Head Coach Peter Taylor has selected the 18-year-old in his initial 35-man party for the finals, which take place in Turkey through June and July.

Ward-Prowse will initially join up with the squad on Monday for a four-day training camp in Cheshire.

The 35 will then reconvene at St George's Park at the start of June, with the squad will being trimmed down to 21 players on Friday 7th June before the finals kick off two weeks later.

James has impressed for Southampton's First Team this season, making his 18th appearance of the season when he stepped off the bench to set up the equaliser at Sunderland last weekend.

He was also named as the club's 2012-13 Scholar of the Season at our Official Player Awards Dinner earlier this week in recognition of his excellent year.

Having been capped at under-17 level prior to this season, the midfielder moved into England's Under-19 squad and made his debut for Noel Blake's side last September.

Overall, he has appeared for the Under-19s on four occasions, the most recent of which saw him named as captain for a friendly win over Turkey in March.

His progress now sees him provisionally picked for the World Cup, which occurs on a bi-annual basis and involves 24 teams from six confederations.

England have been drawn in Group E, along with Chile, Egypt and Iraq. The winners and runners-up from the six groups – as well as the best four third-placed teams – will qualify for the round of 16.

The Young Lions' group schedule is as follows:

Wednesday 23rd June 2013, 7pm BST kick off

England U20s vs Iraq U20s – Akdeniz University Stadium, Antalya

Saturday 26th June 2013, 4pm BST kick off

Chile U20s vs England U20s – Akdeniz University Stadium, Antalya

Tuesday 29th June 2013, 7pm BST kick off

Egypt U20s vs England U20s – Atatürk Stadium, Bursa

The knockout stage will then take place from 2nd July onwards, with the eventual final being staged at Galatasary's Ali Sami Yen Arena in Istanbul on 13th July.
