You underestimate our fans. Have a word with the likes of Colinjb; he's already said he doesn't like the current kit but wouldn't be able to resist buying it if the new one was similar.

Football kits appear to be the heroin of the mboard generation.

Its really quite something to behold just how many people will spend £40 and upwards on a piece of clothing they don't actually like all that much.

Isn't it ? I've spent all season wearing something I hate every other Saturday. On the bright side, I didn't pay the club a penny for it. Then again, as, if seems likely, they've hoiked all the Umbro kit without attempting to sell it off, they're not really bothered about appealing to fans with their merchandising anyway. I'll find out later, I'm going to West Quay so will take that opportunity to see what's in the club shop (assuming it's got anything in it now the adidas deal has started). And yes, I will be paying for parking, I'm actually going to SportsDirect to see if they have any random cheap kit on sale. I also have asked Granty to source me some cheap Brazilian stuff if he gets the chance, and had an England shirt BNWT delivered this morning that I got for under £10 on eBay.

It's a curse, I tells ya.

I agree, but I must have expressed it in terms that Dorkish didn't understand. There is an element of the fanbase of any club who will buy the new kit regardless of whether they like it or not, just because it is the new strip of their club. As such, they lack the mental strength to decide not to buy it on principle. Acts of principle require determination, therefore a degree of mental strength. These people are like sheep, with no mind of their own, similar to the plastics that support the glory clubs. If they are not prepared to boycott a kit they despise, then they deserve to have it inflicted on them.

I can understand kids wanting the new strip. They have no idea of tradition or history, and care about it just about as little. And I kind of understand people who don't give a sh*t what we play in, though obviously disagree with that way of thinking. But we're talking about a decent proportion of fully grown adults who willingly pay money for clothing they don't like! The9 is forgiven as he's a bit of a kit obsessive, but I reckon there's bloody hundreds of others walking round in something they're not too keen on. 95% in the polls on here and in the Echo last year said they didn't like the current kit, it would be interesting to hear just how many of that 95% went out and bought it.

I know of two lads I used to play 5 a side footy against who both bought this season's shirts (one had the home, the other the away), neither of whom were fans of teh shirt but thought they should buy nonetheless. I just can't quite get my head round that one.

'Ucking hell Les 'boycott the kit they despise' do people really despise football kits?!! I think you might be taking this a bit too seriously as usual.

Is it a lack of mental strength or is it just that they want the latest kit?

there are of course some that angrily rip up their season ticket in protest vowing never to return, but lack the mental strength not to not go.

I pretty much agree with that. It's not always a logical thought process though, I haven't bought the away kit this season (which I like) because I don't like the home kit, which I own, but didn't buy from the club. In previous years I've also bought the shorts and socks for mix-and-matching at 5-a-side/training etc, this year I haven't bought any of it. But nevertheless I've had a current Saints kit to wear to matches, cos that's just what I do. Early in the season I was rotating retros for a couple of weeks, but I soon got bored of that and my mate won one so I bought it from him. But basically this season is the closest I get to a kit "protest".

As for this adidas thing for 2013/14, if it's the West Ham away basically reversed, which seems likely, then I actually really like the design, though I hate it as a Saints kit. I've started wearing more adidas training stuff recently anyway with the Team GB stuff and I'll definitely get the black/gold away provided it doesn't look cheap, assuming that's what it is.

I'm not sheeping it, I just find other reasons to justify buying it. Everyone needs a hobby, this is mine.

I don't get that either, assuming they don't have 3 boxes full of football shirts in their garage and two on top of the wardrobe, like some people I could mention.

Strange, isn't it? Probably has lots to do with the tribal psychology so that people will wear the tribal outfit which has been decreed for them by the tribal elders, and liking or disliking it doesn't enter their minds. Whether we would have accepted such a complete change in our colours remains to be seen. The sash kit was quite a departure and very successful, but there were unusual circumstances for the change and it looked good and had some basis in our past history. If we were to switch from red to blue though, I wonder what percentage of our fanbase would buy the new kit, especially as they are the colours of our closest/distant rivals. It would be nice to believe that it would only be a small percentage, but as you say, that is not a certainty. There's nowt so queer as folk as they say oop North.

I think paying £53 to go to Man City just to guarantee getting a ticket to Arsenal is more of that sort of thing, not sure it really relates to kit purchases, the club clearly doesn't give a toss about maximising their replica revenue or they wouldn't have left 8 month-old kit on sale at full price for the last month, or sold the yellow kit off cheap last year and not stocked it this season, etc.
