4/10 for me.

6/10. Decent first season, but inconsistent. His goal vs QPR was absolutely superb. Hope to see a lot more of him next season, with a good pre season under Pochettino. Brings excitement and gets people off their seats. Hopefully he can become a bit more consistent and do the easy things along with the class that he brings. Would love to see him with a quick striker ahead of him.

This is an example of wanting someone to do well as opposed to someone actually doing well, delusion over reality, was his goal against QPR absolutely superb? Was it really? What awards did it win? Goal of the week even? I dont know as it hardly sticks in the memory or a Le Tissier against Blackburn/Newcastle, it will be interesting if he actually scores a "Worldy" as his fans will explode with excitement, a classic case of style over substance or infact maybe not that even.

Ramirez is a clear 6/10. When he picked up that dead leg and was out for a month it was a big loss because his early form was excellent.

Overall 5 goals in 20 starts for a midfielder is decent.

A full preseason and knowing the demands of the Prem should see him kick on next season.

Hugely disappointing. Has talent, but not up to the rigours of the English game. Did he complete a single game ? Not worth the 12m and time and effort it took to secure his services. Sell over the summer.

You'd need to have seen him to appreciate his qualities.

Really, 5 goals for an attacking midfielder? He has made 24 appearances and scored 5, Puncheon is a winger and has scored 6.

I agree, when not on camera his sells hot dogs and does a great rendition of Iron Maidens bring your daughter to the slaughter, as soon as he is back in shot he is doing nothing and wandering around lost, he is better off camera.......................

Given that our main tactic this season has involved our central striker dropping deep and the wide midfielders pushing into the forward positions, that's not really surprising.

I'd give Ramirez a 6/10, flashes of greatness, mostly solid performances but not really suited to our current style, not enough of a ball-winner for the pressing style and without a central player to put through balls to, most of his vision goes to waste. Harder-working and more defensive that plenty are giving him credit for though, and definitely has the right attitude. Needs to stop trying to deliver all of his set pieces with whip and dip and spin and pace and just make sure they end up in the penalty area.

Liverpool got rid of Andy Carroll el pronto?

Not sure why they signed him in the first place and brought in a manager with a completely different perspective on how the game should be played which was clearly at odds with his skillset. Pochettino has already shown he's happy to start Gaston at home regularly even when his form isn't great.

Showed flashes of brilliance but had far more poor/average games than good/great games. The 'Oh Gaston Ramirez' chant soon became annoying too when he did little to justify us singing his name so much, particularly when other players consistently performed better than him yet still receive no such praise or encouragement.

5/10 maybe 5.5 due to the start stop nature of his season.

Good in some games, tried to hard in some others and missing in some others.

5 goals and 3 assists in 20 starts is not that bad.

BTW Coutinho gets a 7, he's not been as good as some people make out.

He played a full season with Bologna, went straight to The Olympics last summer, almost straight back into the season with Bologna. He therefore had no pre-season with us, joined us - a young man away from his wife in a new country, not speaking the language, living in a hotel for months. He suffered a family bereavement that he had to fly back to Uruguay for, missed one game then had to re-join us. Then he picked up an injury. All the while, he was trying to learn the language and get settled. Cut him some slack!

Everyone can see he us a special talent: The most skilful player we have. Now that he's settled with his wife in their own home, can speak and understand English very well, and will have a full pre- season with us, I'm looking forward to him proving his worth next season.

The only problem we are going to potentially have is that he is with Uruguay in the Confederations Cup. Selfishly, as a Saints fan, I hope they get knocked out in the group stages, as at least he will get a two week break before having to report back for pre-season. If Uruguay make it through to the knockout stages and on to the final, he will be coming straight from Brazil to pre- season with us and no break.

So, potentially, he could be going into a third year of solid football with no break - Bologna pre- season, Bologna season, Olympics, Bologna pre-season, Bologna season / transfer to us, Confederations Cup, pre-season with us, season with us.

A lot of his performance next season will depend on how well Uruguay do in the Confederations Cup and how we deal with his pre-season. I'm sure the club will know how to help him recover and get the best out of him - just bear his situation in mind before you judge.

5 goals in 24 appearances is a perfectly good return. Not great, but entirely adequate.

I agree though that Puncheon has had a truly excellent season.

Hopefully having a South American manager who will have experienced a similar type of schedule will help him. You raise some very good points there; As fans though there will always be a negative reaction to a player who is not seen as living up to his evident ability, even though there are perfectly understandable reasons for it.

There are, he does not want to be here and cant be arsed, how much is he on again? He only came for the money anyway, now he has that why play like he means it? Well I suppose to earn a transfer somewhere, but he has to play well for that, so maybe he will just sit on his arse.

Yes, he will obviously know more then a man that deals with the players on a professional basis.

Why have a forum then? Its a discussion, oh sorry only positive crap can be posted on here as its all about the regime, anything negative is seen as crap, I get it now, hands up, head down a Worldy facepalm coming up!

Yes, it is a discussion forum. You are however clearly an idiot with an agenda, not someone discussing things in a balanced way.

He's had loads of breaks though, including 6 weeks of no competitive football between his last game for us ( a ten minute performance) and the first game of the Confederations cup. Loads of players play far more football than he has and managed to cope. Happy to cut him some slack on the basis of settling into a new country, getting a fairly bad injury etc. He does also try too hard at times as mentioned before and I have no problem with his workrate or attitude, plus I don't think anyone doubts his technical ability. Will be an interesting season next year.

Most people have rated him on average as a 5 or 6 out of 10. Clearly people are more than capable of assessing the positive and negatives in things.
