We lack pace down the wing without him. With both Davis and Lallana in attacking midfield positions we become very narrow and predictable. I also think it is one of the reasons Ricky hasn't scored from open play for a while.

It is one of the decisions I don't really get with Pochettino. Why doesn't he get a decent chance? Its for all to see we're very ineffective at the moment and Puncheon has been rather good at finishing his chances.

PS: Tell me what our top goal scorer did today to cover himself in glory? Poor display again from Lambert to be fair - offered no threat.

Put the ball through to Ward-Prowse who crossed to find Puncheon, who scored the goal. He then hit a nice volley near the end which forced a decent save out of Mignolet. We can't rely on Rickie all the time, the last few games has showed that but he didn't have a bad game today. Lallana on the other hand has been a poor captain and a poor performer over the last few weeks.

Puncheon deserves to get a start next week vs Stoke. But lets be positive, safety secured!

Lallana 3 goals this season and hardly any from last season. Bit different to rickie scoring 14 goals but to be fair thats 10 games without a goal from open play from rickie and think we need someone quick and strong up there as j rod's not on form either. J rod isnt strong enough to lead the line on his own.

.or looking at it another way....it's the typical " gopal-drought syndrome " from our two main strikers.....

NEITHER Lambert or Jay Rod have scored in the last 5 games :scared:

Hope they get on the scoresheet next weekend otherwise they'll be goinmg into next season with everyone counting their goalless games...

I like Adam, Morgan, Jack Cork, Steven Davis... (oh, and that Uruguayan fellow ..they're good in midfield - in the right combination..but they've only managed about a dozen goals between them all season.

we need more goals from them. Only Puncheon has been a point-saver several times....

Lallana is too slow and ploddy at the moment, tries 1 pass too many when it's easier to have a pop. Or goes backwards in a circle, as everyone has caught up with him.

Puncheon has a bit of pace, a bit of strength, and can actually go past a player or 2. Opens the entire final third up for us.

It really does show what a difference pace in the final third can make to a team. We looked so much more progressive when he was on the pitch.

Pochettino addressed this in the post match interview. Said that Punch had been having a personal issue or something lately. Presumably something to do with his new baby?

Agreed that we looked much better going forward, when he was in the team earlier and again today. Although his form also dropped off a bit, after he signed his new contract ;)

Many of our other midfielders seem afraid to try to beat a man and take a shot.

Without anything on which to base this, my hunch is that Pochettino demands total commitment to things being done his way - he earned the nickname "The Sheriff" for a reason. Puncheon is more an individualist, and that's caused him problems almost throughout his career. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he's run afoul of The Sheriff at some point, possibly through an inability or unwillingness to maintain his place in Pochettino's team shape. Who knows?

Yes, I think we look much better with Puncheon in the team and with him and Clyne working together down the right, but I'm quite willing to accept that Pochettino has good reasons for not starting him.

What are the personal "issues" poch alluded to?

Commentator during the Spurs game mentioned he'd been up all night for the birth of his child, could be related to that ? None of our business really though.

Well I agree if it is that - but the translation suggested otherwise. However. It is just a translation done in front of a mike so it's open to misunderstanding.

I don't think it explains the fact that he's seldom been one of MP's first choices since Day One.

He gave him a new contract ffs so he cant hate him too much.

Punch is obviously part of his future plans and coming on to score the goal that ( practically ) guarantee's another season in the bigtime wont do his chances any harm.

I think we're a better attacking unit with Puncheon playing, the supply isn't good enough from Lallana at the moment.

Yes but you have to say that time and again when Punch starts a game he is ineffective too - in fact he can 'very' so when he starts. Having said that he scoring rate does stack up considering his playing time I would imagine.... We do lack players who can turn a situation into a chance and then have the tenacity to shoot with a credible shot and Punch does tend to be quite good at that when he has the bit between his teeth. When he doesn't however - well ......we are a bit stuffed..

Why hasn't he been playing every week? He was one of the first names on the teamsheet under Adkins, now lucky if he gets on the pitch!

Is much more effective than Lallana for us.

I've always been in favour of " horses for courses " (I know-wrong sport).... but I'd change out players according to the opposition / home -away).

Cork, Ramirez and Lallana always seem to look better in home games, whereas JP has that extra bit of aggression necessary in away fixtures.

Three of his goals were a key factor in away games. The first at QPR, the equaliser at Chelsea.. and of course v.Sunderland. He also earned us all 3 points in the home game v.Reading.

If there were an award the the most under-rated player of the season ...he'd get my vote.

Agree with that bit Zurich.

Despite being " Saints-fit " we had a lot of possession in early season games (the Adkins part)... but always seemed to want to make the " extra pass" instead of shooting on sight .

Pochettino upped the tempo of our game, but even that has taken a toll on some players in recent games after a long season.

I know some critics may say some " haven't played games " , but when the squad trains hard all week, they aren't sitting on the bench then.. some other players might be " super-fit " yet still not get into the game.

It's Puncheon confidence we're really missing lately, he seems to be the only one (other than Lambert and Rodriguez) who wants to actually try and get past players and have a pop. Our best midfielder this season other than Morgan.
