Colinjb Posted 2 December, 2008 Share Posted 2 December, 2008 (edited) I personally believe Rebecca Adlington should win, just her unbridled joy at winning was so wonderful. Hoy would also be a worthy winner but I suspect Hamilton will get the most votes. Hamilton had a stunning year but 'personality?' No, the modest 19 year old from Mansfield is for me. If Redknapp wins I will commit suicide. Had he stayed at Skatesmouth I would imagine he would have had a better chance. Hamilton is a "normal guy from Stevenage" when it suits him, and runs aways from the country the moment he might have to give some of his massive fortune back. Nellie Posted 2 December, 2008 Share Posted 2 December, 2008 Chris Hoy should win, but I suspect that he will be sharing his votes with the other Olympians, so Hamilton will win. It is a strong lineup this year and I'd be happy if any of them won, excluding Hamilton, Murray or Ohuruogu. Can't believe she has made it to the shortlist after taking the British Olympic Association to the Court of Arbitration fo Sport.

Mark Cavendish is a more worthy nominee with his Tour de France exploits this year. Also Rebecca Romero a more worthy nominee than Victoria Pendlington ? Seeing that Victoria has won multi world titles as well as the Olmpic gold, I think not.

Arizona Posted 2 December, 2008 Share Posted 2 December, 2008 Think Hamilton will get it and does deserve it IMO. That based on the assumption that Sports Personality of the Year has nothing to do with personality, an area where Hamilton falls somewhat short. RE: Switzerland. Most top earning F1 drivers live in tax havens. Most dotted around Switerland or Monaco and Nigel Mansell on er... the Isle of Mann. No reason to hate Hamilton in particular and none of you can honnestly say you wouldn't do the same.

Seeing that Victoria has won multi world titles as well as the Olmpic gold, I think not. I agree with what you say about Wiggins, and about Cavendish. But I think Romero dceserves to be there (perhaps in the top 3 although probably not), because of her transition from winning a medal in Rowing at Athens to being and olympic cycling champion. Not many people have done thatin history! Personally I think Ben Ainsle deserves a mention. He's achevied just about everything possible in his sport, not just over the last year but over the last 12 years. Steve Redgrave didn't win it because of his acheivements over 1 year, but because of them over 16 years, so why shouldn't Ben Ainsle. Having said that, he won't win simply because how low profile Sailing is.

My point is it's common for F1 driver to live abroad because they earn so much. I don't see why that should count against him when it comes to SPOTY. Alonso lived in Oxford during his entire first stint at Renault and only purchased a property in Switzerland when he moved to McLaren. He now spends his time shared between the UK, Switzerland and his native Spain. Yes, plenty of drivers have moved to tax havens over the years but certainly not all, and even the three foreigners mentioned above pay all of their taxes to our Government. Thedelldays Posted 2 December, 2008 Share Posted 2 December, 2008 being a very good driver is clearly a huge factor in winning the F1 championship... they say the rain is a good leveller with respect to the cars and hamilton is by far the best in the business in that respect...added to the fact he actually won the competition in his second year is bloody brilliant

St Landrew Posted 3 December, 2008 Share Posted 3 December, 2008 Makes no sense to nominate Bradley Wiggins.....yeah he had an amazing Olympics but out shadowed by Chris Hoy so has no chance of winning. Mark Cavendish is a more worthy nominee with his Tour de France exploits this year. Also Rebecca Romero a more worthy nominee than Victoria Pendleton ? Seeing that Victoria has won multi world titles as well as the Olmpic gold, I think not. And in the fast-flying world of our Olympic Champion Cyclists, who was the only biker to let things slip a tiny bit..? Yes, Bradley Wiggins. With his partner Mark Cavendish, he came 9th in their event, and Wiggins was clearly the weaker partner. Of course, by then, he'd got his 2 gold medals in his other events. Mark Cavendish came away from the Velodrome with not a single medal. The only Team GB rider to do so. He was p!ssed off, and rightly so, as the pair were the favourites [of course] and Wiggins wasn't even sorry. I think Rebecca Romero is a worthy candidate [although only as much as Victoria Pendleton], as she is a Champion in 2 totally unrelated sports. And she's thinking of changing to another for the next Olympics. Some things are obviously just not hard enough for some people. The rest are worthy, with one exception. What on earth has Harry Redknapp done that is extra, extra special..? Manager of a FA Cup winning team..? Like him or loathe him - sorry, but in my book that isn't enough. His inclusion devalues the others' achievements. Manage a World Cup winning team, and you're there on merit. Or manage a much lower or non-league team to a major all-league participating Cup, and maybe so.
