SuperMikey Posted 28 May, 2013 Share Posted 28 May, 2013 Just come through now that Roberto Martinez has resigned from Wigan. Will be interesting to see if he makes the move to Everton now or waits around for the Swansea job to open up when Laudrup is inevitably poached in the next 12 months. Think he could be very good for Everton - strikes a nice balance between organisation and free-flowing football. Made some decent signings at Wigan and Swansea too. Glasgow_Saint Posted 28 May, 2013 Share Posted 28 May, 2013 Stoke or Everton
Micky Posted 28 May, 2013 Share Posted 28 May, 2013 Pulis to Everton, Martinez to Stoke...! That would upset the natives on Merseyside......
Nolan Posted 28 May, 2013 Share Posted 28 May, 2013 Dave Whelan was on TalkSport and said Kenwright asked for permission to speak to Martinez last Friday. Sounds like Everton is almost a done deal. (They may be hoping a new manager will stop the moans over the badge). Sent from my Lumia 800 using Board Express
sandwichsaint Posted 28 May, 2013 Share Posted 28 May, 2013 Maybe Martinez said he wouldn't go there unless they changed the badge?
Marsdinho Posted 28 May, 2013 Share Posted 28 May, 2013 I've never really rated Martinez, and couldn't understand what Whelan was on about when he said that Martinez would only leave to go to a "top, top club". I honestly think that Whelan thought he hand the next Man U / Real / Barce manager at his club. Would love to have seen his face when Martinez told him he wanted to go to Everton. I have noticed though that the spin has started already, apparently Everton would be ideal for Martinez now. I only wish he had left Wigan to go to Stoke, that would have even funnier! Crab Lungs Posted 28 May, 2013 Share Posted 28 May, 2013 Didn't Whelan break his leg in a FA Cup final 60 years ago?
Sour Mash Posted 28 May, 2013 Share Posted 28 May, 2013 Martinez has always been the obvious choice for Everton and can definitely see him going there. Very tough act to follow in Moyes and a lot more pressure for him than at Wigan.
pap Posted 28 May, 2013 Share Posted 28 May, 2013 The Evertonians are already reminding people that he turned down a job at their neighbours last year. They'll love him for that, at least. Still quite a bit of general uncertainty about the fella, both on this thread, on the podcasts I listen to and my Everton supporting mates. Very tough act to follow in Moyes and a lot more pressure for him than at Wigan. And it's been very discreetly handled as well, now if he'd announced he wanted to sign for Everton immediately after they got relegated well it would be like hitting on a widow at a funeral wouldn't it. Always on the cards as soon as Benitez turned them down (which he no doubt did, not that it would have gone down with Everton fans anyway) but at least there was a visible "mourning period".. Marsdinho Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 This. Just a Spanish Mike Walker. Yep, Martinez wouldn't have lasted 5 mins at Saints during the 90's. Battling against relegation each year would have cost him his job, not made him an ideal candidate for Real Madrid !!!
Appy Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 I really don't see it with Martinez, if he is that good a manager he would get his teams playing well for the whole season, not just in time to stay up or this year too late.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 Heard someone say that Martinez is the premier leagues Pinocchio? I understand the comparison as they have both taken teams to the bottom of the league but managed to keep media views on potential very positive. But Tino was sacked while Martinez left & Martinez did win a trophy!! Harsh on Martinez to compare the two imho
