Suhari Posted 10 May, 2013 Share Posted 10 May, 2013 Redecorating. The skirting boards are covered in about 30 years of chipped, repainted (badly) **** paint. Want to get them back to wood (or as close as I can) and paint with hard-wearing gloss or satin (don't care which - as long as it will last). Would rather strip chemically: heat guns are a pain in the arse. Looking for advice on: Which stripper to use Which paint to finish with What'd reckon? scotty Posted 10 May, 2013 Share Posted 10 May, 2013 If you're completely redecorating, why not just replace them and varnish the new ones? Probably easier than farting around stripping the old ones.
BadgerBadger Posted 10 May, 2013 Share Posted 10 May, 2013 Nitromors will do it but it'll be a messy and laborios job, you could get a bad ass belt sander and give them a good sanding until they're flat and even and then paint or replace the lot with new stuff which is a faily simple job. Saint-scooby Posted 10 May, 2013 Share Posted 10 May, 2013 I own a bad ass belt sander, I also own a 2 large random orbital sanders . Hard work sanding but when finished looks quite nice. Not sure about the paint

Bugger going to all that effort to strip them down.
Smirking_Saint Posted 10 May, 2013 Share Posted 10 May, 2013 You can use chemical stripper, I used it on my knowel sp? (Banister) but it can sometimes stain so I had to go over it with a sander anyway. Sanding aswell is a pain in the ringpiece, Id only do it if I needed to (doors, alcatroves etc) but skirting boards ? Nah, if your redecorating just get the old ones of and buy some new ones, theres a big range these days, even the cheaper ones are decent but you get get some v nice ones from the more expensive establishments. Obviously you may need to re-plaster or patch up
