Not really twisting it is it.

It is Turkish, Whilst I do think we are setting ourselves up for a fall with all this European / Champions League talk, no one has ever suggested top four next season.

"Pochettino has also indicated he expects his side to improve and finish in the top four"

Actual quote -

"‘Why in a couple of years? It might be next year," which you can tell was said with a smile on his face. Also shows how sh*te the journalism is that they accredited that quote to Terry Paine in the more recent article.

"I want to be back in the Champions League with Southampton and I believe it is not unreal."

Why do people get tetchy when the papers report our top four ambitions, when "shoot for the moon"-based horsesh it is on this forum seven days a week?

It's 2+2=5 stuff. They've said they want to be in the top four in the future (2), and that they expect to improve/invest greatly next season (2). The two have been put together to say we expect to be top four next season, which is something else entirely and is untrue from what we've heard.

There is every chance, of course, that they've spoken to someone that we haven't heard from. These things happen.

Obviously haven't read the Daily Echo today then. Which is fair enough. But I think you'll find this looks like a rehash of the story in there.

Are you saying that you think journos should write stuff like fans do dream about...... or should they be intelligent enough to assess what´s been said and HOW it´s been said?

Journos will twist anything that has been said in cases like this to sensationalise it, in order to maximise sales.

We would all be well ****ed if they came out and said next years aim is to finish just above the relagation spots and it might happen next year! Surely its better to be ambitious and aim high. Even if it is unlikely.

Probably better just to say nothing about fourth.

Exactly, CB Fry is the first to jump on fans saying this stuff but thinks its fine for the papers, it doesn't stand up.

I'm not getting tetchy, I know what our ambitions are - but he has NOT said he expects us to be in the top four next season. If that were the case, then finishing 5th would be seen as a failure.

The only person associated with the club who has stated Top 4 as an aspiration is Terry Paine, as quoted in the Echo last week.

All Pochettino has done is batted back a journo's question in a tongue in cheek manner when asked if he shared a player's ambition (Boruc?) to qualify for the champion's league in two years. Much in the same sarcastic way he batted back the "is Luke Shaw leaving?" question with: "nah, I'm gonna raid Chelsea's team instead".

Neither the manager nor chairman have explicitly stated that it is the club's aim to finish in the top 4 next year (which isn't to say they aren't aiming for such an eventuality of course)

Did the club say something about fourth for next season? is is this just another Gimpoid rumourfact. Do you have a direct quote from the club, that has escaped general attention?

I know I shouldn't feed a troll but here goes...

The quote has already been posted on this thread but here's an article from a month ago:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2314917/Mauricio-Pochettino-says-Southampton-finish-four.html

"'In the next two years I want to be back in the Champions League with Southampton and I believe it’s not unreal.

'We are a well organised side, with great belief in our abilities and it’s not an accident that we have beaten Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City recently.'

When quizzed on whether it will take time to get to that level, Pochettino said: 'Why in a couple of years? It might be next year. I think in football if you have to be something, you have to be optimistic - why not dream of big achievements, big goals?

'We are an ambitious club and we have a clear way of how we want to proceed and the type of football we want to be playing, where there are means of getting that done.

'Why not put in the effort, the imagination to make that happen and dream together to reach for the stars, why not?'"

These are dreams, MP uses the word on more than one occassion. Only the headline the dailyfaily says this is a target, and then goes on to quote a load of stuff about freaming, aiming for the stars. Seems like some people have difficulty with comprehension, I blame the present day education system.

British mentailty of wanting to tell people but not wanting to listen! We could learn a lot from nations of a more sub-servient mentality because when you listen and take onboard comments, you learn.

I'm all for ambition. I think Nige had a better way of managing the players and pyschological aspects but what we lost with that we gained with tactical noose. I think the talk of CL finish was foolhardy and upset the player mindset for the subsequent West Brom loss. The team were on the beach.

No issues with news reporting though. Hacks will always look to report, regardless of journo agenda. We moaned when we were not in the news, now we are......
