Says the stats!

Stats Zone Premier League Central Midfielder of the Year:

Morgan Schneiderlin

First, some housekeeping. By "central midfielder" we don't mean a trequartista floating between the lines (and watching aloof from afar while his team-mates defend). We mean one of the 2 in the 4-2-3-1, what might be demeaningly referred to as a "defensive midfielder" if the position wasn't frequently occupied by players with the panache of Steven Gerrard, Mikel Arteta and Paul Scholes.

That said, the winner of the inaugural Stats Zone Central Midfielder of the Year Award isn't exactly a household name, except in places where stats lovers live. Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin spent most of the season topping the Premier League's rankings for both interceptions (he ended up with 139) and tackles (146).

These figures underline the fact he's the perfect midfielder for Southampton's hard-pressing game, but the Obernai sensation also impressed in possession. He chipped in with five goals, not a bad rate for a central midfielder at a club many tipped to struggle, and had a very tidy 84% pass completion rate – and from nearly 2,000 attempted passes: only eight players completed more passes over the course of the season.

One of those was Mikel Arteta, whose 2,750 passes is matched only by Xavi in Europe's top five leagues. The judges also commended Liverpool's Steven Gerrard, Manchester City's Yaya Toure and Everton's Marouane Fellaini, but the stats don't lie: Schneiderlin is the Stats Zone Central Midfielder of the Year.

Key Stats: Few players manage to get into double figures for interceptions; after all, that means that once every nine minutes they have successfully read the opponents' intentions and interrupted an attack. Even Schneiderlin, who topped the season list, 'only' averaged 4.17 per game. However, at Wigan and at home to QPR he went into overdrive with 10 interceptions. At the DW, he also managed to top the passing table – and with an 87% completion rate. Now that's a midfielder.

ah yes QPR at home, we had 20+ shots and scored 1 goal, they had about a third of that and scored 2 which is exactly why we need a real striker before opening day next season.

I got that in L1 and the championship twice. Just for seeing potential in a player you're an idiot. He was lightweight, that was the reason some of our geniuses wanted him replaced. Morgan and Cork as a partnership are the biggest reason to be positive about this team. Brilliant CM.

In fact Morgan looks like a pretty big bloke actually, think the OS need to update his stats on that. When you see them all in a line before kick off he looks way taller than the 5 11 that the OS gives him.

Wouldn't look out of place in the best teams in the world. He's awesome. Needs to do it again for us next year. Him and Corky are so important to us.

not so important that half of the fans seem determined to replace one of them with Nainggolan or Wanyama or whatever it is. Those blokes aren't going to want to sit on the bench. Great thing about Morgan and Jack is that they don't get sent off because I guess they know just how far they can push refs. Nainggolan has an awful disciplinary record and Wanyama plays in a minor league so it's hard to tell.

The thing with CMs is they're a lot more likely to pick up cards as they're more heavily involved than the players at the extremes of the pitch - and as well as that, as they're involved in more tackles, they're also more likely to pick up contact injuries. So we need more than just the three decent defensive-minded midfielders, and as is always the case we can move on the fringe players, which in this case is the likes of Chaplow, Hammond, Guly, and De Ridder.

I would like to see us have at least 3 good quality CM's and then Davis and JWP. Neither are very good playing defensively as they don't really tackle that much. Cork and Morgan could also do with some competition IMO.

I fully agree with you on that one - someone like Nagginolan, Biglia or Rodwell would be perfect.

please not Biglia, he'll get a migraine about every 30 seconds.Going to Lazio very soon anyway, 6 million euros apparently according to the Belgian papers. Too cheap for us, can't be any good at that price :smug:

I'd keep Cork and Schneiderlin as our first choice, settled partnership and bring in Liam Bridcutt from Brighton as realistic back up for them.

He doesn't score enough. Reminds me of Anders, in that regard (but I think Morgan is better).

Oh dear. "He chipped in with five goals, not a bad rate for a central midfielder". Suggests you don't really understand his role. I bet you used to say about Matty Oakley that he didn't score enough goals either. Do you think Jack Cork scores enough goals? How anyone can compare Spiderman with Anders Svensson is beyond me. But there everyone is entitled to an opinion.

The stick people received on this forum whilst we were in League 1 and the Championship for suggesting Schneiderlin would excel and get better in the Prem!

They have other targets now. (If I mentioned anyone in particular they of little insight would rush to 'prove' that he really is a useless no-hoper.)

To be fair his goals scored have rocketed this season (at least I think they have!). He has been the stand out player again for me and I can't remember a season when anyone else in the team was better.

Worth £35 million now imho

Another good season and could be closer to 50m imho

If he was english that would be pretty accurate. Personally I rate him about £20mil but just have a worry if someone came in with £10m-£15m our club would snap it up!

Morgan is going no where, like all of our players he is fully committed to the project and shares the chairmans ambitions. He will only leave if its in the best interests of Southampton FC.

The club is ambitious...... It WILL NOT sell its best player(s)

He is still young and hungry and will improve under Pinocchio imho ffs

  • 7 months later...

I dubbed him "The Beast of St. Mary's" after seeing his stats from last night's game, but now it seems he's the beast of the whole PL.

Too often his contribution to the team goes unnoticed because of the position he plays in (much like Busquets in Barcelona), but he's clearly one of our most important players.

I'm only worried he might be tempted if an offer from Liverpool comes in. I remember reading an interview with him where he said Gerrard was his idol.

Another very special performance from him last night. He's the complete midfielder. Got everything. We're very lucky to have him. Cheers Wupes! ;)

I add my vote to this post - Morgan is a special player and last night was one of his trademark games - like a good film or book, you really have to watch a reply several times to appreciate the class.

The one thing Morgan lacks is to be effective in other teams final third . Is shooting is not up to scratch and he can't played a killer ball. Other than that he's superb.

To be fair, if he had regular goals and assists in his locker....he'd be up there with Iniesta and Xavi and wouldn't be at Southampton! It's not really a weakness I'd say, but it's a lack of his game which increases our chance of keeping hold of him!

lols adam's key strengths is powder puff shot & average pace. I also rate wanyama for his questionable distribution and boruc for his cruyff turns

He CAN play the killer ball, it's just our style is a lot more conservative. Remember his assist against Ipswich?
