For me Maloney has been a stand out player in the back end of the season. Despite Wigan's relegation to The Championship he has yet again been a key figure in the common turn of the year revival for Wigan.

He has made 40 appearances this season scoring 7 goals and notching 10 assists. Not a great return in hindsight but considering their low position in the table its not the worst return. Add to this his ability from set pieces; we've seen a fantastic free kick tonight against Arsenal in a must win game as well as a similar finish with the last kick of the game away to QPR.

For me Saints real pitfall this season has been delivery not only in open play but from dead ball situations and he is the type of player i'd like to see us bring in. A tenacious tricky attacking midfielder who in my eyes slots in well in front of Morgan and Cork. Obviously similar to the rotation depending on the opponent, ie Ramirez/Davis he is a step up from Davis.

What opinion have you got on him? I know its unlikely MP would go for a player like him as he is more likely to dip into the European market due to his knowledge in La Liga etc but I think he would be a valuable asset to the team and bring the qualities we are currently lacking in.

Would rather take James McCarthy but it looks like he'll be heading to a top 5 club.

He's a good player, but I'm not sure he's someone we really need. Very similar playing style to Davis, Cork and Morgan. We need someone with a bit of pace and power through the middle, if we add anyone that is. Wouldn't say CM is a priority position for us as it stands.

Players I'd be happy if we signed from the relegated clubs;

Maloney, Kone, McManaman, Samba. Apart from that maybe take a chance on Taarabt and Alex Pearce, who I feel haven't fulfilled their potential.

For those saying we don't need players in Maloneys position...we play 3 AMs basically, and have Ramirez, Lallana, Davis, Puncheon and Rodriguez who challenge for them. Beyond them it's the likes of De Ridder.

I can't see us going for anyone of the relegated players though, doesn't seem like Pochettinos style for some reason.

Samba, never ever for that price. He would have to cut his wages with 70% to be interesting.....

Remy, the only obvious for me.

Mcmanaman perhaps but dont know if a good 10-game stint is enough to convince me, he´s been great those games though.....for the right price yes but having thought about it I think he will be overpriced this summer.....

Samba was excellent at Blackburn. He's certainly better than any of our CBs.

Is he though? When has he ever been £15m worth of CB?

He's decent, but we'd have to completely break the bank to sign him, and he's not worth that.

I never said he was, and I don't think we would have to break the bank. I would only be happy about signing him for £4-6million and on a lot lower wages than has been reported.

Also, he didn't take Blackburn down, he left them well before the end of the season.

I've said this before, I'll say it again.

Last season Samba played for Blackburn, who leaked goals and were relegated.

This season he played for QPR, who leaked goals and were relegated.

Sounds like the CV of a top drawer player to me.

Plus, he is on £100k p/w. No ta.

Although he had a bit of a shocker last night, I've always rated Scharner. He's pretty versatile and is a good old pro, the type I think you need round the club as a squad man. Not going to happen as he doesn't fit the profile we seem to go for. People like samba , Remy, waste of time. One from qpr , is Townsend , i know he's a spurs player, but maybe if they make champions league they may go up a level in terms of signings and he becomes surplus. Don't see anyone at Reading. I would take Maloney any day.

One ex Wigan guy I would take a punt on is Hugo Rodallega, I think he'd fit into our style and I jol isn't getting the best out if him at Fulham.

Iquite like Wigan's left back Espinoza. Proper duracel bunny. Doesn't stop running all day long. Seems more interested in attacking than defending a bit like Luke Shaw. Might be a good option at left back as back up to LS. Pretty sure he's back up at Wigan when Figueroa is fit.

As a general rule of thumb, you wouldn't take any player from a relegated team.

There will be exceptions to that rule, but there is a reason that a team were relegated, and it's because the players weren't good enough.

I may be wrong, but other than Crouch, I don't remember too many clubs banging down the door for our players when we were relegated in 2005.

Of all the players from all three relegated teams, Remy would be the only one you would really want.

Good, relevant points about Samba above who because of his stature, sticks out like a sore thumb when he has a good game, but equally stands out like a baboon's arse when he has a bad one.

Actual fact, Steve Grant once went out with a girl who, soon after they split up, went out with a Scottish bloke who claimed to have played as an attacking midfielder for Celtic in the 2003 UEFA Cup Final and ruined his ligaments and had to retire.

I googled the match, and there were only 2 Scottish players in the squad I didn't recognise at the time, only one of whom played and was an attacking midfielder. So the bloke in question was pretending to be Shaun Maloney. Why the hell would you do that, in 2006 when it was so easy to disprove ? :D

To inform the debate... By the end of the Transfer Window after relegation we had sold :

Tessem (Lyn Oslo - Undisc)

Phillips (£1m to Villa),

Yahia (St Etienne - Undisc)

Telfer (£200k to Celtic)

Crouch (£7m to Liverpool)

Nilsson (Panathiaikos - Undisc)

Bernard (Rangers - Undisc)

By the end of the following window we'd also sold the following :

Blayney (Doncaster £50k)

Niemi (Fulham - Est £1m)

Quashie (WBA £1.2m)

plus Van Damme went after a year out on loan to Anderlecht.

Everyone else was a free, inc Anders, Delap, Fernandes, McCann, Ormerod, and we'd already sold Beattie the previous season.
