benjii Posted 2 December, 2008 Share Posted 2 December, 2008 http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/columnists/gabriele_marcotti/article5263546.ece Antonio Cassano. Saw him play live this season and he was absolutely fantastic. One of the best individual performances I've ever seen. Different type of player to Matty but seems to have a similar outlook. Loves being the big fish in the small pond. “What is truly important is being happy now. I know I haven’t given 100 per cent physically or mentally to this game. At best, I gave 50 per cent. Maybe a tiny bit more in the good years. But so what? Thanks to my talent, I live like a king, I play football and I have a great time. If I had wanted to give 100 per cent, I would have stayed at Real Madrid, sacrificed lots of things, done my very best and I probably would have succeeded. Instead, I’m here at Sampdoria and I love it.” Funnily enough I think our national team, and the country in general, would actually benefit from adopting a bit more of this attitude. Life is for living!
Colinjb Posted 2 December, 2008 Share Posted 2 December, 2008 He had to move to a 'big' club to realise this though. Not a bad comparison mind, as a direct comparison though I always prefer Roberto Baggio myself.

TopGun Posted 2 December, 2008 Share Posted 2 December, 2008 Sounds like a **** to me. Not sure MLT would have ever said anything like that.

James_O_Mac Posted 2 December, 2008 Share Posted 2 December, 2008 Upon reading that article and looking on wikipedia, i reckon the autobiography would be a good buy! Can't fault him for honesty
benjii Posted 2 December, 2008 Author Share Posted 2 December, 2008 Upon reading that article and looking on wikipedia, i reckon the autobiography would be a good buy! Can't fault him for honesty Certainly seems likely to raise a chuckle. Not sure if there's an English translation available though... the Italian one would be of very little use to me! revolution saint Posted 2 December, 2008 Share Posted 2 December, 2008 That's a good article. Not sure about comparisons with MLT as I can't really recall seeing him (Cassono) play, and I don't think MLT would ever feign injury or refuse to play. The philosophy might be right though. It's refreshing to hear a footballer talk about enjoying the game even if, and maybe because, he doesn't push himself too hard. He comes across as pretty ordinary and the kind of bloke you could have a pint with. He's probably a throwback to a lot of the players around in the 70's and that's no bad thing. Sadly I can't really remember that era but it sounds a lot more fun than the robot footballers with zero personality and bank balances longer than telephone numbers that we get these days. You'd probably end up getting glassed after about 5 minutes!!
AndyNorthernSaints Posted 3 December, 2008 Share Posted 3 December, 2008 I'm glad he has stayed with Sampdoria.
