The9 Posted 2 June, 2013 Share Posted 2 June, 2013 From WhoScored.com , based on technical match ratings and pass by pass appraisals, the end of season report for Saints indicates the following : http://www.whoscored.com/Teams/18 Southampton Characteristics (* Strengths, weaknesses and styles are calculated from team's current domestic season statistics) + Strengths Stealing the ball from the opposition - Very Strong Shooting from direct free kicks - Strong - Weaknesses Keeping possession of the ball - Weak Defending set pieces - Weak Defending against attacks down the wings - Weak Defending against through ball attacks - Weak Protecting the lead - Very Weak Avoiding individual errors - Very Weak Southampton Style Attempt through balls often Take long shots Play the offside trap Non-aggressive Consistent first eleven Do we agree with all that ? Quite surprised to see that we're "weak" at keeping possession of the ball and the apparently high numbers of offsides against us could be a side-effect of pressing. Shooting from direct free kicks? Don't see us having been strong in either of those as they suggest. Also thought a large part of our pressing game was being aggressive, so don't see how we are weak in that area.

I think by "aggressive" they mean "committing fouls" as opposed to just closing down, they had us as "aggressive" against West Brom with the two sendings off. Clearly Gaston didn't take as many of our free-kicks as we imagined - or everyone else was terrible at them. Lambert seemed to force a save or hit the woodwork with most of his. . The9 Posted 3 June, 2013 Author Share Posted 3 June, 2013 Shots : Shot Directions Left 18% Middle 67% Right 14% Shot Zones 6% 6 yard box 47% 18 yard box 47% outside box Against us, shot zones were 7%, 57% and 36% respectively, which is probably why we look like we take a high percentage from outside the area (because we do). Not necessarily a lot of shots, but a large percentage.

That's more than 10 for every league match played which clearly is impossible ! Please clarify (just out of interest!) ??
Gemmel Posted 3 June, 2013 Share Posted 3 June, 2013 Funny seeing some of those stats. I watched all of our home games and about half of our away games. If I was describing Saints down the pub, I would say that our set pieces are awful and we rarely score from them, we try and walk the ball into the back of the net, instead of taking shots from further out and our full backs stop the opposition from playing down the wings. Doctoroncall Posted 3 June, 2013 Share Posted 3 June, 2013 I would have thought attacking deadball situations (freekicks and corners) we would be noted as weak! What is the logic for keeping possession? is it based on where on the pitch, interceptions, missed passes? I thought we were reasonably good at that. Also we need to get the pass completion higher. Sour Mash Posted 3 June, 2013 Share Posted 3 June, 2013 Shooting from direct free-kicks we are strong in that Lambert usually tests the keeper and I don't think we've had that many this year anyway. The problem was more the indirect/crossed free kicks that weren't well utilised. I wouldn't pay much notice to a some of the "analysis" from these websites. There's formatting behind it on their screen, it's 43 yellow and 2 reds (just checked). Good question though, glad someone's reading it !

I agree, but at the same time, when Lambert takes a free kick he always shoots and usually on target, we DO try to walk the ball in and therefore shoot less from inside the area (and more from outside proportionately, just I'm guessing less overall in total ?), and we are good at defending the wings WHEN our full backs are there, but as they're on average on the half way line, we're easily exploited in behind them by direct passing, as only the CBs are back. I'm guessing it's just pass completion, I think our crossing brings that number down, some games we did a lot of crossing and they're the generally one of the least completed passes. Supersubpuckett Posted 3 June, 2013 Share Posted 3 June, 2013 just goes to show stats don't always tell the real story - the other thing to beare in mind is that this ill obviously include our horrendous start to the campaign. It would be interesting to see what the analysis says if the data was run from beginning of November

Deano6 Posted 3 June, 2013 Share Posted 3 June, 2013 I think the long shots stat is purely based on the fact J Rod has a pop every time he sees the goal in even his peripheral vision.
