He was a very good player, not a great player. Was that tier below the top, top players of his generation. But unlike a lot of players that play for England he was fully commited and deserved to be captain. His performances against Greece where he single handedly dragged the team into the finals was the finest display by an Engalnd player in a generation. And by all accounts he's a top guy as well.

In my lifetime (thus far obviously) he is by far the best England captain there has been.

He dragged the team along by the scruff of the neck, carried them for about 5 years. I grew up idolising him, I'm genuinely gutted, feels like that last piece of my childhood has died.

That said, I am 24, probably about time I let go.

Sob.

I agree with all of that. I also thought he was overly criticised for not being as good as his hype. I never understood why that would be a reason to criticise him. He was always a very hard working, committed player, the sort we complain we don't have more of, but was complained about for not being more gifted. I don't think he ever claimed to be anything he wasn't.

Not an all rounder, but up there with the best in the world at the things he could do. To top it all he seemed an honourable and hardworking man, someone you could respect.

He most certainly was an all-rounder. His texting skills were second to none.

Waddle sounds a bit stupid there. He's right in all the comments about his attributes but then saying he wouldn't be in the top 1000?! Top 10 no. Top 20 probably not, but come on, top 50 easily. Why obsess about what a player CAN'T do? He had great technique, passing, crossing and set pieces. One of the best in the world for that. So clearly 'world class'. People get so funny about that label, without even defining it. Surely if you're an international and play for top clubs while proving you're one of the best at any attribute, you're world class? It's as if there's only ever allowed to be 2 or 3 'world class' footballers! I'd say anyone within the top 10 or so players in their position would be.

Utterly ridiculous comment. I agree, not top 10/20 but defo 50.

Smacks to me of someone bitter being bitter, possibly Waddle was a better player, but had far more success and far less adulation than Becks.

He played for one of the best United teams (99) a very good Real Madrid team, and was the best passer and set piece taker for both. To say he wasn't a world class player is silly.

So many try to belittle him as a footballer because of what else he became, also a mark of how intelligent the guy actually is.
