Saint Garrett Posted 22 May, 2013 Share Posted 22 May, 2013 TBF, If you haven't got the ball then you can't make a pass. I would say it's best to concentrate on % rather than how many.
RonManager Posted 22 May, 2013 Share Posted 22 May, 2013 How far is a long ball? Do corners and goal kicks/punts count or is it just outfield balls? What about long throw-ins. So many questions, my brain hurts!
Pamplemousse Posted 22 May, 2013 Share Posted 22 May, 2013 I believe a long ball counts as any pass over 25 yards in distance or something like that, whether played in the air or on the ground
KK the 2nd Posted 22 May, 2013 Share Posted 22 May, 2013 Seems to be a strong correlation between the low % teams and top positions in league (with exception of Wigan & Saints)?
Matthew Le God Posted 22 May, 2013 Share Posted 22 May, 2013 There is a big difference between an aimless hoof up the pitch and a good long pass either to the man or into space for someone to run onto. Something stats like this don't take into consideration.

Agreed but there are, nonetheless, few if any surprises in the order in which teams appear in that list, the teams we know as more attractive footballing sides appearing towards the end. The Cat Posted 22 May, 2013 Share Posted 22 May, 2013 If aimless hoofs were counted then Hooiveld would be in the top 5 teams by himself.

Didcot Saint Posted 22 May, 2013 Share Posted 22 May, 2013 I hope Fat Sam reads that then the buffoon saying that West Ham aren't a long ball team might realise what a cretin he is.
Barry the Badger Posted 22 May, 2013 Share Posted 22 May, 2013 "we are southampton, we play on the floor" followed by Yoshida playing a long crossfield pass (although it was directed) and then about 3000 blokes giggling was quite a funny moment on Sunday. I reckon percent possession is pretty meaningless. It's what you do with it. Game last year Chelsea beat someone by 5 something and40% possession.
