simo Posted 27 May, 2013 Share Posted 27 May, 2013 There's an interview with Alex and his dad , His day says one of the reasons he pushed for Alex to leave Saint's was because he didn't want him being overlooked by England! Imo the main reason was money !

Crazy Diamond Posted 27 May, 2013 Share Posted 27 May, 2013 Whether or not that was the genuine reason we'll never know - but the chances of a Southampton player being picked for England in this day and age? Minimal, I'd say. Lallana being the exception, I suppose.
S-Clarke Posted 27 May, 2013 Share Posted 27 May, 2013 Very true though. England squad instantly, yet if he'd stayed and been playing for us every week, he still wouldn't have a cap. Very true. He's had a very, very, very poor season this year, yet he's still called up for the upcoming friendlies. We've got English players in our squad who have contributed so much more this year, and will never, ever get a sniff. That's probably what's going to stop us holding onto them in the long-term. We have been doing the same with nothing but failure For some reason, I thought Roy would have been different Even when Carroll pulled out, he opted to not replace him. We have been doing the same with nothing but failure For some reason, I thought Roy would have been different Even when Carroll pulled out, he opted to not replace him. Why the hell not Two friendlies and yet we pick the same old faces - not sure what Hodgson thinks he is going to learn. I think part of the problem is the pressure England managers are put under by the short termism of supporters. Personally I would have preferred it if the FA had said "look, a European team isn't likely to win a World Cup in Brazil so we are going to lay the foundations for the future by giving younger players a chance in the qualifiers - there's a risk we won't qualify but the experience for them will be invaluable so we will back the manager whatever and hope the supporters will too". JoeShmoe Posted 27 May, 2013 Share Posted 27 May, 2013 You have to wonder about Wenger and Arsenal's coaching, all these young players they've bought, their academy, their big spiel about building from the youth team, and how many have really progressed and are in the first team? Wilshire and Fabergas being about the only two i can readily think of. Walcott was already ready-made when he got there and if anything hasn't lived up to his potential consistently

Minimal, I'd say. Lallana being the exception, I suppose. Maybe before he left, now I'd say is a better chance, if we can nail a few top players we could get top 10, Shaw and Clyne should get in the squad in a couple of years no probs. Saint Malc Posted 27 May, 2013 Share Posted 27 May, 2013 England will NEVER win a tournament. Not with the unelected, unaccountable FA in charge. Along with the diabolical squad selections, they have been the underlying problem for decades and we can't do a thing about it so I don't bother letting it get to me any more. MLT was bought in from else where Horrendous trolling surely, all those players joined the club between the ages of eight and 12.... Ergo they are products of our youth academy. Cesc was a barca youth product, ramsay was a cardiff youth product.... I mean how the hell can you say that and then count oxo as our player... By your argument he is an Arsenal youth product.... LostBoys Posted 28 May, 2013 Share Posted 28 May, 2013 AOC went for money and security for life. You can take a view about the development of his football career as it appears to me Wenger does not know how to use him. There have been some occasional good performances in some games but mostly his backside just has the imprint of the seat. in terms of whether he deserves (amongst others) England selection, this is in serious doubt but I have given up with Hodgson. OnTheCross Posted 28 May, 2013 Share Posted 28 May, 2013 combination of money, prestige, sponsorship (more money), champions league footy and international recognition, rather than any particular one I'd have thought. Hopefully, there will come a point where Saints are doing well enough that youngsters see that getting regular footy with us as opposed to being a bit part in another squad makes much more of a difference in terms of their ambition. Perhaps we can also use dvds of players whose careers stuttered, stalled an lost that potential to youngsters to show them it's not always the best move in the longer term. We'll have to see how things pan out for Walcott and AOC.
eelpie Posted 29 May, 2013 Share Posted 29 May, 2013 Very true though. England squad instantly, yet if he'd stayed and been playing for us every week, he still wouldn't have a cap. Not immediately. But in the long run he would have developed into a better player by continuing his development at Saints. So also would have Theo. That is what a group of Arsenal fans said last December in conversation in London near Waterloo last December. (I had interrupted their moans about Theo at the time)
