The9 Posted 10 May, 2013 Share Posted 10 May, 2013 Nobody wore replica shirts in those days, it seems that since supporters started wearing the teams shirts the yobbish behaviour started. I went to plenty of Saints matches at Fratton and never felt threatened including the 1984 FA Cup. Nowadays the pack mentality from some causes the problem. It is really only football that suffers from this low life behaviour. Other sports are much more grown up. Plenty of evidence above of trouble in the 1960s, and replica shirts weren't widely available until the late 70s. The cross-section of society attending the likes of rugby and cricket doesn't contain as many oiks, you know.
100% Saint Posted 10 May, 2013 Share Posted 10 May, 2013 Not so sure about that, I wouldn't dream of wearing any Saints colours to that town, I honestly do not believe that it would go uncontested and result in some sort of physical abuse. One of my relatives is a Pompey fan and unbelievably he went into Southampton with a Pompey shirt on and he asked directions and was refused because of his shirt and some verbal stick but that was the only real reaction he got. Saint137 Posted 10 May, 2013 Share Posted 10 May, 2013 My Dad used to go to Fratton regularly in the mid-60s before we were in the 1st Div, but mainly to see the big teams down there rather than Pompey. As he was away at sea he had loads of mates who supported various clubs and so would go along to Fratton to see them. Went in the docks after coming home from sea and started standing in the Docker's Choir and that was it. Bearing in mind he's now in his 70s and has most of his heart replaced with electronics and bits from pigs he was giving it larger than most of the Northam when we went to the Cup game and Rickie scored. chocco boxo Posted 10 May, 2013 Share Posted 10 May, 2013 I had to cancel a hotel booking today which should have cost me £156, the girl I spoke to asked for my postcode etc, when it came up Southampton she asked did I support Saints, on replying yes she said she was a Pompey girl! oh **** I thought no chance of cancelling it FOC. However she was really helpful and understanding, she contacted Hotel direct and no charge was made for me to cancel it. Surreal being so thankful to a Skate perhaps her Dad used to watch both teams back in the day.
