Not if Wigan win by a couple of very high margins.
If Wigan beat Villa by a very high margin, that's all the better for us surely? Villas goal difference would be even worse.
Posted
That would relegate Villa.

Fair point. So, a draw would see us virtually safe if not mathematically safe. Good. It would be nice to win against Sunderland and sort the matter ourselves without relying on others.

Thats right, Michael Owen is going to come back and haunt us by scoring 13 times on his farewell appearance. Another point from today is that Stoke are now safe, hopefully that means they will be on the beach next Sunday.

Yep they're going to score more goals next sunday than they have away from home all season.

The point is that drawing against Sunderland will "sort it ourselves", barring an absolutely unfathomable freak result breaking a number of records.

So if Wigan beat Arsenal 15-0

We lose to Stoke 20-0

Then Wigan beat Villa 1-0

We are down!

Oh providing Sunderland, Norwich and Newcastle get appoint

A draw against Sunderland would not leave us relying on others. We would just need to rely on ourselves not to lose by more than 12-0 at home to Stoke. Still think we need 41-43 points?

I am sorry but the FA Cup final should be on BBC 3pm, and should be when the curtain comes down on the season.

The neutral should be able to enjoy it knowing their own clubs plight. How can Wigan focus on the cup final when they have 2 even more important 'cup finals' coming up in the next week.

Wigan will only get 38 points, or if they are really lucky 39, which mean for us 39 is enough, but for Wigan not!

+1.

the real top English scorer would be the one who hasn't a shedload of penalties in his total. Defoe or Walcott probably.

We've only had 2 penalties this season, as far as I can recall. Villa home and Villa away. So 12 of Lambert's goals are from open play or free kicks.

Fulham away.

Cup final has rarely been the last game of the season. You obviously need to jump in your TARDIS qnd go back to the 60s

It would also be an all-time record score in the Football League/Premier League (currently stands at 12) and beat the current away record by 4. I'm just checking the odds to see what I will get to soften the blow.

39 is enough for Wigan if any of Sunderland, Norwich and Newcastle lose all their remaining games. Or quite possibly if Norwich or Newcastle pick up just one point from their remaining two games.

I agree that 39 points is almost certainly enough for Saints to stay ahead of Wigan, especially considering goal difference. In fact, it's likely that we'd have been safe on just 38 points, which would mean (in retrospect) that we confirmed our survival on April 13th with our 1-1 draw against West Ham!

When did it stop being the last game of the season? I always had it in my mind from growing up that it was the finale to the season. And that only recently it stopped being so.

start with a double; Saints to be relegated and Wigan to be the highest scorers in the PL n that day. Should get you around 8000/1,

This. You could enjoy the lead up to the 3pm kickoff even if your team wasn't playing and then pick a team for the match safe in the knowledge that the season was done and dusted and injuries/suspensions etc would not effect the plight of your own club. Used to be a friends and family occasion like the superbowl over here where you all get together and cheer on a team just for fun. Now I barely notice when it is and it if I do it usually turns out to be a rather drab affair.

Used to be more magical when it was the last game. But since they have messed about with the time slots and played the semi-finals at Wembley added to the fact the BBC coverage was far superior, then know wonder the FA Cup has become a booby prize.

Not to mention Manure's decision many years ago to exclude themselves just devalued the competition all the more.

Think you've got yourself a bit confused on this one, fella. A bit of research shows the FA Cup final was typically held after the league season, right up until 2010 when it changed.

Cup final will go back to being the last regular game from next year though for at least 3 seasons. Don't know about playoffs though.

No need to apologies, most people would agree.

I feel pretty content in the knowledge that my £10 bet on Saints to be relegated put on while Villa were beating Sunderland last week is going down the tubes. I never win bets. I once bet on 2 horses in the same Grand National and both were put down. I haven't bet on the National since.

That to me was the beginning of the changes for me. Just not the same with the semi's being there and the final. Then its the change in time and not having the choice of channels to watch it on. All diminishes it a bit for me.

Ah yes. 3 then. We've certainly not been awarded as many pens as in past recent seasons.

Unlike Chelsea who've had 11 I think; half of Lampard's goals this season must be from penalties. Guess Hazard gets fouled a lot.

The weekend everyone is fawning over fergy and his legacy, the impact of that decision can't be underestimated. Disrespect of the highest order.

True it was a witches brew of self interest and the likes of the FA and FIFA were equally complicit. But that doesn't exonerate United -and by extension Fergy who called the shots on most major decisions.

I'm pretty sure they were convinced not to take part by the FA, and instead enter in the newly formed Club World Championship?

After all is said and done, the Chelsea win suits us best as we can finish above Villa and make the final table look more respectable. If we don't win at least one of these last two games we would have failed to win any of the last 6 games making the end of the season look almost as bad as the beginning. We are better than that and must win at least one more game if not both. The Villa result against Chelsea means our club can earn more prize money.

Correct. The FA were sucking up to FIFA at the time to get the 2006 World Cup. United were on holiday out there, remember lots of pics in the papers of their players shopping and sunbathing.

Agreed. 3pm should have been non-negotiable.

Prefer it were on BBC.

The draw should be on a Monday lunchtime as well, rather than ITV making it a 'feature' to run on the lines of a reality tv vote ,with a couple of 'has beens' or B-rate celebs making the draw to 'Impress' us all. Surprised they don't rebrand it as 'Football's got talent' or 'FA Cup Factor' or such sh!t.

When did it stop being the last game of the season? I always had it in my mind from growing up that it was the finale to the season. And that only recently it stopped being so.

It stopped when the game accepted the big ££ - in 2010 - when the Premier League insisted they should be the ultimate attraction of the season, and the Cup final was shoed in between routine fixtures.

And of course its lost a bit of appeal as live games are regularly seen on the box now.

Isn't it because of the Champions League final this year?

Its not really a big deal if they missed one season anyway. Far bigger reasons for the FA Cup becoming some what devalued.
