Saint Jude Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 A bit harsh on Jos in my view....he hasn't been great... But to put him in the team based on own goals... Isn't avert valid stat, compared to all the defenders who got out the way... And didn't bother trying to block anything...
Crowds Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 It's not harsh at all. Jos was exposed for the player he is!
70's Mike Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 a bit like Franny bet all the so called skilled players rate him, all sorts to make a team. 5 own goals wonder how many he blocked.
SNSUN Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 I'd have Moses and Welbeck, if their respective clubs are too embarrassed to keep them...
UpweySaint Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 And yet Welbeck is still in the England squad. As is Rodwell ahead of our own jack cork, not that im hinting at any bias or suchlike ...
Forester Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 Far, far better than he was at the beginning of the season and has become part of a reliable back four. The stats since Xmas are pretty good defensively. To rate it on own goals is a bit daft
saintmatt Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 Say what you want about Jos but he's damn good at winning the aerial battles!
Deanovski Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 fox kicked the ball at him and it went in his own net how terrible of him.
farawaysaint Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 Really effective at some points in the season a giant in certain games, equally frustrating in others. Worthy of a most ineffective defender award? Not a chance in hell.
Dr Who? Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 He did really well after a terrible start. He is also a Saints player everyone, and for that he gets my full backing.
Manuel Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 I stopped reading the stats once I saw they'd spelled Hooiveld's name wrong.
Appy Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 Nice bloke, decent championship player, but a player we need to leave behind if we are to move on to the next level, a liability at this level.
RonManager Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 How is scoring own goals being ineffective? Nothing affects a game more than goals.
pingwing Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 Hasn't he had another 4 or 5 goals deflected in off him as well??
RonManager Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 Hasn't he had another 4 or 5 goals deflected in off him as well?? Fair play to the boy, he is f*cking good at it!
SNSUN Posted 20 May, 2013 Posted 20 May, 2013 Hasn't he had another 4 or 5 goals deflected in off him as well?? To spin that into a positive, he's almost always in the right place at the right time!
Marino Posted 21 May, 2013 Posted 21 May, 2013 The Gafferino obviously likes him - and presumably knows a good CB when he sees one.
The9 Posted 21 May, 2013 Posted 21 May, 2013 I'd be a lot more bothered about Vermaelen's tendency to make errors leading to chances, and Craig Gardner getting dribbled past repeatedly, than Hooiveld's OGs.

In fairness to Gardner hes a cm whos been stuck at rb for a part of the season and that may explain, at least, some of his poor mistakes.

Lighthouse Posted 21 May, 2013 Posted 21 May, 2013 In fairness to Jos, none of those o.g.s were exactly Gareth Barry. The Fulham one was probably the worse but he thought it was going in at the far post and needed to block it. He had to make a snap judgement, 6 inches to the left and the ball would have gone in off the post and Davis wouldn't have saved it. The Arsenal goal just bounced off Davis, straight at him a foot from goal. He had no time to react at all, just unfortunate. The Newcastle goal was 100% Fox's doing. He just smacked the ball straight at Jos when all he had to do was let the ball roll out for a throw in.

I think he could have done a lot better with the Arsenal goal, and would have done had it happened later in the season. His reaction was panicked and contributed to the goal instead of saving it - but it was only the third Prem match he'd played in and our defence was far from settled into the Prem and constantly being found that split-second too slow at that stage.
