dinger Posted 19 May, 2013 Share Posted 19 May, 2013 What an exhibition of bowling. An absolute joy to have watched.

norwaysaint Posted 19 May, 2013 Share Posted 19 May, 2013 All over, somehow we ended up giving them a real kicking after being pretty mediocre up until this session. I have no idea what to expect from the Ashes.
Junction 9 Posted 19 May, 2013 Share Posted 19 May, 2013 Broad can be wonderful at times. Not too worried about the bowling for the Ashes, the batting could be a concern against a decent attack. Still, a win's a win.
dinger Posted 19 May, 2013 Author Share Posted 19 May, 2013 Broad came out and handed them their arses. Broad 7-44, NZ all out for 68. Incredible. As NS says, England were mediocre until then, but a sensational performance from Broad and some top class work in the field has completely stood the test on its head. Junction 9 Posted 26 May, 2013 Share Posted 26 May, 2013 Some great displays again today, Cook ticking along nicely. Declare at 250 and it should be job done.
Shroppie Posted 26 May, 2013 Share Posted 26 May, 2013 Some great displays again today, Cook ticking along nicely. Declare at 250 and it should be job done. Was there. A great day's cricket spoiled only by some moronic Yorkshire spectators and England's failure to put them to the sword in the last hour.
norwaysaint Posted 26 May, 2013 Share Posted 26 May, 2013 How do people feel about the follow on issue? It seems to have divided the commentators. Some think if you have a chance to win, you should take it there and then, others pointing towards the value of letting the batsmen have a decent innings in a match they can't lose. I can't help but feel you should always look to destroy the other team if you get the chance. Compton's failed again anyway, he doesn't fill you with confidence for the Ashes. How many did Cook get while Compton ground out his 7 runs? About 60 or 70?

Of course it pretty much guarantees we can't lose the series, but it did seem a negative approach.
Junction 9 Posted 27 May, 2013 Share Posted 27 May, 2013 Looking at tomorrow's weather forecast it seems a strange choice not to enforce the follow on. Declared too late as well.

How many did Cook get while Compton ground out his 7 runs? About 60 or 70? Yeah, I suppose as a captain you've got to let someone like Compton have another chance, which I suppose is a reason not to enforce the follow-on. He's blown that chance though, unfortunately. I'd be inclined to start with Root opening against the Aussies, if KP is fit again, drop Compton altogether; he doesn't look ready. Generally speaking I'd take the follow-on and press the advantage and I was disappointed England didn't do that. As J9 says, the declaration was crazily late. NZ haven't a chance of chasing 300, let alone 400, but the weather could prevent a result. Very strange decisions, both of those. I'm not going to be too critical though; England have been excellent in this test, a real bank holiday treat.
