David Moyes and Saints

Apparently, David Moyes was interviewed for the Saints job around 2001, pre-Strachan, when he was at Preston. Lowe wanted him to join. Sticking point was that Moyes wanted to bring his back room staff with him and Lowe wanted to keep the existing coaching team. I would also guess that Moyes was smart enough to realise that working for Lowe would not be that great.

The last 10 years could have been a bit different. Apart from anything, we would have been spared a certain poster from bleating on about not getting Hoddle back in 2004,

One summer morning in 2001 we went on a day trip to France to stock up on the booze. On the drive down at some ungodly hour in the morning, I remember that 5 Live announced that Moyes was due that day to be announced as manager of Southampton. I returned from France surprised that he hadn't been appointed.

I think Lowe wnted to show the same loyalty to Gray as he had shown by not buggering off to Spurs with Hoddle and the rest of the backroom staff.

Trouble is we would be looking for a new manager now to defend our Champions League crown.

In hindsight I think we are better off, going through what we did, and come out the other side. We would still have plenty of debt and in the same lower reaches of the premier league. Of course we will never know what would have happened.

Moyes would have been gone by 2002!

Gray over Moyes.
