Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Apparently we're looking at this guy. He's Malaga's RB (yes, Quarter Finalists in the CL Malage). I would usually treat this with a pinch of salt, but it is from the Mirror and I presume Alan Nixon who has a good track record with us. Personally, I can't see we need another RB, unless as back up.
saints-cris Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 We do need one IMO. As good as Clyne is, were so much weaker when either he or Shaw gets injured.
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 To be fair if the report suggests we're looking at him then I wouldn't read too much into it. We're monitoring around 100 players and we'll sign around 4/5 players this summer (some not immediately for the first team) so I wouldn't conclude anything other than the quality of player we're looking at more than position etc.
stevegrant Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 There will be a big firesale at Malaga this summer as they have massive financial problems so I'd expect lots of clubs to be looking at their players - we certainly won't be the only ones.
Turkish Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 (edited) Not so Good at dealing with crosses I've heard. Edited 9 May, 2013 by Turkish
Turkish Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 I don't think it would be a miracle for him to join us.
Doctoroncall Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 I heard he's not fit enough to survive the physical nature of the PL, so will be dead before the season is out.
ben05 Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Is he better than Ostlund? "Jesus is our right back la la la la"
Hatch Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 He has gone stale at Malaga, looking to resurect his career elsewhere.
Pilchards Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 I think we already have a Jesus at the club so this would make it a 2nd, other than Oslund have we had any other religious names before?
buctootim Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Personally, I can't see we need another RB, unless as back up. Clyne might actually be better suited doing a Bale and moving up to midfield imo.

Wiggles31 Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Clyne might actually be better suited doing a Bale and moving up to midfield imo. Interesting point actually. If he tidied up his final third he could be an effective winger.
egg Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Clyne might actually be better suited doing a Bale and moving up to midfield imo. I'm inclined to agree. He's a very good fullback but I think would a very effective wide midfielder. Clyne would also be great LB cover for Shaw. Signing another good RB gives good options and cover.

Saint Garrett Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Interesting point actually. If he tidied up his final third he could be an effective winger. I don't think his final ball is very good, and think his tackling is pretty superb. Keep him at RB I reckon.
LatvianTolix Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 In addition to very good RB Gamez we need to sign sensational AM Isco, while he is still affordable to Saints. Otherwise Barca, Real or other big boys will get him
Saint Garrett Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Would love Isco, no chance though IMO. Absolutely incredible player.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 done deal............ http://www.mercato365.com/etranger/angleterre/southampton-une-offre-pour-gamez-1022261.shtml
Turkish Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 What would this mean for Clyne? We ain't going to pay £5m for a reserve full back.
Saint Garrett Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 What would this mean for Clyne? We ain't going to pay £5m for a reserve full back. Exactly my thought. Though Clyne and Shaw could do with some competition. It's a tough decision as beyond these 2, there is very little quality in our squad, but I can't really see us signing anyone thats that good if they know they're not going to play.
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 What would this mean for Clyne? We ain't going to pay £5m for a reserve full back. I reckon he could do a job at LB. Shaw probably shouldn't be playing everygame at his age, so having someone else that is adequate at FB (Fox just isn't) might be a good thing. Who knows, maybe Jesus can do a job at LB too if needed? I definitely feel a decent versatile FB should be a priority this summer.
Matthew Le God Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 (edited) What would this mean for Clyne? We ain't going to pay £5m for a reserve full back. It'll mean we have 3 Premier League quality fullbacks to rotate rather than 2 plus Fox/Richardson (who are Championship level). Clyne and Gamez can compete for right back and if Shaw for example was injured, Clyne could play left back and Gamez right back. That is better than having to use Fox. *awaits biting remark and Mr Men put down* Edited 9 May, 2013 by Matthew Le God

FloridaMarlin Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 "Jesus loves you." Not something you would want to hear in a Mexican prison.
mcjwills Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 What would this mean for Clyne? We ain't going to pay £5m for a reserve full back. Its a squad game now and as you progress further up the Premier League the expectations of players to play every game decreases, especially if you have a good squad. Even Rooney at Manure is on the bench on a regular basis, where as he would be a permanent fixture in a lower premier league side. If we are realistically wanting to challenge in a few years we are going to need to buy replacements for the 25 player squad that are as good if not better than the core of the current first team main players.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Even Rooney at Manure is on the bench on a regular basis, where as he would be a permanent fixture in a lower premier league side How's that working out for him?

Saint Charlie Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 (edited) Nixon saying we have spoken to Malaga and deal is close. Nixon: A big strong boy. Defender. Maybe u see a different formation or new way of playing Clyne. But this guy is deffo a live one. He also mentioned that perhaps we were looking at playing 3 CBs next season but it was only his opinion. Clyne and Shaw as wing backs would be immense and we have no wingers anyway so could suit... Also said he sees us spending a fair bit... Edited 9 May, 2013 by Saint Charlie
S-Clarke Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 He's a top, top player by the way. He's a Zabeleta style full back. I like Clyne and think he's been top notch, but we're clearly losing Richardson in the summer and we need proper competition back there. No harm in this what so ever. Squad depth is something which has been shown up this year, so if we're boosting the ranks at this level already, then that's a good sign.
Olallana Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 Good player, a bit odd for me that he is 28 and I thought we were preferring younger players to come in. But on the other hand, for me this would point to Cortese and MP wanting to move forward faster and because of that I think we might spend £40m in this summer....

He is an existing CL fullback so buy a few more players of that type of level and t can't hurt. Good to (potentially) see early business too.
ollysaints1 Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 If this means I can start signing "Jesus is our right-back" again, then I'm all for it.

The Kraken Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 FFS, why are the club prioritising a right back when we should be signing a CB??
Olallana Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 (edited) Need obligatory YouTube video. El Campeon... Edit: Sorry guys, didn´t watch it before posting. It´s just a compilation of still pictures... Edited 9 May, 2013 by Olallana
Olallana Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 For anyone interested, Malagas next game is home against Sevilla, sunday 8pm.
Forester Posted 9 May, 2013 Posted 9 May, 2013 I understand the sentiment here, but reality is that IF we are serious about pushing on to top half or better we need 2 Premier League quality options per position. And Richardson and Fox don't fit the bill. So I'd expect/hope for some signings this summer in positions where we don't have a crisis, but we absolutely need competition for places. And one of those is Lambert, an absolute legend, but not irreplaceable as he moves through his 30s.... FFS, why are the club prioritising a right back when we should be signing a CB??
