the saint in winchester Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22512744 I'm a 'promising pedant' according to this, but please don't tell the police!
SNSUN Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 I strive to write English perfectly, I prided myself on it at school and was always top of the class in English, but I hate to say I did that quiz, and only got 6/10. Ergo I'm not as talented as I thought, and as a result I'm not going concern myself with comma's in the right place anymore. :-)
Tokyo-Saint Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 I ain't never made no mistakes with ma English. Ill give it a go.
ecuk268 Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 "Pedantic grammar" is a phrase used as an adjective and should be hyphenated.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 Lols 5 out of 10, nearly same a SNSUN and I don't give a **** about gandmas. Bear you are up! Post your humiliating results below.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 Did I say 5 out of 10? I meant 9 out of 10. The only one I got wrong was about Churchill. How do I no what grammma points **** off a dumb insurance dog?
ant Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 Yep, I got 8 out of 10 too. It's not all about application though, at least a couple of the questions rely upon a knowledge of grammatical terminology (which isn't strictly required in order to write perfect English).

Did you have to do it 3 times like bear did? Or was it first go?

Tokyo-Saint Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 i got done cos i never knew hilary was dude - these is the sort of informations i'm always finding out too late! i also didn't know what gerunds is! I do now tho #educationbear Lol, I failed that one too! How you supposed to know without seeing her? It's like blind date Bangkok, you pay your money, you take your chances.
Bearsy Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 i thought b!tch sounded like chick, i actually thought it might be someone i know. But then i hedged bets and said impossible to know without checking b!tches junk. Thinking bout it I still think impossible to know cos the pimp trying to lay hilary on me could easily be lies. I understand this happens sometimes yo!
ericofarabia Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 LOL ... 2/10, but I blame the bottle of wine that I have just consumed prior to the test!! Re Q3 - Did Ben / DannySFC write it? No wonder I can't keep up with his posts - I'm just plain thick :-(
Tokyo-Saint Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 Are there actually dudes out there called Hillary? I thought it was a trick question, like "do you want to meet my mate, she is blonde, has big tits and a great personality". I put the key bit in bold for you less experienced in trick questions.
bridge too far Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 Are there actually dudes out there called Hillary? Hilary Benn, the MP
Hamilton Saint Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 A lot of the sentences in that quiz were lacking full stops! I consider myself a pedant, but they called me a "grammar guru", because I got 8/10.

Sir Edmund?
Tokyo-Saint Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 Alright, alright there are a couple of them and that Hillary dude off Dragons Den but the question remains the same, would you bone any of them trusting it was ok cause of a comma or full stop or whatever? No.
norwaysaint Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 8 out of 10 Some of those questions, such as the last one, test your vocabulary, rather than you're ability to use grammar correctly. I would say most people could see why the sentence was wrong and could successfully rephrase it, showing excellent grammar, despite not knowing what "misplaced modifier" means.
SNSUN Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 Did you have to do it 3 times like bear did? Or was it first go? Ha! Though you think you would only need two bashes to get a ten...
Tokyo-Saint Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 Ha! Though you think you would only need two bashes to get a ten... Sorry, I couldn't understand your grammas there. Something about bear being dumb and not having a memory right?
buctootim Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 Ha! Though you think you would only need two bashes to get a ten... I had two bashes instead of doing the quiz.
tony13579 Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 Stuff the grammar police. Can any of these jumped up gobby little squirts do anything else with their brain? They are usually unable to put a shelf up or assemble even the simplest IKEA kit... Dyslexics rule! I have met too many of these prats in my life.
Shroppie Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 8/10. Grammar guru . But disappointed I didn't get 10.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 Sat through the new grammar test today- wasn't particularly challenging, even for 10 & 11 year olds.
Whitey Grandad Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 9/10 I don't like the construction of number three, which is poorly phrased with or without the comma. I also disagree with the one about the chair. 'I was sat in the chair' is perfectly correct in a wider context, e.g. 'When I was very young my mother took me to the dentist and I was sat in the chair'.
The9 Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22512744 I'm a 'promising pedant' according to this, but please don't tell the police! As someone who regularly corrects people on their spelling and grammar (to a point), I can only put my 7/10 down to a lack of familiarity with some of the terminology and not actually being taught much grammar in that way. I also want to take issue with the implication of the comma in the question regarding brother/s and sister. Agree re: "sat in the chair" as well, though I got it right anyway.

They are usually unable to put a shelf up or assemble even the simplest IKEA kit... Dyslexics rule! I have met too many of these prats in my life. FWIW your sentence construction there wouldn't give many people problems. It's the people who can't construct a sentence without ambiguities, leaving me having to deconstruct it for 5 minutes, that I have a problem with.

Sorry to be a pedant, but shouldn't that be 'dyslexics lure'?
Saint Martini Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 7/10 Not bad considering I'm better at two other languages
badgerx16 Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 9/10. Maybe my time at KES wasn't completely wasted.
kpturner Posted 14 May, 2013 Posted 14 May, 2013 9/10 - fooked up number 10. Gutted Now wearing horse hair shirt and cheering on Wigan.
eurosaint Posted 15 May, 2013 Posted 15 May, 2013 8/10 - never heard of a f#cking gerund or a modifier ! I can live with most things but 'loose' instead of 'lose', 'should of' instead of 'should have' and 'are' instead of 'our' really drive me mad !!!

tony13579 Posted 15 May, 2013 Posted 15 May, 2013 I am 96th percentile at problem solving 6th percentile at spelling. I can program in hexadecimal I can design and mend most things I have dreadful facial recognition skills However my work is written off by most academics who read my work with the red pen in hand! People who can't read through a sentence where the wrong two,to or too is used. Some of them are more disabled than me!
Tokyo-Saint Posted 15 May, 2013 Posted 15 May, 2013 I think the OP was well out of order criticising you Tony. I'll have a word.
Dr. Kucho Posted 15 May, 2013 Posted 15 May, 2013 4/10 Mind you I was educated in another language. Would like to do a course to improve my grammar during the summer, if work allows me to.
