SAINTS 1-1 Stoke City // Post-Match Reaction

Now is the time for Pochettino to really show what he's made off. Since he came, the style of play has got better, and while we may not have had the results, we've played some teams off the park. We need a little spark in attacking midfield (someone in the Coutinho mold) and someone to regularly bang the goals in. Tighten up at the back and there's no reason why we can't really challenge next season.

I think a point was the likely score after our recent form, but with other results as they were, we were always destined for 14th, one less place than I'd predicted. (Thanks to blooming Norwich. I'll not hear the end of that all summer.)

Phew.

MP and NC staying.

Finished 14th in the Premier League with something to build on for next season.

Now sell the mediocre, buy in some talent and lets push on!

... oh and Pompey finish LAST in League 1.

All in all a great season. Lots of hope. Lots of good days ahead. Just need to get the manager speaking English and buying some decent players!

I thought Rickie looked sharper today

Just in time for...oh. :-)

15 goals this season, joint top English scorer with Lampard. A very good first season at this level all in all, and a Saints legend, but sadly he can be improved upon. Still a useful player to have in and around the squad though, and a decent bloke to boot by all accounts.

3 million lost because we couldn't brat Stoke. Pochettino, you now have a transfer window, pre season and 10 games to prove your worth. I don't buy the inability to win over the past 6 games. Don't blame the players bar Lallana being Captain, Pochettino doesn't know how to change tactics and use the players we have. Atrocious end of season :(

A lot of work to be done over the summer, our performances of late have been uninspiring really. After Stoke scored we suddenly showed a bit of urgency and a desire to shoot, but after we equalised it went back to being far too casual.

Still, a good season overall and looking forward to an exciting summer!

As per usual: Saints the better team but not making the most of their superior football.

Predicted 1-1 and that's how it finished.

Not overly disappointed, but I hope Stoke go down next season; their version of football is horrible!!

Now looking forward to an interesting (and hopefully very fruitful) summer transfer window!!!

Shame we couldn't win today, but our play in the final third wasn't good enough to break down a Stoke side that defended well. If one of our AM's had the kind of final pass Lambert does, we'd me a much more dangerous side.

Davis - 7: Not much to do, didn't do anything wrong

Clyne - 6 Defended OK, but not his usual self going forward

Jos: - 5 gave away too many silly free kicks

Fonte - 5 Struggled physically

Shaw - 6 Looked very tired IMO.

Cork - 5 Poor by his standards, bullied off the ball a lot.

Morgan - 7 Usual performance

Rodriguez - 5 passenger today for large parts, still not convinced by him.

Davis - 6 on the ball often, but lacks quality when it matters

Lallana - 7 Good cross lead to the goal

Lambert - 8 MOM looked more like himself today, got the goal and played some good passes.

Subs:

Punch - 6 offered more of a threat for about 5 minutes, then faded

JWP - 6 Did OK

Mayuka - 5 Lots of effort, but disappoints when he gets on the ball.

Undeniably a very successful season - job done. But what a desperately disappointing last quarter of the season.

3 wins, 4 draws and 2 defeats. Some disappointing games, for sure, but think you are exaggerating a bit there mate.

I think desperately disappointing is a bit of an exaggeration to be honest, but it is a bit of a shame that we petered out slightly after the three consecutive wins.

I think he was looking at the last 6 games: 4 draws and 2 defeats.

Personally I think he should only focus on the 2 defeats and conclude it was a disastrous end of season.

looking at how the table was at the end of October.....I'm very pleased.

Survival feels just as satisfying as last season's promotion ......well almost !

.....Adkins did a great job, upto a point - but no arguments with his replacement .

Signings.....a defender or two....and another striker..... and (maybe) an extra keeper ?

Disappointing not to finish the season with a win. At least we didn't lose. Since Reading away we haven't had a great run of results. Maybe we haven't had a rub of the green at times but it definitely has felt like the players lost some confidence or just started to relax a little too soon. As it turns out we would have still been safe on 37 points, if we had not got any more points after that Reading match. There definitely needs to be an improvement next year though. On recent performances I am a little concerned. Hopefully we will have a successful summer in the transfer market and a good soild pre season, so we can start the new season with a bang.

Really need to improve the squad - players like Guly and Fox just don't belong and let us down when called upon. Really need some more Ramirez-esque 'coup' signings, but hopefully that have more impact. Pochettino is ideally suited to bring us the next Michu - no?

That game summed up much of our season, to be fair. And for that reason 14th is about right.

We had all the possession. We had a few decent chances on goal but only scored one. Looked okay defensively for much of the game, yet conceded a simple goal.

A stop/start end to a stop/start season, in a way it never really felt like the season got going fully for me. We played well but had a horrible opening streak of games, which meant it took an age to rack up points and get out of the relegation zone. Then we improved gradually only to change the manager mid way through the season. We've been in lower mid table form ever since ,it's just seemed like we have been in a holding pattern waiting for the break and next season.

Obviously we had to secure safety and that took a while to be rubber stamped, but I don't think anyone at the club really thought relegation was going to happen after those big victories over city and chelsea.

We are in definite need of a summer of rest for the players, and organisation for the manager and squad. I for one am looking forward greatly to next season.

COYS!

I love lambert but he eclipsed by clynes awesome performance. He was amazing going forward. Give him 9.

Don't blame the players bar Lallana being captain ?? How is it lallana's fault for being captain ?? Another bizarre and anti Lallana post.

It seems that the tactics are pretty good. We dominate play, create scoring chances, have loads of possession in their half and don't concede many any more. The problem is that our strikers aren't burying their chances. Lambert, JRod and Lallana have to take responsibility for that. Lambert will probably score fewer and drop deeper as age catches up. I like JRod, but I'm not confident he'll score enough and lallana doesn't score enough from the positions he gets into. Mayuka doesn't seem to be the way forward, so I suppose our attack is where we really need strengthening.

What a shame that we couldn't sign off the campaign with a win, as although it was nice to have nothing to play for apart from league position, we limped over the line with recent results. We should have beaten Stoke today with the possession we had and the chances we created, but having scored first, Stoke were happy to park the bus and we didn't have the creativity to undo their defence. Hopefully we will add that type of player in the Summer and be capable of taking dross like Stoke apart.

Stoke a very ordinary Premier League side, nowhere near competing in the top half of the table, and with a weakened side made Saints look just as ordinary. We had three incredible results against Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea, which raised expectations and without those 9 points we could have gone into this game with relegation already a certainty. Losing at home to QPR was a clear warning that attractive passing football doesn't guarantee a result and we've ended the season with 4 points from the last six games which mirrors our dreadful start to the season. Of course we are all grateful and relieved to have finished 5 points above relegated Wigan but sadly there are two conclusions that can be taken from this season and from today's game: (1) Saints have some very good players; (2) Several of them, who are good and a pleasure to watch play, are not good enough to take this team up a level.

Thought Lallana had another poor game tbh. Things got a bit more lively once Punch came on - should have started.

On the whole though a mediocre display, particularly in the last third of the pitch. Defensively we looked solid, but then Stoke were pretty sh*t when attacking. Clyne MoM, Cork and Shaw honourable mentions. Shaw's slip led to their goal, but that was the only time they got past him.
