BallBoy Posted 19 May, 2013 Share Posted 19 May, 2013 If we had scored 1 more goal today we would have been level with Fulham on points, goal difference and goals scored. We also drew both games with them. Does anybody know what would have happened? The only difference was that Fulham won 1 more game than us. Would that have kept them above us? Totally hypthetical conundrum for sad people like me who enjoy looking at league tables.

DuncanRG Posted 19 May, 2013 Share Posted 19 May, 2013 I believe we'd have finished exactly even and that would have been that. The discussion came up with the Arsenal/Chelsea thing last week but I think a play-off only occurs when something rests on it, as in 4th v 3rd. Prize money would presumably be split evenly
Matthew Le God Posted 19 May, 2013 Share Posted 19 May, 2013 C.4. The position of Clubs in the table shall be determined by the number of points scored in that Season, the Club having scored the highest number of points being at the top of the table and the Club having scored the lowest number of points being at the bottom. C.5. If any 2 or more Clubs have scored the same number of points their position in the table shall be determined on goal difference, that is to say, the difference between the total number of goals scored by and against a Club in League Matches in that Season, and the higher or highest placed Club shall be the Club with the higher or highest goal difference. C.6. If any 2 or more Clubs have scored the same number of points and have the same goal difference the higher or highest placed Club shall be the Club having scored the most goals in League Matches in that Season. C.7. Subject to Rule C.14, if any 2 or more Clubs have scored the same number of points, have the same goal difference and have scored the same number of goals in League Matches in that Season they shall be deemed to occupy the same position in the table. C.14. If at the end of the Season either the League Champions or the Clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because 2 or more Clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the Clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding League Matches on neutral grounds, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the Board. Play-offs do take place for position (as was possible between Chelsea and Arsenal), but are only actioned if they are "meaningful" (race for 1st, 3rd and 17th, always, I think.....plus maybe for a Europa spot had that kicked in?). SaintBobby Posted 20 May, 2013 Share Posted 20 May, 2013 Like 1982 second Group stages and many Copa America group stages too. Aye. Except those things are basically scheduled. Having to suddenly organise a 3 or 4 way tourney between, say, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal or Villa, Sunderland, Wigan and Newcastle would be a sight to see. trousers Posted 20 May, 2013 Share Posted 20 May, 2013 (edited) What happens if every team in the league finishes 'tied'? How long would it take to play all the play offs? Good game. Edited 20 May, 2013 by trousers
