iansums Posted 21 May, 2013 Share Posted 21 May, 2013 How is this paid, now, over the course of the past season or next season?
The9 Posted 21 May, 2013 Share Posted 21 May, 2013 IIRC "Merit Fees" is the league position prize money and "facility fees" is how much you get based on your number of tv appearances, with a minimum of 10 live games shown. Merit payments were £755,881 per place. So this season tv has decided Fulham, Norwich, Reading, Saints, Stoke, Swansea, West Brom and Wigan weren't worth seeing much. Judging by the 480k more that QPR got than the others mentioned, that's the amount per extra live tv match shown. Does raise the strange prospect of Man U getting £8m more than any of those sides just for tv appearances, which means any one of the "10 appearances" teams would need to finish 11 places above Man U just to offset that with money gained by league placing ! CB Fry Posted 21 May, 2013 Share Posted 21 May, 2013 Not happy seeing Villa and Toon getting a higher total take than us. Both bigger than we are, so stands to reason they would be on TV more.
tajjuk Posted 21 May, 2013 Share Posted 21 May, 2013 LOL @ Stoke getting more the same facility fee, no one wants to watch them. I reckon after some good games against the big boys this year we'll pop up on TV a few more times next year. We're down low because we were newly promoted but considering pretty much the whole world only watches games with Arsenal, Liverpool, Utd, Man City and Chelsea performing strongly against them will get us noticed more I reckon. stevegrant Posted 21 May, 2013 Share Posted 21 May, 2013 So this season tv has decided Fulham, Norwich, Reading, Saints, Stoke, Swansea, West Brom and Wigan weren't worth seeing much. Judging by the 480k more that QPR got than the others mentioned, that's the amount per extra live tv match shown. Worth noting that, for the first time ever, Sky (and ESPN to a much lesser extent) decided that rather than making an effort to show every club the minimum 10 times, they'd simply pay the requisite "facility fees" to the clubs they couldn't be bothered showing and pick a more attractive game instead. As a result, Fulham (9), Norwich (7), Reading (, Saints (, Stoke (, Swansea (9), West Brom ( and Wigan (9) were all televised fewer than the supposed minimum, but each received money equivalent to having been shown 10 times. Not happy seeing Villa and Toon getting a higher total take than us. Why? They both have much bigger fanbases and this season had "car crash viewing" potential for the neutral. Also, if you're going to go down the "well we finished above them" angle, we were below both of them for most of the season.
Whitey Grandad Posted 21 May, 2013 Share Posted 21 May, 2013 We also lost the home game against Chelsea, which was good for me.

I did wonder if they were allowed to do that, had assumed not. Certainly felt like we weren't on 10 times, turns out we weren't ! I'm actually alright with that in terms of not being inconvenienced by kick off times, but does that then mean that the other clubs who were shown more still get the additional fees as well ? Seems likely. Will be interesting to see if we're ever on next season with this precedent !
stevegrant Posted 21 May, 2013 Share Posted 21 May, 2013 I did wonder if they were allowed to do that, had assumed not. I don't think they'd even considered it before this year, looking back at various articles on the excellent Swiss Ramble site, every club had been shown at least 10 times. Last season, the numbers were remarkably consistent, from 7th place down (Everton), only Liverpool (23), Norwich (11), QPR (14) and Blackburn (11) were shown more than the bare 10 times. I'm actually alright with that in terms of not being inconvenienced by kick off times, but does that then mean that the other clubs who were shown more still get the additional fees as well ? Seems likely. Yes. I assume that, as a result, Sky had to stump up extra cash for each of the 14 team appearances they were short, so that's an extra £8.1m in total.
