No cup success, just the constant grind of PL safety

or

Win a major cup (eg the FA cup) but go down (ie what might possibly happen to Wigan)

Of course I wouldn't dare chance another relegation especially seeing how recently relegated clubs have struggled to come right back up as soon as they would have liked. However, seeing Wigan celebrate their FA cup victory made feel a slight tinge of jealousy as we have not won a major cup in recent times, at least not in my lifetime (the paint trophy does not really count, does it) So it made me think about the above question and wonder what you guys think.

p.s Ignore the scenario of both staying up AND winning a major cup as this is more of a question of which 'success' you prefer.

Prem safety until were a top 8 side then give up a top 8 spot finish 17th and have a FA Cup win, i like the league cup dont get me wrong but the magic of the FA Cup is something i like and always falls around my bday like it did in 2003.

Under MP and NC were never go down if we stay up this season which we should with at least a point at Sunderland today ;)

Where we're going, right now, I'd take the Premier League safety, especially as the money being pumped into the top league, well managed, could buy players we could only dream about in the nPC. But a cup win would be fantastic, if only the relegation didn't come with it!

Premier League for me all day long. I don't really think I'd find it a "constant grind".

As others have suggested, it's not really a sensible question - the longer we are in the Premier League, the better our chances of winning a Cup.

You play football to win stuff, not just the odd game but something tangible like a trophy, otherwise what's the point? Cup all day long.

Absolutely, you play to win, so choosing relegation is a sure fire way to *not* win games. For me football is about every Saturday afternoon and competing against the best teams possible. Also, having been through administration and far too many arsehole owners and Chairmen, anything that can ensure a secure future gets my vote.

It shows how sh*te football has become when people would take finishing 17th in the league over winning a trophy.

Exactly this. After the brilliant roller coaster ride we had to League 1 and back (which I wouldn't swap for anything) I'm stunned there are still people who'd be happy to see us plod along in the lower reaches of the PL for all time and never win a thing.

History and memories are, of course, really important in football. But hope for the future is more important still as far as I'm concerned.

For every season in which we're in the Premiership and our squad is as good or better than it is at present, we will be in with an okay-ish chance of winning a Cup each year (or perhaps one day qualifying for Europe via the league).

I appreciate that the OP is positing some sort of world in which we're logically prohibited from winning any silverware if we stay up in the top flight, but that's pretty hard to get your head round.

I wouldn't swap what we have done since 2008 for Pompey's cup win and subsequent collapse.

To take the question one (small) step further, would you prefer to win the FA Cup in 2015 and then be liquidated in 2016 or to be in the top flight for the rest of your life and never win a trophy? If silverware is all that counts, I'd guess you'd pick the former. But I wouldn't.

I'd take the liquidation route. Knowing you're doing nothing but making up the numbers for all time is utterly pointless for me. Wimbledon lost their club, formed a new one and got back to the football league within ten years. All from a club who often got gates in the tope league lower than 10,000. No reason that Saints couldn't do exactly the same and onward to the top division within 10-15 years; much less than a lifetime and a cup pt remember.

Fair enough. It's all about opinions.

I loved the lower league tour and the JPT win (and even, in retrospect, the trauma of slipping down the divisions). But having done it, I am not keen on repeating it really (and not too keen on starting again in Division 14)

It's that kind of thinking that has seen the Skates where they are whilst many are still unapologetic for their Cup win despite the cost and debts they never intended to pay.

Saints fans seem to be very critical of it usually. Is this widespread hypocrisy then ?

Not really. Just a bit of a daft question in the first place. "Would you rather Saints won nothing for your whole life, or won a cup but then got demoted 15 leagues for it?" is the same question, for which I'd say yes.

Of course if you asked "Would you rather stay in the PL and win nothing, or win a cup, defraud local business and charities, rip off all and sundry and push the rules to very limit, all the while becoming a national luaghing stock and derided within the world of football and its public", then I think the repsonse might be different.

Fair enough. Having lived through the 1980s Newport County experience of promotion to tier 3, a Welsh Cup win and run to the European Cup Winners' Cup Quarter Finals, then a collapse to miss out on promotion whilst top of tier 3 at Easter, followed by two last place relegations out of the Football League and liquidation when bottom of the Conference, then reforming and taking 25 years to get back to the Football League, I think honestly I'd take "not winning anything" - although admittedly they won quite a lot of leagues on the way back anyway.
