Saint Mikey Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 Just listened to an interview with Jimmy on Keys & Gray (podcast from yesterday). What a signing he was for £30k. Not sure if we've had a player that can rival his combined hard work, toughness and ability since he left? I know the game has moved on since then, but the only CM's I can think of that have made a sustained impression on our team has been: Oakley and the current pair of Schneiderlin & Cork. We've had so much dross in there for 20-odd years.

ecuk268 Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 Our best midfielder and a worthy replacement for Steve Williams. Branfoots biggest mistake in letting him go.
Stevie61163 Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 Carlton Palmer, Paul Telfer, Alan McLoughlin see there have been loads............favorite all time midfielder Steve Williams
Sour Mash Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 He was absolute quality for us. Much better technically than just the "hardman" that he seems to be remembered as.
Saint Mikey Posted 29 May, 2013 Author Share Posted 29 May, 2013 Carlton Palmer, Paul Telfer, Alan McLoughlin see there have been loads............favorite all time midfielder Steve Williams I take it this is a joke? Palmer was decent for us, but played, what a season and half? Telfer played mostly RM and McLoughlin was a load of toss and a complete disappointment, given he was the clubs record signing and first £1m player (if I remember correctly). jasonb Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 My favourite player as a nipper. Won a competition to win the new away shirt, presented to me by Jimmy at the club shop on day of release. A few photo's for the Echo. A nicer bloke you will not find. Spoke to me about the kit and how it would be tricky against the crowd (it was the horrible blue-flecked away kit from the early 90's). I was too star-struck to say anything other than the usual thank-yous etc. Lovely fella.
Prince Jazzbo Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 I saved two penalties from Steve Williams years ago. Very minor claim to fame.
saint1977 Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 Massive favourite with Saints fans. Branfoot started as he meant to go on when he released him and replaced him with Terry Hurlock. I know Hurlock has a certain cult value but he wasn't a patch on Jimmy as a footballer. Jimmy had one heck of a shot on him, can remember him nearly taking the roof of the net out with a free kick V Sheff Wed and a long range pearler at Liverpool which would have meant a lot to him. Many an office in Southampton with Saints fans in it had a poster on Jimmy, Branfoot made a big mistake there. Good story in MLT's book about him, if an opposition player dished it out to the young players like MLT, Rod Wallace or Shearer and they told Jimmy about it, Jimmy would soon put a strong challenge in on the offending opponent to stop our youngsters being pushed out of the match. At Forest, Stuart Pearce got MLT early and when MLT told Jimmy, he took one look at a very wound-up 'Psycho' and said to MLT 'sorry, not today son'! Chez Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 how many goals did Jimmy score for us? My memory is terrible, but he always seemed to be smacking them in from 20 yards
Window Cleaner Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 how many goals did Jimmy score for us? My memory is terrible, but he always seemed to be smacking them in from 20 yards Just 10 in fact, Case's attacking ability is very much an urban myth as far as Saints are concerned I'm afraid. Players like Case in their original form wouldn't stay on the pitch 5 minutes in our day and age. Probably wouldn't even be PL standard any more. ericb Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 Was between Case and Armstrong for my favourite midfielder at that point, really is amazing to think the players we saw back then. Shilts, Wallace, Le Tiss, Case, Armstrong, Shearer...
norwaysaint Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 Jimmy Case kind of set the mold for us, as the main thing people have gone on about us needing for about 20 years has been a midfielder "in the Jimmy Case mold". Oakley was never that effective and was one of those players who was over-hyped every time he was out of the team, people thinking we'd be great once we got him back, then he would come back and everybody would remember that most of the time, he was quite ineffective. Schneiderlin has so far proven to be everything people wanted Oakley to be and the closest we've come to replacing Case. Very different player, but with the ability to control the game from midfield. Oakley very rarely controlled a game. It remains to be seen how effective MS is without the solid support of Cork. Most people see them as a partnership that works. Sooner or later we're going to find out just how well they can function without each other.
Golden Balls Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 I only heard the part where he was talking about Liverpool. Did he talk much about his time down here? Seen him battered a couple of times down the Waterfront in Shamrock Quay.
Saint Mikey Posted 30 May, 2013 Author Share Posted 30 May, 2013 I only heard the part where he was talking about Liverpool. Did he talk much about his time down here? Seen him battered a couple of times down the Waterfront in Shamrock Quay. He did a bit. Talked about playing with fantastic young players, Le Tiss, Shearer and Wallaces. Also talked about Lawrie Mac signing him and then leaving straight away.
